小王子chapter1-3

Chapter 1

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent (壮观的) picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval (原始的) forest.

It was a picture of a boa (巨蟒) constrictor in the act of swallowing (吞咽) an animal.

Here is a copy of the drawing.

In the book it said: “Boa (巨蟒) constrictors swallow (吞咽) their prey (猎物) whole, without chewing (咀嚼) it.

After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion (消化) .”

I pondered (思索) deeply, then, over the adventures (冒险) of the jungle (丛林) .

And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing.

My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

I showed my masterpiece (杰作) to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened (惊吓) them.

But they answered: “Frighten (惊吓) ? Why should anyone be frightened (惊吓) by a hat?”

My drawing was not a picture of a hat.

It was a picture of a boa (巨蟒) constrictor digesting (消化) an elephant.

But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,

I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa (巨蟒) constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly.

They always need to have things explained.

My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

The grown-ups’ response (反应) , this time, was to advise me to lay aside (在...旁边) my drawings of boa (巨蟒) constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside,

and devote (致力于) myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic (算术) and grammar.

That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent (伟大的) career as a painter.

I had been disheartened (沮丧的) by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two.

Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever (永远) explaining things to them.

So then I chose another profession (职业) , and learned to pilot airplanes (飞机) .

I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me.

At a glance (一瞥) I can distinguish (区分) China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.

In the course of this life I have had a great many encounters (邂逅) with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence (重要) .

I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have seen them intimately (熟悉地) , close at hand.

And that hasn’t much improved (提高) my opinion of them.

Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted,

I tried the experiment (试验) of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept.

I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding.

But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:

“That is a hat.”

Then I would never talk to that person about boa (巨蟒) constrictors, or primeval (原始的) forests, or stars.

I would bring myself down to his level.

I would talk to him about bridge, and golf (高尔夫球) , and politics, and neckties (领带) .

And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible (通晓事理的) man.

所以这句话只是把then提前了，大家不要句子顺序一变就不认识了哈，这样会很影响阅读的～

The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar.

而这一次，大人们的反应，是让我放下画蟒蛇的事，不管是画蟒蛇的外部图

应该把心思放在学习地理，历史，算数和语法。

lay aside : 把…放在一边，深刻含义就是，大人劝作者说，不管从里面还是外面看，都不要再画了。

吃一个栗子：The final exam is coming, she has to lay aside playing the piano and focus on studying.

have an encounter with 遇到

great deal 修饰的是 lived 的年数，所以是：我和成年人在一起生活了很多年。

matters of consequences 就是固定短语，指重要的事情

close at hand：近在咫尺

...and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.

through表示持续的状态，从头至尾，所以在这里就是睡了整整六个月    

I would bring myself down to his level

 bring down to his level自降格局  

 I have flown a little over all parts of the world .

 这里的 A little 指的是差不多，接近，意思就是，我差不多飞遍了世界各地

...and  it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explainingthings to them.

 to be doing表持续，意思是孩子们一直向大人解释东西，其实是很烦人的。

Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding.

 clear－sighted是视力好的意思，也可延伸为脑袋灵光

这一段中的两句话分别有一处语序调换。

第一句中，应该是who seemed clear-sighted to me at all，对我来说看上去聪明的人

第二句中，应该把so提到I would try to find out之前，表示，我把画给他看了以后，就知道他究竟聪不聪明（能否看懂我的画）

所以这整段话的意思是说：每当我遇到一个to me（对我来说）seemed（看上去）clear-sighted（聪明的人），我就会把画给他看。（为什么呢？因为我希望有人能看得懂我的画吖～）

这一段基本是今天问到最多的问题啦，不知道这样解释过后，大家都能理解了吗？

Chapter 2

So I lived my life alone, without anyone that I could really talk to, until I had an accident (事故) with my plane in the Desert (沙漠) of Sahara, six years ago.

Something was broken in my engine.

