Introducation

Brief introduction to classical Chinese philosophy of Confucianism, Daoism, Moism and Legalism.:Confucianism had been regarded as an ethic-political system in ancient China.For more than two thousand years it has moulded and shaped the civilization of China.Daoism has exerted great influence on the thinking of the Chinese people,as well as on the political,economic and cultural life of the country.Daoism Moism had an important place in the history of Chinese culture.Although Moism was first known as the Five Piculs of Rice Sect,founded in the Han Dynasty in the Heming Mountains in Sichuan Province.Moism did not this position for long,its founder and Mo Zi’s teachings left an indelible impression on the Chinese mind.Legalism was comparatively late in securing its theoretical position ,yet it had tremendous influence upon the political life of its time.Legalism was a very strict and stern philosophy.

Confucianism and Its Practical Values

2.1 Major Points of Confucianism: (1)Yi,righteousness by justice; Li,moral ways of conduct ;Zhi,wisdom;Xin:faithfulness

2.2 Practical Values of Confucianism: (1)The ethical principle of Confucianism is its discovery of the ultimate in the moral character of human relatiomships .(2)Confucianism’s greatest contribution to the Chinese nation is its shaping and moulding of the Chinese character and national soul and its founding of the complete system of knowledge.Confucianism is practiced by officials and scholars in their offices and citizens.

Daoism and Its Practical Values

3.1 Major Points of Daoism;(1)The outstanding representative of this school was Lao Zi (2)Wu wei ,the Taoists hold that contemplation of the universe will lead to the discovery of the nameless first principle ,and to the disposition that should accompany such contemplation,and indeed the whole of life .Wuwei is a state of mind as well as a cardinal principle towards life.(3)De,It is the power of naturalness,of simplicity ,even of weakness.It teaches of survival ,of how to keep one’s own integrity in the time of dosoder.

3.2 Practical Values of Daoism:(1)Daoism is pursued by them in their private chambers or mountain retreats ,seeking to get rid of the cares of official life and the agonies in social experience.(2)Daoism as a religion ,together with Buddhism,it has had great impact on the thinking of the Chinese people ,as well as on the political ,economic and cultural life of the country.(3)After a brilliant beginning ,Daoism was gradually appropriated by those who wandered off in search of the secret of eternal life ,which led them into such a slough of superstitions that they eventually lost credit in the eyes of the intellectual class.

Major Points of Mohism and Its Practical Values

4.1 Major Points of Mohism

,close to the assertion that “all men are equal before God “(3)Mo Zi  embraced his own social 

ideal and put forward the idea that “Exaltation of the worthy the foundation of good government 

“

4.2 Practical Values of Mohism;(1)It had  an important place in the history Chinese . (2)Although Moism did not hold this position for long ,its founder and his teaching left an indelible .

Legalism and Its Practical Values

5.1 Major Points of Legalism(1)The outstanding representative of this this school was Shang Yang .(2)War as a means of strengthening the power of the ruler ,expanding the territory and making the people disciplined and submissive.(3)The state would be ordered by an exhaustive set of laws defining in detail the duties and responsibilities of all its members .(4)Severe punishment would restrain evil  and generous rewards would encourage what was beneficial to the strength and well-being of the state.

5.2 Practical Values of Legalism:(1)It had tremendous influence upon the political life of its time .(2)There came forward a group of technician of power who put the state and its interests ahead of all human and moral concerns and glorified the power of the king for the sake of the survival of the country.

Conclusion  ; Confucianism, Daoism, Moism and Legalism have an important role in the Chinese culture.The rich and ,in many ways ,unique civilization of China owes much in its shaping to the widespread influence of Confucianism ,Taoism ,which are generally regarded as the three roots of Chinese culture .The influence of these three philosophies as well as religions,especially of Confucisnism ,not only came to predominate in China for more than two thousand years but also was powerful in shaping the social and political life of Korea ,Japan and Indo-China.
