A

    The story you are about to read is almost unbelievable, but it is true. It happened one winter's night in 1944, during World War II. Airplanes of the Royal Air Force, after dropping their bombs on Germany, were on their way home.

    In each plane, men looked anxiously over their guns into the darkness. This was the time when enemy fighter planes might attack. One of the air-gunners was Nick Alkemade. He was a gunner in the back of the plane and he sat in the rear-gun position, at the very tail of the plane. It was so small that before climbing in, Nick had taken off his parachute and left it in another part of the plane. He felt more comfortable without it. Soon, however, he began to feel very uncomfortable indeed. Suddenly there was a terrible explosion and the whole aircraft shook. The whole of the middle part of the plane burst into flames and Nick heard the captain shout, "We're on fire! Jump!"

    At first Nick could not get out of his seat. The tiny door was stuck. After struggling with all his strength for several moments, he forced it open. He looked for his parachute but it was already burning. He had to make a terrible decision: he could stay in the plane and be burnt to death or he could jump without a parachute and be smashed to death, after falling 6,000 metres. He jumped!

    The cold air hit him and he could not breathe. At this height the air is too thin to breathe properly. As Nick began to lose consciousness, he thought, "So this is what it's like to die." Then he remembered no more.

    When he woke up some time later, he could not believe that he was alive. Slowly he moved his arms, then his legs. They seemed all right. He was lying in a huge pile of snow. When he looked up, he saw a large fir tree. Its branches had broken his fall and the pile of snow had completed his soft landing.

    When he got to his feet, he found that his back and one leg hurt but he was able to walk. He made his way to a German farm, and soon he was a prisoner, in a hospital bed. At first the Germans did not believe his story. Later, however, they found the crashed plane and his partly-burnt parachute, with his name and number on it. This was the first time a man had jumped five and a half kilometres without a parachute and still lived!

More than four million people are bitten by dogs every year. Don’t be one of them.

Do keep the following in mind for the sake of your children’s as well as your own safety.

* Teach children not to put their faces close to animals—including their own pets.

* Don’t wrestle or play “tug of war” and other rough games with dogs. They can become over-excited and nip.

* Don’t try to pull a toy, a stick, or any other item from a dog’s mouth.

* Don’t approach a dog that is injured.

* Always approach a dog from the front or side, and never from behind, all the while speaking to it quietly. A surprised dog may bite.

* Never stick your hand into a dog’s crate, pen, or another enclosed space such as a car. This is the dog’s territory, and he may feel he has to bite to protect it.

* Never wade into a dog fight to separate the animals, even if one is your dog. Even professional dog trainers often are bitten in such situations.

* Teach children not to tease animals, nor to ride them, put clothes on them, or keep attempting to play with a tired pet. Children often provoke bites. (And this is another reason never to leave children, and especially babies and preschoolers’, alone with any dog.)

* Never turn your back on a strange dog, or on a dog moving toward you. 

* Pivot slowly if a dog tries to circle behind you, and move away.

* Don’t gesture, hand a dog’s owner a package, or even offer to shake hands if a dog is watching you intently. The dog can interpret these as threatening motions, and bite to protect his master or mistress. Stand still until the dog sniffs you, or moves away.

* Remember that any dog with a history of aggression is not an appropriate choice for families with children.

* Don’t base decisions about how to behave around dogs on their breed. Any kind of dog can bite.

* Never approach a dog when you don’t see the owner, especially if the dog is in a car, behind a fence, or on a chain.

* Never run to a dog you don’t know.

Teach children about dog safety and review the rules often.

And if you’re bitten, report the bite. If you are not sure whom to call in your community, call the police non-emergency lines and ask.

Did you ever wonder how a Mercedes Benz got its name? It is actually named after a man who is sometimes known as the father of the motorcar, a German called Karl Benz. However, it was first called Daimler Benz, the name Daimler being that of another German man — Gottleib Daimler.

It was Daimler who actually built the first successful petrol-driven internal combustion engine, but it would be Karl Benz who managed to use it to invent a practical automobile. When Daimler was working for Nikolaus Otto, a German designer of gas engines, he experimented with the idea of using petrol instead of gas to power the engines. In 1885, Daimler managed to fit his very first petrol engine to a large bicycle. This was to be the forerunner to the modern motorcycle. He went on to design a kind of car, which was in fact named Mercedes, after the daughter of his financial backer.  

Karl Benz, in the meantime, was trying desperately to design a practical motorcar. He faced many problems including serious financial difficulties. He even got into trouble with the local police as his engine tests were considered noisy and believed to frighten the horses. Not discouraged, he continued to pursue his dream and at last in 13, he was ready to sell his first four-wheeled motorcar. He began to have some success and soon other companies, like Renault and Lavassor were in competition with him.

About this time, an American called Ransom Eli Olds introduced the first factory-made car. A few years later, Henry Ford would make history with his mass produced Ford Model T, which would sell 15 million over the new twenty years. Karl Benz hated doing the same as he did not trust the use of machines. Another thing he didn’t like was producing faster cars for racing; something the other rival companies were doing. However, he eventually had to give in. He designed a racing monster called the Blitzen Benz, which again brought respect and admiration to the name Benz.

Daimler died in 1900. Twenty-six years later, the two companies Daimler and Benz combined into a successful company, which still exists today and manufactures the well-respected Mercedes Benz.

Three Umbrellas

Sally was a college student in London. She wanted to buy her mother a nice and useful birthday present, but not too expensive.

One day after a quick and simple lunch, she went shopping. Having looked for half an hour, she came across a shop selling umbrellas at a good price. So she decided to take one. 

She thought, “Mom can carry it when she is wearing clothes of any color.” Then she bought a lovely black umbrella and took it to school with her until her class finished. 

On her way home in the train that evening she felt hungry, so she went to the buffet car.  She left the black umbrella above her seat. But when she got back, she found it was gone!  

Sally burst into tears. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what was wrong.  When she explained the black umbrella she had bought for her mother had disappeared, and that she had to get off at the next station, the three other passengers asked her for her mother’s address so that they could send the umbrella to her in case someone returned it after Sally got off the train.