And as I had with me neither a mechanic (机修工) nor any passengers, I set myself to attempt the difficult repairs all alone.

It was a question of life or death for me: I had scarcely (几乎没有) enough drinking water to last a week.

The first night, then, I went to sleep on the sand, a thousand miles from any human habitation (居住地) .

I was more isolated (孤立的) than a shipwrecked (失事的) sailor (海员) on a raft (筏) in the middle of the ocean (海洋) .

Thus you can imagine my amazement (惊讶) , at sunrise (日出) , when I was awakened by an odd (奇怪的) little voice.

It said: “If you please—draw me a sheep!”

“What!”

“Draw me a sheep!”

I jumped to my feet, completely thunderstruck (惊愕的) .

I blinked (眨眼) my eyes hard. I looked carefully all around me.

And I saw a most extraordinary (非凡的) small person, who stood there examining me with great seriousness.

Here you may see the best portrait (肖像) that, later, I was able to make of him.

But my drawing is certainly very much less charming (迷人的) than its model.

That, however, is not my fault (错误) .

The grown-ups discouraged (使...失去勇气) me in my painter’s career when I was six years old,

and I never learned to draw anything, except boas from the outside and boas from the inside.

Now I stared (盯着) at this sudden apparition (幽灵) with my eyes fairly starting out of my head in astonishment (惊讶) .

Remember, I had crashed (坠落) in the desert (沙漠) a thousand miles from any inhabited (有人居住的) region.

And yet my little man seemed neither to be straying (迷路的) uncertainly among the sands, nor to be fainting (昏厥的) from fatigue (疲劳) , or hunger, or thirst, or fear.

Nothing about him gave any suggestion of a child lost in the middle of the desert (沙漠) , a thousand miles from any human habitation (居住地) .

When at last I was able to speak,

I said to him: “But—what are you doing here?”

And in answer he repeated, very slowly, as if he were speaking of a matter of great consequence (重要) :

“If you please—draw me a sheep...”

When a mystery is too overpowering (不可抗拒的) , one dare (胆敢) not disobey (不服从) .

Absurd (荒谬的) as it might seem to me, a thousand miles from any human habitation (居住地) and in danger of death,

I took out of my pocket a sheet (薄片) of paper and my fountain (这里指圆珠笔) -pen.

But then I remembered how my studies had been concentrated (集中精力) on geography, history, arithmetic (算术) , and grammar,

and I told the little chap (小家伙) (a little crossly, too) that I did not know how to draw.

He answered me:

“That doesn’t matter. Draw me a sheep...”

But I had never drawn a sheep.

So I drew for him one of the two pictures I had drawn so often.

It was that of the boa (巨蟒) constrictor from the outside.

And I was astounded (震惊的) to hear the little fellow greet (说话) it with,

“No, no, no! I do not want an elephant inside a boa (巨蟒) constrictor.

A boa (巨蟒) constrictor is a very dangerous creature (动物) , and an elephant is very cumbersome (笨重的) .

Where I live, everything is very small.

What I need is a sheep. Draw me a sheep.”

So then I made a drawing.

He looked at it carefully, then he said:

“No. This sheep is already very sickly. Make me another.”

So I made another drawing.

My friend smiled gently and indulgently (宽厚地) .

“You see yourself,” he said, “that this is not a sheep. This is a ram (公羊) . It has horns (犄角) .”

So then I did my drawing over once more.

But it was rejected (拒绝) too, just like the others.

“This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live a long time.”

By this time my patience was exhausted (耗尽) , because I was in a hurry to start taking my engine apart.

So I tossed (扔) off this drawing.

And I threw out an explanation with it.

“This is only his box. The sheep you asked for is inside.”

I was very surprised to see a light break over the face of my young judge (裁判员) :

“That is exactly the way I wanted it! Do you think that this sheep will have to have a great deal of grass?”

“Why?”

“Because where I live everything is very small...”

“There will surely be enough grass for him,” I said. “It is a very small sheep that I have given you.”

