During the past half century, the world’s population has been increasing at a fantastic speed, and we are now faced with the so-called problem of “population explosion”. With more and more people coming into this world, human beings are now in danger of food shortage because the land on which man can grow rice remains the same. If not controlled, the population of the world will amount to 7,000 million in 2000 as can be seen from the graph.

To solve the “population explosion” problem, or rather to save mankind, it is extremely necessary to practise birth control in some areas of the world.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic

Recently many cities are faced with the problem of heavy traffic. With the development of industry, this problem is becoming more and more serious.

In order to solve this problem, many solutions have been put forward. One suggestion is to lay down more roads. This suggestion has many advantages. For example, it can efficiently decrease the munber of buses and trucks in many main streets. Furthermore, it can also accelerate the flow of traffic. But it will take up much more land. Another suggestion is to open up more routes of buses. People who suggested this said that one cause of the heavy traffic is traffic accident. If more routes of buses had been opened up, the number of bicycles and cars in streets would have been coutrolled. Therefore, it is also good means of solving the problem of heavy traffic. But the disadvantage of this suggestion is that many people will feel not as convenient as they do before.

These two suggestions have advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, the right solution to the problem is the combination of the two, that is, to lay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus lines in downtown areas.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities

The population on earth is increasing rapidly, and with the development of modern industry, more and more people are flowing into cities. So the housing problem in big cities is becoming more and more serious.

There have been many suggested solutions to this problem. And I’m is favour of the idea of building satellite cities in the suburbs. The fresh air and beautiful sceneries will attract people to leave the overcrowded city. With many people leaving the city, more space will be available for those remaining. We can find a lot of successful examples in other countries which solve this “housing problem” by building satellite cities.

In the meantime, I don’t think developing to the underground will help solve the problem. I can hardly imagine that people will like to live under the ground, without the sky and the sun. It will make people feel totally uncomfortable.

The building of satellite cities is a good way to solve the housing problem. It not only relieves the burden on the big city, but also provide a much better environment for people to live in. Of course, there is no perfect way to solve the problem. The housing problem is very complicated, involving many other problems such as traffic. You cannot rely on one way to solve the problem completely.

Man Is to Survive

Man has lived in this world for thousands of years. They fight against noture from time to time and they survive. Today, they are facing many problems such as diseases, pollution and the rapidly increasing population. They also find that they are running short of energy because they have used it wastefully.

As we know, people can’t live without water, air and the sun. But now large amounts of water and air has been polluted, which brings about various problems troubling man’s life.

Some people consider that we can’t survive on earth. They think that if we don’t stop polluting our air and water, we can hardly live on.

Those people are too pessimistic. Human beings are wise enough to come up with effective solutions to these problems and to bring themselves out of the crisis. In the end they will be able to surviv.

Car Accidents Declining in Walton City

Last year, the number of car accidents was 39 in August. After August the rate was constantly declining, and reached trhe lowest 16by the end of the year. From June to August, the number rose from 26 to 39. The first two months of 1990 showed an increasing trend, and rose to 32in March, and then fell to 26 June.

The highest figure of 39 in August was due to weather factors. Humidity and high temperature make drivers impatient, which easily leads to car accidents. The highest figure in the first half of 1990 was also caused by weather conditions. In Walton City, the excessive rain comes in early spring. The rain makes the roads muddy, and often resulted in car accidents.

This year the pattern is expected to be altered. The City government has raised money to improve the road conditions. Two new roads were finished at the end of last year, and are expected to open to cars soon. New road regulations require that in summer all cars should be air-conditioned. With all these precautions, I’m confident the number of car accidents will be much lower this year.

Film Is Giving Way to TV

Film is giving way to TV. According to an investigation made on the number of film-goers and TV-watchers in a tenyear period(1975-1985), we can see that, at the end of 1985, the number of film-goers declined sharply to about 15 thousand which is only some 20 percent of that in 1975. This decline, no doubt, owes to the steadily increasing number of TV-watchers in the same decade.

This, I think, indicates the changing pace in our society. Nowadays, people prefer TV to film largely because they have less chance than their older generation to spend two or three hours in a cinema. They prefer a kind of entertainment which is freer, less time-consuming and thus more efficient. TV just meets their need. This is at least partly what attributes to the boom of TV in our generation.

Nevertheless, there are still a number of film-fans nowadays. They claim that as a classical art, film is far more enjoyable than TV. Some of them also want to recall the life of the “good past”. All in all, film is still a charming kind of art as it used to be.

Looking Forward to the Twenty-First Century

Since World War II, science and technology have developed a great deal. In the next century, this trend will undoubtedly continue. All kinds of technology will develop at a higher speed than ever. This development will bring great benefits both to our everyday life and to our work. At the same time, it will also improve industrial and agricultural production.

On the other hand, this development is sure to bring about some new problems we have never met before or, at least, to make some present problems even worse. If some new species of animals were really turned out by the gene engineering one day, what would our world be like then? And ance the artificial-intelligent robots were put into use, what would these clever “people” do to their producers?

