Salvation of the heart

These days I read a novel named a tale of two cities, which shocked me deeply. And I not only learn about the culture but also about the human beings’ thought of forgiveness and option. 

The author of this novel is Charles Dickens and the whole book is about 439 pages which published by the Foreign Language Press in 2009.

The author is extremely great writer and he had published Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and so on. Among his works, I love a tale of two cities best. This novel was developed by the true history of France and English. The keep confliction and chaos made this novel colorful and  one climax following another. I was absorbed by it deeply. 

The background of this novel is in the Bastille and the main character, in my part, is Carton who seems to be a degenerate. However, he was smart and excepted a person who can understand him in the soul.  He was great enough to give up his life for the one, who he love.

The start of story was in the year of 1767s, the Dr.Manette was still young who was full of the sense of justice. One day, when he was taking a walk, a Marquis St. Evremonde forced him to visit a patient at home. In the marquis’ home, he witnessed a beautiful women going mad and a man dead in regret with the wounds covered his body. Dr.Manette couldn’t bear it. He refused the St. Evremonde’s bribe and accused them to the court. 

What he did not only caused nothing, but also sank himself into the dangerous. Dr.Manette was send into Bastille. His wife dead after two years and his little daughter was brought up by a kind-hearted servant girl Miss Pross. After 18 years, Dr.Manette was released with confusion of consciousness. He was took in Defarge, who was his servant once. Not far from this, his daughter was informed and took him back home. In the journey, they met a gentle man named Charles Darnay. This gentleman helped them a lot and very considerate. But the gentleman was St. Evremonde’s nephew. This gentleman hated his noble blood and gave up the right of inheritance. That is why this gentleman migrated to London and got the job to teach French. In the process of lived with Manettes, he fell in love with the daughter. 

However, in France, the St. Evremonde became more and more wildly against the law and killing as if the human life is not worth a straw. When he ran over and killed a kid, he leaded great anger in the public. He was killed by the kid’s father. However, his death did not cause too much focus. What the noble know nothing is a great campaign was brewing. The cub of  Defarges’ is a stronghold. the hostess wrote the noble’s sin on the scarf, longing for revenge.

In 17s, the French Revolution happened and the Paris public attacked and occupied the Bastille. Tens of thousands of noble were sent to guillotine. Charles Darnay came to French to save his servant Gabelle overlook danger. However, he was chained as soon as back to there. At that time,  Sydney Carton, who secretly love the doctor’s daughter, came back to the Pairs. For the deep love, he setted himself to death calmly instead of  Charles Darnay.

What moved me most was the words when Sydney Carton was on the guillotine. He said: “It is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” Maybe, in the public’s eyes, he was degenerate and aimless. But, in my eye, he is the one who knew the tendency of time, who knew how to love, who knew what is forgive. It seems he did not marry the one who he love, but he subdue a age for his love and forgive. 

As we can see, he was brave enough to give up his life and that is his gentle sincerely love. But, what shall I say about his forgiveness? 

On one hand, if Charles Darnay dead and the daughter may lost her husband. It maybe easier for Carton to get the girl’s heart. you know, he is so smart, no matter intelligence or looks. But, he did not stand aside, because he know that the girl’s love was in Darnay. So he decided to gave up his life. It means that he forgave the one who took his lover’s heart. 

On the other hand, in the execution ground, when he meet a noble girl who was too never-ous, he hanged her, touched her and kissed her to release her from stress. He is calm because of his forgiveness. He never complain about why the killers are so cruel or why the world is so chaotic. 

The degree to which Dickens has visualized both cities in his novel and set them back in time can be seen from the early topographical investigations of members of The Dickens Fellowship as recorded in its journal The Dickensian. Thus, in 1927, two articles appear, 'One City' by E Beresford Chancellor and 'The Other City, Paris' by H Pearl Adam. Both articles identify places in the novel with that indefatigable topographical enthusiasm which marked out the early Dickensians.

One of the most remarkable sufferers by the same axe--a woman-had asked at the foot of the same scaffold, not long before, to be allowed to write down the thoughts that were inspiring her. If he had given any utterance to his, and they were prophetic, they would have been these:

“I see Barsad, and Cly, Defarge, The Vengeance, the Juryman, the Judge, long ranks of the new oppressors who have risen on the destruction of the old, perishing by this retributive instrument, before it shall cease out of its present use. I see a beautiful city and a brilliant people rising from this abyss, and, in their struggles to be truly free, in their triumphs and defeats, through long years to come, I see the evil of this time and of the previous time of which this is the natural birth, gradually making expiation for itself and wearing out.”

All in all, as the sentence in the novel: “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”
