This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and clean. He wore a collar but had no ID. I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood. But I’d never seen another boxer around.

The dog lay down beside my feet, his tongue lolling in a doggie smile. He didn’t seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.

“Alan!” I called. “You have to come see this!”

Alan joined me, and we sat together in awe for a moment. Then the boxer got up and walked off. In the following days, he’d sometimes appear in the backyard when Alan and I were outside. Other times,he’d wait for us on the front porch.

With each visit, I could feel the ache in my heart lessen. Seeing him was helping me work through my deep sorrow.

At work one day, a young man and an older woman I’d never seen before came in. I took down the man’s address to complete some paperwork and noticed he lived up the street from me.

His name was Tanner. The woman with him was his grandmother. He and his family had recently moved from Georgia.（伏笔）

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra Abrahamian, and I had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.

His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke (中暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly; his drool( 口 水 ) was also thick. Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said he would never be allowed into her new "home" because her children have allergies(过敏症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.

I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save him.

A heroic dog

Like most dogs whose homes are situated on large plots of land，one New Zealand dog regularly went off exploring through the farmland around his home for hours at a time.

But as Louie，a sheepdog rescued from a shelter when he was just a puppy，got older，his trips got shorter and shorter.Now that Louie is 12 years old，he chooses to stay close to home and hardly ever goes out to explore any more，which is why his family was so worried when he recently disappeared and didn't return home as usual.

“My mother was a little upset as he had stopped his wandering，” said Marolyn Diver，whose parents own Louie.“We were very concerned that he might forget where his home was.” But thankfully，Louie turned up at the house a few hours later.“He looked so tired and had basically just collapsed(崩溃)，”Marolyn said.“We were concerned that someone might have hurt him. But then we realized there was a small note attached to Louie's collar.After reading the note，I felt complete relief and relaxed，and then my heart melted.”

Many years ago, Art, who loved rural life, bought a house in the countryside and lived there peacefully with his wife, Eva. Eva was an animal lover, and she kept several chickens, two cats and one dog in their backyard. Art liked exploring in mountains and forests. He was enthusiastic and warm-hearted. Every time he drove out, no matter who he encountered, he would greet them.

Walking with Misty

In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of their desire.

“But why?” they begged. “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” “But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, yes, and yes.” “I don’t believe you.” “We will. We promise.”

They didn’t. From day two, neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots (拍照), to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one.

Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld (心灵相惜). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand. In no time, she became fifth appendage (附加物), snoring on my home-office couch as I worked, cradling against my feet as I read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched television.

Then one day — January 1, 2007, to be exact — my husband’s doctor uttered an unthinkable word: leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospital doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. During those six months of hospitalizations, Becky, 12 at the time, adjusted to other adults being in the house when she returned from school. My work colleagues adjusted to my taking off at a moment’s notice for medical emergencies. Every part of my life changed: no part of my old routine remained.

Save one: Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces, I declined because I knew they had their own households to deal with.

As the months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal：to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada. 

Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens（镜片）. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times. 

As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread. 

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts. 

Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.（经典三连动） Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws（爪子）.

Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’    t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. （常理，一般现在时）So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar（吼叫）, the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al, because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox(火绒箱) and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm.“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.”Steve pulled Brady’s leash（皮带） and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke，and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…

   Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.

   Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him，but he didn’t come back.

   They had no choice but to leave(别无选择，只能） him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up a slope（斜坡）. He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue（didn't know） which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.