In spite of all these problems we will not go back to lead the life our forefathers led. The only way is to improve science and technology and to find out all keys to those problems. That is difficult, but we, the college students of the 1990’s, will surely turn it into reality.

Motorcycles And City Traffic

Nowadays, more and more motorcycles have appered on the streets and roads of Chinese cities. Most of them are domestic products, but quite a few are importes from abroad, especially from Japan.

Motorcycles are much cheaper and consume much less oil than cars. But they can run at the same speed as cars. Furthermore, they can go into the narrow streets where cars can’t go and they can be parked easily. But motorcycles have shortcomings too. They are more likely to cause accidents and are therefore more dangerous than cars. There is also the problem of pollution. When a motorcycle is started, it gives away a lot of smoke which contains poisonous chemical substances harmful to our health. And very often the noise it produces is unbearable.

In my opinion, motorcycles have a great future in the cities of China. Because cities in China have a big population, the traffic is always crowded. To solve this problem, using the motorcycle is a perfect solution. It is fast so that you can speed your trip. It is small so that you can use it conveniently and avoid traffic jams. I believe one day motorcycles will become the most widely used traffic vehicles in China.

My View on Opportunity

There is no consensus of opinion among people as to the views on opportunity. Some people suggest that opportunities are rare, and only the luckiest persons can obtain them, while some other people argue that in a sense everyone has opportunity from time to time.

As for as I am concerned, I agree with the latter opinion to some extent. I think that various kinds of opportunities are around us all the time. However, the opportunity will not run into you voluntarily. You must try your best to find them and make full use of them.

For example, when I was studying in high school there was a national chemistry competition. Most of my classmates thought that we had virtually no chance of winning the competition since we were studying in a rural high school. But I felt that it was a good chance and I must grasp it. So I prepared for it thoroughly and finally I won the first prize.

In conclusion, I believe that the opportunities are abundant in our society and everyone is equal for them. We can acquire them only if we are prepared and qualified, just as a proverb says, “Opportunities are only for the prepared minds.”

We Need to Broaden Our Knowledge

Our civilization is mainly attributed to the fruits of science and technology. In history, every scientific and technological revolution led to an immense surge in society, pumping the productive force to a higher level. At present we are living in the information age, which is known as “the Fourth Wave”. The development of our society is much more dependent on new science and technology than ever before, and it is hard to imagine what our way of life would be like without them.

Social science, on the other hand, constructs the spiritual buildings of human beings. It makes our life more diverse and meaningful. Natural science, no matter how advanced, cannot develop further without the direction of philosophy and social science. In modern socity, the relationship between natural science and social science has become more and more close. A great deal of new subjects, which are actually derived from both natural and social science, has come into existence and enrich the sea of human knowledge greatly.

Therefore, as college students, we should learn any kind of knowledge as much as possible, not only in order to widen our horizon but to meet the requirements of modern society. We should make every effort to become versatile students, so that we can achieve our goals fully and make as many contributions to our developing country and the progress of the civilization of human beings.

The Career I Pursue

Many a time in my life I’ve been thinking about my future: what career shall I take and what can I do to prepare myself for it. My idea changted from time to time, but now, I’ve made up my mind that I’ll be a college teacher.

As a teacher, you are your own boss. You are not to be supervised every hour by your employers. And you are not frequently told what to do or how to do. The content of your lessons and the way you give your lessons are largely determined by yourself, which leaves you more freedom and makes more room for your imagination and creativity. I love the idea of being my own boss. Besides, the college is a place where you can enrich your knowledge and improve yourself. You can learn much from your colleagues. And also you can enjoy yourself by watching the development of your students, which gives you a sense of achievement.

But teaching is a demanding career. I must read as widely as I can to acquire the knowledge needed for teaching. In this way I will be able to teach convincingly and vividly. Theaching is partly talking to our students. From now on, I’ll practise more in speech and develop a sense of humor.

I love to be a teacher. I might not be a good teadcher, but I will be a devoted teacher

My View on the Negative Effects of Some Advertisements

Nowadays, advertisements are very common in our everyday life. Advertising is really an effective method for manufacturers to make their products known to the public. However, there are some business advertisements which bring harmful effects.

In order to make more profit, some manufacturers exaggerate their products’ functions in the advertisements. That is, the product does not live up to the standard advertised and the consumers will find themselves fooled. In some cases, it may lead to more serious consequences. For instance, and exaggerated or even non-existent function of a medicine wil perhaps endanger the patient’s life.

In my opinion, advertisements on the whole are good. But we should not neglect the negative effects of those bad advertisements. The government should firmly ban the advertisements with negative effects before they are released.

Should Firecrackers Be Banned?

People’s opinions about whether firecrackers should be banned vary from person to person. Some people say that it is a good thing to set off firecrackers. To them, setting off firecrackers is a traditional means to celebrate our special days, particularly the Spring Festival. If firecrackers were banned, our festivals would become too quiet to enjoy.

Others think firecrackers should be banned. In support of their argument, they list many facts to show that fires are caused by firecrackers, which bring so much damage to people. At the same time, they say, firecrackers make noise and cause air pollution.