He bent (弯曲) his head over the drawing:

“Not so small that—Look! He has gone to sleep...”

And that is how I made the acquaintance (结识) of the little prince.

首先看「 neither...nor...」，这个词组表示“既没有...也没有…”，所以原文的意思就是，我身边既没有修理工，也没有其他乘客。

接下来看「 set oneself to attempt」这个词组，表示"某人开始尝试/着手于某事"，这里就是attempt the repairs，尝试自己修理飞机。

整句的意思就是，身边没有修理工，也没有其他乘客，所以作者要自己「all alone」尝试修理飞机。

I had scarcely enough drinking water to last a week.

「scarcely」 是一个否定词，类似还有barely/ little/ seldom等，虽然不带not，但是只要出现在句子里，就表示否定的意思哦。举个例子，She seldom showed her feelings.她很少表露情绪。

所以原文的意思就是，我没有足够度过一周日子的饮用水。

I jumped to my feet, completely thunderstruck.

「jump to my feet」 不是跳了起来（之前躺着，也没办法“躺着跳起来”），这是一个英语里的习惯搭配，指的就是 to stand up very quickly——非常快的站起来。

「thunderstruck」就是被雷劈了。这句话的完整意思就是，我吓得站了起来，就像被雷击中了似的。

「later」和我们昨天讲的“I pondered deeply, then , over the adventures of the jungle.”中插入的then一个道理啦，但略有不同的是，这次不要插到句首了，而把「later」放在「able to」后面，意为“下面这张，是此后我能「able to」为他画的所有肖像中，最好的一幅了”。作者为了表达对小王子的喜爱，还在后面加了一句，“注意哦，这画远没有「much less charming」小王子本人好看！”

「make of」 就是make a portrait of him＝make his portrait“给他画肖像”的变形， 「portrait」提前了，所以只剩下「make of」。

那么，小王子究竟有多charming呢？下面这就是帅气又萌的小王子了。

Now I stared at this sudden apparition with my eyes fairly starting out of my head in astonishment.

这句话原本的主干结构是I stare at sb.，看着某人，此处的「apparition」自然就是这个突然现形的小神童啦，而文中with后面的一串表示伴随状态。举个例子，He said it with his hands moving.他手舞足蹈地讲述。

而「starting out of my head」 是因为作者在荒无人烟的撒哈拉沙漠上，见到了我们的小王子，所以吓坏了「in astonishment」，把眼睛睁出了眼眶，这里就是夸张的手法，大家可以自行脑补一下。

Nothing about him gave any suggestion of a child lost in the middle of the desert, a thousand miles from any human habitation.

 这里如果出现理解问题，多半是因为大家把「suggestion」当成了“建议”，这虽然是「suggestion」最最最常见的解释，但放在这里明显是不对的。这里的「suggestion」更像是“表现”，a light trace of,所以这句话的意思其实是，他身上任何东西「nothing about him」都没有表现出他是一个迷路在荒凉沙漠，距离人群千万里以外的小孩。或者更简练的版本是，他一点都不像一个迷路在沙漠的孩子。

When a mystery is too overpowering , one dare not disobey.

结合前后文一起理解——前面说这个不知道哪里冒出来的小男孩一直让他画画，问他啥也不回答，只会说“If you please—draw me a sheep...”这里大家可以想象作者有多吓呆了，在沙漠连个鬼都没有的地方，出现一个小孩子嚷着要画羊。所以这里的「mystery」不是奇迹的意思，而是指小王子种种神秘的行为。

原句的意思是：当一个神秘的事物过于强大无法抵抗，我们只能服从。

…I told the little chap(a little crossly, too）

「chap」就是小家伙，「crossly」本来是生气的意思，此处更多表示的是伤心的意思，因为作者从小的绘画天赋没有得到大人的鼓励，今后都去学了语法、历史、地理那些，所以现在小王子让他画一只羊，他都不能画的很好。后面的「too」放在括号里，此处是对之前情绪的补充，表示也有一点伤心，所以整个括号里的内容就是为了表现作者的心情。

So I tossed off this drawing.

