Some people have the feeling that nothing can be done about their poor reading ability. They feel hopeless about it. Can you learn to read better, or must you agree that nothing can be done about it?
To be sure, people are different. You cannot expect to do everything as well as certain other people do. If all the students in a class tried out for basketball, some would be very good players; others would be very poor; and many would be in between. But even the very poor players can become much better players if they are guided in the right way, and with plenty of practice. It is the same with reading. Some seem to enjoy reading and to read well without any special help. Others find reading a slow and tiring job. In between, there are all degrees of reading ability.
Many experiments have shown that every poor reader can improve his reading ability. In these experiments, the poor readers were given tests of reading ability. After some of the causes of their poor reading were discovered, they were given special instruction and practice in reading. After a few months, another test of the same kind was given. In nearly all cases, these people had raised their reading scores.
. With the example of basketball players, the author shows ________
A. why certain people are poor readers
B. that there are differences in people’s abilities
C. why some people are good basketball players
D. that good basketball players can be good readers
65. To improve their reading ability, people should ________
A. work long and hard.

A. good readers seem to enjoy reading
B. almost all poor readers can make progress
C. causes of poor reading are difficult to find out
D. tests help people improve their reading ability.

The Sir Lankan coastline is filled with fishermen who use the sea as their main source of living. Their daily catch would define the life of their own and their families. But it only took a few hours to remove their life-long habitat right in front of their eyes.
Some fishermen had set sail on Christmas night. A very few were lucky enough to return the next morning. But none found any of what they left behind the other night. They were made to lose their families by the very waters that they used to love the most.
The few who made it through the day have been wondering about the meaning of their lives. They had used the sea for decades, but the sea used them for a single day. Is it justice(公平)? Or killing? What would become of them? For whom would they go fishing again? As they struggle with their conflicting feelings, they also come to remind themselves of their struggle for survival.
Where are they now? They didn’t leave the beach, or the sea. They will be back because the sea is their home and the only means of living, so they will continue in their fight for destiny(命运).
But will it be the same? Sadly not. Even though they force themselves to forgive, they can’t forget. They will never be able to get through the idea of a friend turning against them. That fear would always run deep in their hearts. As the fishermen get ready to take on their duties once again, each would take with them a frightful story that reminds them of the day of betrayal(背叛), the day that rewrote their lives.

Fast Food
Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers.
There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. You just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in no time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third, the environment of fast restaurants is both clean and comfortable. Fourth, it has excellent service, and the quality of food is guaranteed. However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory; it is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value.
Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. It’s good for people, especially children, to eat fast food as little as possible.

M: Hello, Carol. What seems to be the trouble?
W: So kind of you to come to see me. I don’t know what’s wrong. Three days ago, while planting roses in the garden,it rained and I got completely wet,and I’ve had a cough since that night. Now I ache all over.
M: Well, let me take a look at you. Are you still coughing very much?
W: Yes, and my stomach has been upset. In addition,I always feel sick.
M: Hmmm. You’re running a high fever, I’m afraid.
W: Oh, no wonder I’ve got a hot face.
M: Well, Carol, I think you’ve got the flu. These days there has been a lot of flu going around. I want you to stay in bed for at least two days, drink plenty of water, and take the medicine three times a day. I’ll look in on you tomorrow morning.
W: Very good. Thank you so much.

How does television affect our lives? It can be helpful to those who carefully choose the programs that they watch and harmful to those who watch it too much.
In China, many people worry that children and young people are watching too much television. A survey of 300 youngsters in Shanghai last year showed that, on average, they spent half of their free time, that is two and a half hours watching television. And two-thirds of an hour reading stories. Another survey of school-age children in Wuhan found that half of them said they read very little.
During the Barcelona Olympic Games, tens of millions of Chinese viewers stayed up late to watch the opening ceremonies and other programs. And television is quickly taking the place of printed material as the major source of news for most Chinese. A recent survey in Beijing found that 63% of those surveyed got their news from television through CCTV and TV stations.
