In choosing to continue their education in a foreign country away from their family, the students will often encounter hardships that sometimes seem greater than the rewards they expect to receive at the conclusion of their education abroad.
For a start, the students and their families must often spend large amounts of money paying for the cost of their education and living abroad. They must then become accustomed to living alone and caring for themselves without the support of their families. In addition, the students will find it difficult to master a foreign language and become familiar with the country’s customs, so it is obvious that the foreign students’ life is not always an easy one.
However, in the long term, the students will often discover that the benefits of self-dependence and the mastery of a foreign language often outweigh the initial hardships experienced in their foreign studies. These benefits often take the form of a well-paid and satisfying job. These are the major rewards most of the students studying abroad expect.
In recent years, many young people decide to further their study abroad. What are the benefits and drawbacks of studying abroad?
近几年来,许多年轻人打算去外国继续深造。请谈谈出国留学的利与弊。
Over the last several years, along with the rapid development of economy, more and more parents have been sending their children to study abroad. Up to now, this rush is still on and even gets more widespread. Recently’ this phenomenon has been brought to public attention with people standing on both sides.
Proponents argue that overseas study has so many advantages. First of all, it can broaden one’s vision. One gets a chance to experience a totally different culture. This knowledge of high technology and social customs acquired in the western countries helps one to become more open-minded. Secondly, studying abroad is a good way for one to cultivate independence. One has to learn how to take care of and protect oneself, and how to get on well with people from different cultural backgrounds. Thirdly, one can attain a good command of a foreign language. So when one finishes his/her study abroad, one will have more choices for his/her future career. All the above merits are conducive to one’s self-betterment and self-realization.
However, there is a good side and a bad side to everything. Further study abroad is no exception. Critics argue that there are many good reasons against it. For one thing, living far away from home, one will suffer from loneliness and homesickness. Overseas students often feel disoriented and depressed for lack of adequate knowledge and understanding of the local customs and lifestyle. Some of them may even fail to adjust themselves to the life overseas till the end of their study. For another, many students do not want to return to their native country after graduation because most of them want to seek a more comfortable life and a brighter future overseas. This may result in a serious brain-drain and our country will inevitably incur a huge loss of talents.
All the opinions above make sense, and consequently it is hard to come to an absolute conclusion. In my opinion, whether studying abroad is good or not should be left to an individual’s judgment. It is advisable that all relevant factors should be taken into account before making up one’s mind. (354 words)

Study Overseas
With the improving living standard and China more open to the world, more and more young people choose to pursue their higher education in English-speaking countries such as America, Britain or Australia. Frankly speaking, studying overseas had both advantages and disadvantages.
The main benefit of studying abroad is academic one. Obviously in western colleges and universities, the laboratories are more sophisticated, and book resources more up-to-date. More importantly, they have first-rate professors who are aware of all the latest developments in their respective fields. Hence the standard of teaching is much higher.
Besides academic benefits, there are other advantages. For example, exposure to foreign culture and contact with students from different countries and different backgrounds will broaden their mind and make them more tolerant. Living alone in the foreign land will also offer greater opportunity to develop their independence, their personality and many other interpersonal skills.
Despite these obvious advantages, we should not overlook negative effects. one problem is the difficulty they have adjusting to a new culture. They may experience loneliness and homesickness, an experience so overwhelming that many could not endure it. Another is financial problem. It is not easy for ordinary students to cover high college cost. Many overseas students end up dropping out and working full time.
While overseas study has its drawbacks, the advantages are obvious. Provided that it is financially feasible, an overseas education may do a person more than harm
