HONG KONG ---In China, the smart-phone(智能手机)battle used to be Samsung VS Apple. But not any more, Xiaomi (小米)，a Chinese company, took the first position in China’s competitive market over the summer. With people in China expected to buy 500 million smart-phones in 2015 — more than three times as many as will be sold in the United States, Xiaomi is likely to remain its place as one of the most powerful phone makers in the world’s most important market.

Founded in 2010, Xiaomi was late to the game. But a clever social media strategy (策略）and a business plan helped Xiaomi support from young Chinese.

Why Xiaomi gained such great success? The reason partially lies in its fans，participation (参与）.Han Yu, a 24-year-old studying for his master’s degree, is one of its fans. He helps Xiaomi test its user interface (用户界面）by looking for bugs and offering suggestions. Much of his personal life was stored in Xiaomi. He said he was honored when his suggestion to create a private photo folder was taken on phones by Xiaomi.

“I really enjoy the sense of participation," Mr. Han said.

In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Mcister was very ill. He had been attacked by a sick dog that had rabies, a very dangerous disease. His doctor tried to help him, but there was no cure for rabies at that time. The doctor told Joseph’s parents that perhaps there was one man who could save Joseph’s life. His name was Louis Pasteur.

When Pasteur was young, he was especially interested in medicine, so he spent many hours every day with the chemist (药剂师）who lived in his small town. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and helped those people who came to him each day. Pasteur decided that one day he would help people, too.

As a school boy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school, and college, Pasteur worked the same way. In fact, he was not a slow learner, but a very intelligent young man. He became a college professor and scientist, and he continued to work very carefully.