「toss off」 就是轻而易举的完成。一是因为作者急着去修机器，二是因为他灵机一动，想到了小时候the inside和the outside的梗，画了个盒子给他（没想到小王子看懂了）。

举个例子，He tossed off a letter to Jim.他随便给Jim写了封信。

I was very surprised to see a light break over the face of my young judge.

这里是形容小王子对这幅画很满意，「a light break」 终于眉头舒展喜笑颜开了。

「over the face」就是在他脸上的意思。

Not so  small  that ——

小王子看到作者画的盒子（以及里面的绵羊），开心坏了，低头看看那个箱子，说，也没有那么小啊…大家要想到，之前小王子强调过很多次，在他的星球上，任何东西都很小，所以，在作者看来很小的箱子，其实对于小王子来说，刚刚好。

Previous Story

在昨天的故事里，我的飞机出了故障，迫降到荒无人烟的撒哈拉沙漠。在那里，我和小王子相遇了。我为他画了一只不需要吃很多草的羊，也知道了他住在一个“不那么大”的地方。

Chapter 3

It took me a long time to learn where he came from.

The little prince, who asked me so many questions, never seemed to hear the ones I asked him.

It was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed (揭露) to me.

The first time he saw my airplane (飞机) , for instance (I shall not draw my airplane(飞机) ; that would be much too complicated (复杂的) for me),

he asked me: “What is that object?”

“That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane (飞机) . It is my airplane (飞机) .”

And I was proud to have him learn that I could fly.

He cried out, then: “What! You dropped down from the sky?”

“Yes,” I answered, modestly.

“Oh! That is funny!”

And the little prince broke into a lovely peal (轰然的声音) of laughter, which irritated (激怒) me very much.

I like my misfortunes (不幸) to be taken seriously.

Then he added: “So you, too, come from the sky! Which is your planet?”

At that moment I caught a gleam (闪光) of light in the impenetrable (费解的) mystery of his presence;

and I demanded, abruptly (突然地) : “Do you come from another planet?”

But he did not reply. He tossed (点头) his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane:

“It is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away...”

And he sank (陷入) into a reverie (幻想) , which lasted a long time.

Then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he buried (专心致志于) himself in the contemplation (沉思) of his treasure.

You can imagine how my curiosity (好奇心) was aroused (唤醒) by this half-confidence (信心) about the “other planets.”

I made a great effort, therefore, to find out more on this subject.

“My little man, where do you come from?

What is this ‘where I live,’ of which you speak?

Where do you want to take your sheep?”

After a reflective silence he answered:

“The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.”

“That is so. And if you are good I will give you a string (绳子) , too,

so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to.”

But the little prince seemed shocked (惊讶的) by this offer:

“Tie him! What a queer (奇怪的) idea!”

“But if you don’t tie him,” I said, “he will wander (离开) off somewhere, and get lost.”

My friend broke into another peal (轰然的声音) of laughter:

“But where do you think he would go?”

“Anywhere. Straight ahead of him.”

Then the little prince said, earnestly (诚挚地) :

“That doesn’t matter. Where I live, everything is so small!”

And, with perhaps a hint (少许) of sadness, he added:

“Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far…”

It was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed to me.

原句的意思是，我就只能从他不经意的言语中了解他的一切。

「 drop」：在此处可不是掉落，或者坠机的意思。这里drop就是speak，因为作者和小王子之间的对话是一点点进行的，所以大家可以联想一下drop的画面感——小王子东一句西一句的蹦出话来，是不是要比speak形象得多？

「 by chance」：原意是“意外地”，也是指小王子有意无意说出的话。这句话是引出接下来内容。他们一直在聊天，小王子问了许多问题，但对于我的问题却避而不答。

「 little by little」：一点一点地。

「 sth. be revealed to sb.」:reveal常用被动，表示“某事逐渐表露在某人面前”。 e.g.The secret was revealed to the president.总统知道了这个秘密。

The first time he saw my airplane, for instance (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me:  

 “What is that object?”

