Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of this book was one of the most interesting, yet most ambivalent writers in American literary history. He was called the “Moral Historian of Puritan New England” and had a strong feeling for the puritan past of the seventeenth century.
With that kind of concept, he wrote the Scarlet Letter which is a classic of American literature, a psychological melodrama about the cruel and unusual punishment of a sin committed out of love.
It showed us how Puritan persecuted people’s mind at that century through the description of the several characters in this book.
Hester , the heroine in this book was repeatedly subjected to torture by being put into the prisoner , exposed to public and worn the scarlet letter. Her religious belief was shaken by humiliation day by day. Spontaneously , her consciousness of resistance was produced. So Hester performed very bravely when she faced to the humiliation. What I appreciated most was just her response to the punishment. Maybe that was tragedy because of her lover’s death, but I still rejoice to see such a staunch female stand in front of me.
Dimondale, Hester’s lover ,a man of high rank was always the slave of religion because of his superstition towards God .He thought he was against God and most importantly against himself because he has committed adultery with Hester Prynne, resulting in an illegitimate child, Pearl. That was why his psychological anguish deepened, and he invented new tortures for himself. His sinning against himself, for which he ultimately paid the price of death.
Chillingworth, Hester’s husband who is a man deficient in human warmth. He ignored his wife for much of the time, yet expected her to nourish his soul with affection when he did condescend to spend time with her. He was self-absorbed and both physically and psychologically monstrous. His death was just a result of the nature of his character. He regarded revenge as the only purpose of his life. After Dimmesdale died, he no longer has a victim.
Pearl, a different character in this book represents the next generation away from Puritanical society. She seems to have been freed by Dimmesdale's public acceptance of her. And in accepting her publicly I feel that Dimmesdale destroyed the power that puritanical ethic could have played in her life. She went on to find happiness. Maybe Hawthorne was saying; we must rebel against the puritan ethic and find real life - with genuine wholesome values based on love and not control.
Though the character in this book is few, it has showed us a miniature of the social mentality at that time. We can not only find Author’s critical attitude towards Puritan ,but also the hope between the lines. That is just the skillful description of each character’s psychology and the profound meaning of this book makes it become a immortal masterpiece.
