A Beautiful Mind

   A Beautiful Mind is an excellent film shoot by Ron Howard. The movie was awarded the most of the highest prize in 2002, which again emphasized its great performance. Based on a true story, the film was adapted from a biography on a talented mathematician.

   The main character in the film is John Nash who is absorbed in his mathematics researching when he is a student in Princeton. He is very eccentric and he cannot get along freely with others. The only thing that he cares much is the entrance to MIT. As a result, he tries his best to make himself stand out. However, the bridge to success is not so smooth. He often gets stuck by his work. Fortunately, his roommate Charles is a very nice guy. Whenever Nash encounters something troublesome, he can always accompany with him, helping him through those difficulties.

   Success never ignores those who have devoted a lot. Nash succeeds in entering the MIT and teaching there. He is quite prosperous now. Everything seems to so natural. One day, Nash is chosen by Parcher to work for the government because of his high intelligence as well as his eccentric characteristics. As a spy of the government, everything about his job must be kept secret. The officers in the Pentagon plant a chip under his skin which will enable him to receive the information from the government. Nash is quite willing to apply his knowledge to things worthwhile.

   But love blooms just like the spring followed winter. A beautiful girl Alicia, one of Nash’s students, goes into his life. As time goes on, the more they contact with each other, the deeper their relationship becomes. When love comes, no one can resist it－they get married. It seems certain that they will live happily forever.

   But things just turned out the other way. Nash is doing his work as usual on a dark night when something extraordinary happens. He and the Big Brother Parcher are attacked by their enemies from Soviet Union. Though they survive at last, Nash becomes a little abnormal. He is very sensitive to strangers for fearing that they may be the men who want to kill him. When he is giving a lecture, he flees for seeing some guys run towards him. At last, Nash is captured by them, but the fact is that they are doctors.

   Nash is diagnosed with schizophrenia! All the things including his roommate Charles, the general Parcher, his classified work are not true but his illusion! Nash can’t accept this until the blood that he find no chip under his skin.

   After a series of painful treatments, Nash is allowed to go and take medicines at home. The life to his wife Alicia now is a great burden, for everything is on her shoulder: taking care of their child and Nash, working to make a living and so on. Sometimes she is even driven crazy by the difficulties. Life to her is not easy. For Nash’s part, he seems to get better. Much as he is bothering by his illness, he doesn’t give up his research. However, the medicines he took prevent him from thinking that he can’t make great progress as he used to. Nash stopped taking medicines for working better. But Parcher appears again at this time. He forces Nash into a little room where several men are working busily behind their house. Nash cannot resist it and becomes one of them again.

   On a heavily-raining day, Alicia happens to be walking into the secret house, the moment she catches it she gets petrified. The room is empty except magazines, newspapers full of the wall: Nash goes back into his illness again! But this time, Alicia doesn’t ask the doctor to take him away. With everyone’s love and care, Nash overcomes his difficulties. In 1994, he wins the Nobel Prize for his great achievement to the world’s economy.      

   That’s all about the film. You may criticize for my too many words, but I don’t want to lose many details for I really appreciate this great film I ever saw. When I first knew it, A Beautiful Mind, I was a little puzzled: why it is translated into “MeiLiXinLing”? , it gave me the feeling that the film will surely focus on the traditional story that an ugly girl has a beautiful heart and she is recognized as a beautiful girl after her death for saving someone. But the moment the film began, I knew I was wrong. The color of the film is a little dim mainly black and white. Besides, there is a concrete time under the scene. I began to wonder the story of the film is true or not. In fact, it was surfing the Internet that I got to be sure that what is told in the film is based on a true story.

   The film explains us something quite useful. First Nash’s theory makes us attach importance to the teamwork. In our daily life, we need have a thinking pattern that sometimes we need to give up what we truly love for reaching the ultimate goal in the group. In the society, we are no longer individuals but a presentation of all. What we do or say can directly reflect our team, organization or even our country’s condition or attitude. So we need to think more for all and less for ourselves.

   Second, the key word of the film is love. Love between friends, lovers. Though Charles is just a delusion of Nash’s mind, I’m certain that there is truly a friend like him in Nash’s life, helping him, supporting him and loving for him. Besides, when Nash decides to go back to his research in school, he even doubts his own illness. But his friends just adopt him and help him with heart. It all leads the success of Nash. Alicia, a considerable woman, contributes all her youth to such an abnormal genius. Difficult as the life is, she still holds on. Maybe you think it’s unrealistic, the answer I can tell is love. Because of love, she has the courage to ask him to dinner; because of love, she can stay with him at the time of being needed; because of love, she doesn’t deserts him when she is at the edge of falling. She sticks with Nash through everything, even how difficult, she will stick with him.

   Then it is about the society. The world nowadays is filled with various pressure or troubles that may drive us to go extremes. Nash’s illness may be only an example of such things. So faced with people who are mentally ill, we needn’t down look them or feel sorry for them. They are just going into a world that other people do not understand. Try to help them with our true love instead of teasing or neglecting them. Build a warm and comfortable world for them. We have the responsibility to do this. Like Nash, if he is looked down upon by all the other people, abandoned by his wife, then a genius will surely disappear with his theory that has influenced the society greatly.

   Finally it’s about our human beings. Nash is lonely at Princeton, he packs himself in a world that without others. He lacks the ability to love somebody and be loved by somebody. In his world, he only cares about that mathematics. Though he makes great achievements, is he really happy? What dose he get through his lifework except the theory? Nothing! I have to admit that Nash is lucky, for he meets a tolerable girl. But what if she isn’t such that? So what I want to say is that keeping an open heart to people, we need to have at least one friend to share with our happiness and sorrow. 

   Though I am still confused with the film’s name A Beautiful Mind, maybe what the editor wants to tell us that Nash is insane because of his absorbing into the mathematics world, he is pure in making great progress to the global.

   In a word, the film will never disappoint you!

Do We Need Nuclear Energy?

   The course is a debate on the necessary of nuclear energy. As we all know, as the development of our society, fuels like coals and gas have been largely wasted by our human beings. Besides, the energy existed now cannot really meet our high demands. What’s more, burning coals can produce large amounts of carbon dioxide which leads to the increasing of our global temperature. It is urgent to develop new energies instead of those traditional resources.

   At the beginning of the debate, there are about three quarters of the audiences support the nuclear energy. They hold the view that with the increasing movement into the urban area, more energy especially electricity are badly in need. To solve the shortage of electricity, we need a clean and sustainable energy to support. You may think of solar and wind energy, but the problem is that they cannot provide electricity lastingly. Besides, they will cover a large square of earth to build them and the usage is often low. Nuclear energy, however, is easy to be used and will produce much less carbon dioxide than coal, which is the most important reason why we need to choose it. However, the opposite side put forward a different opinion that nuclear energy can produce more carbon dioxide and more air pollution and higher death rate than wind based on some digitals. Besides, a nuclear plant will take a long time to build from planning to completing. But the wind will not be the problem and it doesn’t take up to many places. What’s more, the leaking of nuclear energy will certainly be a threatening to the world.

   In the debate, I am against the nuclear energy. The first reason is that it needs a large amount of uranium mining to provide for the material of the nuclear plant. In finding these, we need to cost a lot in labor resources as well as natural resources. Second, the popularity of nuclear energy will lead to the wildly appearance of nuclear weapon which will surely arouse the threatening of terrorists. As a result, the control of nuclear will be impossible. What’s more, the evidences have proved that the wind and solar energy can fulfill our needs. In the long term, wind and solar can produce less danger to the world.

   Instead of using nuclear energy with a heart dangled, how about concentrating on researching to improve the use of solar and wind?