“That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane. It is my airplane.” 

这里可以看出来小王子根本就没见过飞机，所以才会说，“那是个什么玩意儿？” 在很多时候，这种说法是很不尊重别人的。作者是飞行员，飞机就是他的好伙伴（很多男生不是也把自己的车当成老婆？），所以当然不喜欢它被称作「 object」。

And the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter, which irritated me very much. I  like my misfortunes to be taken seriously . 

「 break into laughter」:“突然大笑出来”。这是一个很常见的搭配，还可以用tears代替laughter，表示大哭。  

「 irritate」：“激怒”，因为小王子先是把飞机说成“玩意儿”，后来作者还谦虚地承认自己坠机了，结果小王子哈哈哈哈笑个不停，这当然很让人不爽了。感觉像是“我都这么惨了，你还笑”。

「 misfortunes to be taken seriously」：意为，我希望自己遇到的不幸能够让小王子认真对待。和上一条tip同理，作者希望小王子不要以一串大笑声来回应自己的坠机事故（misfortunes）。

At that moment I caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence.

这里小王子得知我是从天上飞下来的，于是就问我来自哪颗星球。大家想一想，我们平时在和一个陌生人说话的时候，什么情况才会说：“你也是从那里来的吗？”当然是因为我们自己就是从那里来的。我们也不会问别人“你来自哪个星球？” 因为我们都是生活在同一个星球的人吖。

由此可见小王子的来历不简单。小王子不经意间说的话「words dropped by chance」让我觉得了解他神秘的来历有了一丝希望，一道曙光“「 caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence」。

「presence」：有“存在”的意思，但此处理解为“出现”更通顺合理。

“It is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away…”

两个「that」，第一个没有具体含义，第二个「that」指代作者坏掉的飞机，「on that」 就是“乘坐飞机”。因为飞机已经坏了，所以小王子就觉得，嗯，坐这么个坏掉的“玩意儿”，肯定飞不了多远。

Then， taking my sheep out of his pocket，he buried himself in the contemplation of his treasure.

他把小羊的画拿出来，陷入了深思，就是在深思「his treasure」，也就是小羊。

「buried oneself in」：bury这个词可以想象一下,原意是埋葬的意思, 这里用了一种非常生动的说法，表明“这个人正忙着做某件事”。栗子如下：He buries himself in lots of work.他忙着做自己的工作。

「the contemplation of sth.」：就是“深思某物”。

You can imagine how my curiosity was aroused by this half-confidence about the “other planets”. 

「half-confidence 」这里表示，“我对他关于’别的星球’的说法半信半疑”。

And if you are good I will give you a string,too…

这里的「good 」有同学以为是“好的”的意思，其实这里是一个常用的搭配“sth. be good with sb.”，“某人同意某事”,作者在这里省略了with。所以原文的意思是“你同意的话，我再给你一根绳子”。

The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.

这个句子问的人很多呢，大家不要方哦。我来拆给你们看：第一部分是——The thing is so good about the box(你给我的盒子),第二部分是——The thing is that he can use it as his house两个部分连起来就是：你给我的那个盒子好处就在于，小羊在晚上可以用它当房子。

“That doesn’t matter. Where I live, everything is so small!” And, with perhaps a hint of sadness, he added: 

“Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far...” 

这里结合上下文就比较好理解啦~~前文中，作者提议给小王子画根绳子，以免小羊跑了，小王子觉得这个建议不可思议，就说：Where I live, everything is so small!，“我住的地方很小”，Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far…，“走两步就到头了。”

至于这个「Straight ahead of him 」，这么说吧，大家给别人指路的时候会说：go straight along the street. 就是沿着这条街一直走，ahead 是“向前”的意思，所以「Straight ahead of him 」就是一直往前。
