《孤独的割麦女》赏析

Abstract: Romanticism as one of the major branches of modern literature, there’s no denying that it has great influence on the whole western literary world. William Wordsworth is the great master of English romanticism and the representative of Lake Poet. Lyrical Ballads, collaborated with S.T. Coleridge, lays a foundation of English romanticism. This paper is the appreciation of The Solitary Reaper.

Introduction of the Author and His Writing Style

William Wordsworth is one of the greatest English poets in the nineteenth century. He open a new era of English literature by making English romanticism bloom, which also help him found a firm place in the history of English literature. As one of the pioneer of romanticism, his poets reflect many traits of romanticism. His style of writing is fresh, smooth, plain and vigorous. Most of his subject matter is natural scene and rural life which let us free from the stereotype of classicism and bring us a fresh and colorful world.

William Wordsworth is strict to his writing. He ever said: “ …all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerfull feelings”, and “it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility”. So it is. A loose phrase or an ambiguous expression will not satisfy a scrupulous writer. He aims at getting a word or a phrase completely expressing his thoughts. This is what we lack and what we should learn.

The Basic Characteristics of Romanticism

Romanticism emerged in the late of eighteenth century and bloomed in the first half of nineteenth century. It is one of the most important literary trend of thought in the western world. On the one hand, it succeeds and develops the humanism of the Renaissance which is a powerful resistance to the classicism of France. One the other hand, romanticism and the later realism form the two main literary branches of the western modern literature which produce the prosperous prospect being all the rage at that moment and have great effect on the later literature.

The romantic writers tend to describe nature and praise the beauty of nature. They would like to set the main characters in the natural world and the images are always graceful and peaceful beauty in the nature. They often make vivid contrast between the beauty of nature and the hideous aspects of reality. They also pay more attention to the medieval literature which is marked with abundant imaginations, free expression, sincere feelings and plain language. In addition, they emphasize artistic effect, such as contrast, hyperbole, transcendency of the characters and so on. Meanwhile, their works have clear subjective color that is they prefer to express the feeling of the individuals. In general, these four traits explain romanticism vividly.

Comment

The Solitary Reaper is one of the classic works of William Wordsworth which is based upon the background of common daily life. In the poem, a flush of feeling reveales spontaneously among William’s fresh and plain words. And the blank-verse endows the poem with natural rhythm and makes us involved in the poem. We can imagine a young girl singing and reaping in the field and how beautiful her songs are. And we even heard the nightingale’s chaunt and admire the poet’s superexcellent imagination.

From 1790 to 1791, William had been to France twice and he was the supporter of French revolution. However, he had to return to England for financial reason and saw his political dream died. So we also can see William’s misery in this poem—“Some natural sorrow, lose, or pain. That has been, and maybe again.” When the poet said “Will no one tell me what she sings?” And then he unflods his association about this. He thinks she is perhaps singing for misfortune of the past, the war or common daily trifles and indicates that they happened before and will replay. Through this way, William Wordsworth adds weight of feelings to make the poetry become more meaningful and more thought-provoking.

The language of this poetry is fresh and clean, simple and unadorned. The poet prefer to use ordinary language rather than use ornate terms. And this poet is orranged in a free and lyrical tone to make it full of musicality. Meanwhile, the images are not only clear and homely but profound and vivid, which are typical representative of romantic lyric. Just as it said in the poetry, “The music in my heart I bore. Long after it was heard no more”. It has light sorrow, read and graceful following. If we readers can have more knowledge of the author’s works and writing styles, we will have    better perceptivity and more daring imagination to appreciate the poetry.

In the poetry, William Wordsworth shows a picture of the rural scene: a Scottish girl works in the field alone, she sings a melancholy as she is reaping. The deep valleys is overflowing with the girl’s touching songs which, sometimes, makes us forget the sorrow or makes our hearts full of sad. William Wordsworth conveies a kind of sorrow to us by abundant imagination, sincere feelings and ordinary language.

As a romatic poet, William Wordsworth chooses a common girl working in the countryside as his main subjects. The ordinary implies profound feelings. He encourages us to discovery the beauty around us and in our daily life. From his point of view, the art of romantic poets is to make the common life and ordinary scene decoreated with imagination become strange, be familiared and be loved.

Poetry is to express and sing. What’s the girl singing? “Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow. For old, unhappy, far-off things. And battles long ago. Or is it some more humble lay. Familiar matter of today?” All the poet referred to is the forever themes of people’s sorrow, such as war, parting, natural sorrow, pain and loss. Here, the poet points to these only and leave broad space for imagination. So the theme is extended boundlessly and the melancholy distills and becomes a forever sorrowful song.

Why does the melancholy move the poet? In my opinion, the girl’s melancholy is the poet’s melancholy. He feels as lonely as the girl. Perhaps, he takes advantage of describing the lonely girl to express his own sense of alienation. And perhaps, he is affected by the girl’s songs which arouses the sense of depress and solitary buried in his heart. The poet integrates characters’ complicated inner world into the natural world, and lay particular emphasis on the characters’ inner world and the natural world’s influence to the characters.

From all above, The Solitary Reaper gives a good example of romantic poetry to our readers, and from it we can learn more about romantic literature and achieve various William Wordsworth’s writing styles.

Conclsion

As a literary giant in the world, William Wordsworth is largly influenced by Rousseau who appeals to return to nature. And most of William Wordsworth’s works’ theme is nature. In the contemporary world, we will benefit a lot from William Wordsworth’s view.
