
音节的划分:
(1) 在两个音节的相邻处有两个辅字组时,一个辅字组属于前面的音节,一个属于后面的音节。例如:
(2) 在两个音节的相邻处只有一个辅字组时,如果前面音节里的元音是长音(长元音和双元音)则辅字组属于后面一个音节,如果前面一个音节里的元音是短音(短元音),则辅字组属于前面一个音节。例如:
观察下列单词音节的划分方式
注:island Tuesday Thursday 三个词中的s起连结作用,划分到前一个音节中去。
和字母一样,字组也具有不可分割性。不管是元字组还是辅字组都具有不可分割性,所以在给一个单词划分音节时,不能把字组拆分到两个音节中去。例如:但有的词在遇到类似情况时还要考虑到词的来源。例如:wardroom是复合词,dr被划分到不同的音节里,是因为ward
和room本来就是两个词,按照构词法将原词划分开。类似的词还有shep-herd等。
观察下列单词音节划分的方式
重读音节
单词中读音特别响亮的音节。重读符号为’,标注在重读音节前左上方,如:也可以直接在单词里标注,如:to`morrow 。次重读符号,,标注在重读音节前左下方。
单音节词 单音节词多数是重读音节,标记读音时不需要使用重读符号。例如:
双音节词 双音节词通常在第一个音节重读。例如:
注: teacher一词中的 ch 划分到前一个音节中,主要是为了保留主干词 teach 的完整性。
多音节词 多音节词通常在倒数第三个音节上重读。在多音节单词中有时还要使用次重读符号, ,用来说明其中的元字组要按重读音节中的读音规则发音。例如:
双音节词和多音节词重音位置的变化
①含有 a- be- com- con- de- dis- em- en- es- ex- for- im- in- mis- per- pre- pro- re- trans- 等前缀的词通常在第二个音节上重读。加前缀或后缀通常不会改变原词的重音位置。
②含有元音重出的词
有一些词的拼写中有 ia ie io 等两个元音字母连在一起,这叫做元音重出。元音重出虽然有时只发一个元音,但在计算音节数目的时候算两个音节。
③含有 de- in- re- con- pre- 等前缀的词也可以在第一个音节上重读,往往因为重读位置不同而词的意义和词类也不同。
④以 -ic 结尾的词在 -ic 前的一个音节上重读。
开音节
1绝对开音节:单个元音字母后面没有辅音字母的重读音节。例如:
②相对开音节:单个元音字母后面加单个辅音字母,再加一个不发音字母 e 构成的重读音节。例如:
闭音节 单个元音字母后面有辅字组(r w y 除外)且以辅字组结尾的重读音节。

有些读音现象不能代表现代英语拼读的发展方向,这些不具有代表性的读音现象不能作为规则来掌握。拼读规则学习中应尽量回避列举含有这些发音现象的例词,初学者应单独记忆。以下单词中个别字母的读音现象不符合规则。
元音字母只有五个,但元音字组数量较多,常用的也有十几个。许多元音字组在重读音节中还会有不同的读音,记忆起来比较困难。给元音字组分类,目的是为了方便学者识记。元音字组分为 -r 音节、 -re 音节和普通元音字组三类。

leopard → leop-ard 其中的字母o不发音 英语中有五个单元音的发音较长,带有长音符号: [ i : ] 、 [ B : ] 、 [ C : ] 、 [ U : ] 、 [ E : ] ,另外还有八个双元音的发音也较长: [ e i ] 、 [ a i ] 、 [ C i ] 、 [ i E ] 、 [ Z E ] 、 [ U E ] 、 [ a U ] 、 [ E U ] 。长音指的就是这五个长元音和八个双元音,其他元音称为短音。
有的元字组在重读音节中本来是应该发长音的,但因为某种原因将其 短 化为短音。 长音短化为短音,无外乎两种原因:要么是因为词的音节数目多需要控制词的音长,要么是因为该词是个常用词,短化后读起来显得简洁一些。

判断单词读音的基本方法
1 、数一数元字组的数目。有几个元字组就有几个音节(以 -le –al –m –n 等字母结尾的词可能含有成音节)。
2 、找出重读音节(双音节词通常是第一个音节重读、多音节词通常在倒数第三个音节上重读)。含有 -ic 或 -tion -sion 的词,在 -ic -tion -sion 前的一个音节上重读。
3 、以元字组为核心,适当划分音节。(根据音节的划分结果就可以判断单词的读音。含有非重读音节的词,如果其重读音节与非重读音节之间只有一个辅字组,则可能出现不同的音节划分结果。)