Personally, I am on the side of the latter argument. It is true that firecrackers make our festivals more enjoyable, but, I think, we can think out other entertainments. And also, we can appreciate the sound of firecrackers by listening to a tape recorder instead of setting them off. In a word, firecrackers should be banned for the benefit of all people!

Why I Take the College Engligh Test Band 6

Although nowadays more and more students take the College English Test Band 6, still there are people who think it is unnecessary to take it. They think it is enough only to take the Band 4 test.

I have my own opinion. I think it necessary to take CET-6. The reasons are as follows. First, passing CET-4 only means that you have the ability to read, write, speak and listen to simple English, you are far from good at English. Second, with the development of market economy, more the more foreigners are coming to China. Since many people in the world speak English, you can communicate with them freely if you have a good command of the language. Last but not the least, if you plan to take CET-6, you will continue your English study instead of stopping it after passing CET-4, which will bring your English to a higher level. Higher English level will help you to find a satisfactory job in the future.

I take CET-6 not only for passing the test, but for improving my English. So even after I pass it, I will continue my English study.

Health Gains in Developing Countries

In the last 30 years, the life expectancy has risen while the infant mortality has declined in developing countries. In 1960, the life expectancy was about 40 years old. And in 1990, it reached almost 60. On the other hand, the infant mortality was about 200 deaths per 1000 births in 1960 and the figure arrived at 100 in 1990.

There are three major reasons for the change. One is that the economy has developed quickly during the past years. This allowed the government to put more money in the health care program, which plays an important role in changing people’s health condition. And wide spread of education is also a good reason. People today are more careful about their health. Also we can’t ignore the help from the developed countries.

If all this continues, the conditions will get better.

Haste Makes Waste

There is an old saying, “Haste makes waste.” It’s the experience of our forefathers, however, it is correct in many cases even today.

Usually, if you act faster, you can reach your goals earlier. But it isn’t always the case. If you emphasize only on speed but ignore the quality of your work, you will get the opposite effect. The more hasty you are, the slower. You’ll achieve success. In short, haste makes waste.

Assume that you are preparing for your final examination. There are a lot of exercises to do and many notes to rememeber. The face that you don’t have enough time makes you very worried. So you read and write continuously, without rest, without sleep, without relaxation. The result is that your brain is less and less efficient, your process is slower and slower. The situation goes from bad to worse. All your efforts lead to nothing.

On the contrary, if you make your preparations with a calculated plan and carry out the plan step by step, your work will be effective. Consequently, you will take part in the exams with greater confidence.

Whatever you do, please remember the saying – haste makes waste. If you understand it and apply it to your study or work, you’ll certainly benefit a lot from it.

My View on Job-Hopping

“You resigned again?! What’s your new job?” Job-hopping has become a hot topic among people, especially the young, and heated debates focus on it, as a result.

Many people are inclined to do one job in their lives. In their opinion, people who change their job frequently are superficial and tactless. They believe that the only way to success is to stick to one job, for constant proctice in a professional field helps make an expert.

But there are still many people who won’t agree. They argue that change means progress. If you’re not satisfied with your present job, of course you have the right to replace it with a more challenging and better paid one. Every change is a step to further success. This ider may be the reason why they chang their jobs so often.

For my part, I think it reasonable to chantge your job if you have a better opportunity. But once you have found a position where you can fully display your ability, you’d better settle down and put your whole heart into it. Only in this way, you can get the true joy of achieving your goals.

My View on Fake Commodities

Nowadays, more and more fake commodities appear in the market, which has aroused close social attention.

Fake commodities are very harmful to consumers. They range from foods, clothes to radios, TV sets, and even some medicine is fake, which has brought a lot of troubles in our daily life. In addition, fake commodities have affected the manufacturers, too. Those who have fallen victims of fake commodities will never buy them again, even the commodities are good next time.

There are may ways to get rid of fake commodities. First, laws should be passed to punish those who produce fake commodities. Second, people should be educated to tell the good commodities from the fake ones.

They shouldn’t buy something just because the advertisements tell them to do so. In a word, the whole society should pay close attention to the problem of fake commodities and fight a battle against them. Only in this way can fake commodities be driven out of your daily life completely in the future.

Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?

My friend Mary was born on June 13, 1997. She is always dissatisfied with her birthday because 13 is an “evil” number. There are a lot of people who are convinced that good numbers bring good luck and bad numbers bring disasters. Hence, 13, 4 and other socalled “evil” numbers are wiped off from cards, lists, menus, etc. Even in some cities, there is no bus No. 13 or No. 13 Street.

I don’t think numbers have anything to do with luck. Numbers were created for counting. There is no relationship between a certain number and one’s fate. There are many people who succeed in spite of “close relationship” to bad numbers. There are also, a lot of people, who should have been blessed by “lucky” numbers, involved in accidents. Take my friend Mary for example. She achieved a good study at the naion’s most prestigious university and later gained good reputation in her career. Her luck is not a bit damaged by her “bad” birthday.

In a word, numbers are numbers. They stand for nothingt but quanitiy. Numbers have nothing to do with luck.
