Still Alice is a movie about a linguistics professor and her family find their bonds tested when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Along the way, Alice struggles to not only to fight the inner decay, but to make the most of her remaining time to find the love and peace to make simply living worthwhile. I am going to analyze this movie by using archetypal approaches. The details are as follows:
Images
This movie starts with a family reunion for Alice’s birthday: children gave gifts to their mother, and joked for a while. Everything seemed so happy and so peaceful during that dinner. But with one flaw: her another daughter Lydia was missing here. Later we can catch many scenes of Alice talking to Lydia on the internet. Almost at the end of the movie, we can see the archetype of ice cream. it shows a image of some candies or ice cream(look like candies but actually is ice cream). Her husband ordered for himself and he said:” do you still want the old flavor?” I think the ice cream is an archetype to show that she has almost forgotten everything and even can’t remember what she herself loved to eat. This reflects how badly she is suffering from the disease. And then a building comes into our sight. Her husband asked her:”do you know what that building is?” Apparently she knew nothing about that building. Actually it is Columbia university where she used to work for so many years. All these are to show that her disease already goes into a very serious phase. Usually in movies, there are some images to show the seasons, and there is no exception in this movie. We see a year passes from spring to winter: first is beautiful pink cherry flower which blossom in Spring; and we see vibrant green leaves which symbols summer; then the autumn red maple leaves come and lastly we get a glimpse of the withered branches everywhere which is best represented for winter. So as you can see, this develops in a sequential order: spring, summer, autumn, winter. Even though in harsh winter, Alice is still running as we see a couple times of her running before. This shows that she is still trying hard to fight against the disease. What’s more, this movie ends with a story-telling: Lydia, her daughter was telling a story and asked her what it was about. Alice answered: “it’s about love.” So here is the end. In the end, we see Lydia is here by he side, accompanying her, even though at the beginning we always miss Lydia’s presence. This means she is a good daughter who is there when her family needs her.
Genre
As we know in the book, archetype is essentially and element of one’s literary experience. As for this movie, I think it is a romance. However, it’s not a romance only about love between lovers, but it contains many kinds of love: the love from children and love between Alice and her husband. So we can come into a conclusion that this movie’s genre is a broad romance.(I don’t know whether this is right for this is my own literary experience.)
Above all, Still Alice is such a great movie that it is no wonder it wins the Oscar Prize. But moreover, we learn the persisting spirit of Alice and a good heart. Last but not the least, we get a better understanding of archetypal approaches and how to use them to analyze a movie or a text.
Thank you for reading.
