Many studies have been done recently regarding the importance of art in the development of children. Having worked with youth over the past eight years in a gallery, I have come to realize that visual art activities can help improve several important skills in a child’s development.

     Encouraging creativity. When creating an artistic work, a child is learning to communicate visually, no matter whether it is a crayon (粉笔) drawing on a wall or a developed self-portrait. Maybe they are only drawing what happened that day (like Mommy and Meat the Zoo). Many times, young children are only learning to experience things (like "Red paint and blue paint mixed together make a new color.") or learning how to properly use an art tool. Creativity is an important skill that is invaluable at school, in the workplace, and in everyday life. 

     Developing problem-solving skills. When a child wants to recreate a happy memory visually, he or she has to consider many things. These thoughts may run through the child’s head, "Should I use crayons, pencils, or magazine cut-outs? What kind of paper should I use? Since the glue (胶水) is not working perfectly, what will work better?" Art encourages basic and advanced problem-solving skills.

     Encouraging self-expression. A child expresses his or her happiness through a cheerful painting of flowers and sunshine, ___________ his or her sadness through a series of blue drawings. Each example shows that a child learns to portray visually what cannot be said through words or actions. Self-expression plays an important part in the visual arts.
