Love of life by Jack London
It is a story about fighting and believing. Love of life, written in 1906, is one of Jack London’s greatest short fictions. In the 19th century, thousands of people took part in “the Gold Rush”. The sources of Love of Life were from the life that the miners struggle with the severe environment. In the gold rush life, man and nature struggled with each other.
Love of Life tells a story that a man conquered difficulties and finally rescued. The hero of this fiction was a man, even with no name mentioned, was abandoned by his friend on the way back from their journey of joining the gold rush. Facing the desperate situations alone, he had to try his best to get rid of those sufferings. As winter was just around the corner, he had no choice but to overcome the bleeding, cold, and the serious starvation. At first, he could only limp painfully itch by itch. But as time marched on, he suffered more and more pain and hunger, and what was worse, he had sprained his ankle, so he had to scrawl on his hands and legs in the end. His rifle was out of bullets, so there was no way he could get something to eat easily. He had to count his matches again and again to acquire a sense of safety. He fought against nature with his badly injured body, his empty gun, and his extremely strong will. He tossed almost everything including his gold for living for a longer time until someone found and rescued him. Unfortunately, he met a sick wolf, following him and licking his blood. With his strong will, he defeated the wolf and drank its blood. Eventually, he rescued by a whaling ship.
People who have read the novel all knows that though the plot is simple, it is rather exciting: bad weather, cold polar and a group of hungry wolves composed the inaccessible environment. Even in such a difficult situation, the hero performed extraordinary courage and never gave up. In the desert, he kept his life by eating little food he could get, dragged his weaken feet on the wide wasteland: fell, moved up, scrawled, and repeated these actions again and again. During the war against a sicken wolf, his desire for survival made him wake up. His nerve have dulled while his brain was full of weird illusion and wonderful dreams .Eventually, he defeated that wolf and emitted the light of life. Here, his faith in life and survival was beyond the survival instinct. The story, which had spared so much room to psychological description, is not a moving plot, but reading the text somehow gives a strong shock. Faced with threat of starvation and the wolf, as well as the even more terrible environment, the dedication, persistence reflected a miracle of life.
The author expressed some views of life. First, however serious we are, we shouldn’t lose our hope. In the novel, the hero always ensured himself that the destination is around the corner and his partner, who had abandoned him before, was just waiting for him. He even countered his reminded watches again and again to gain himself hope. That’s the key to survive --- never give in, never give up. Second, sometimes money is a burden to us. After suffering pains for several times, the hero threw his gold, because it had become a burden for him. His friend Bill, instead, chose to hold his gold until his death. So, try to give up something when it is unnecessary for you or when it becomes harmful to you. Third, from the novel love of life, we can learn that survival is instinct of human: we can enjoy the happiness and joy from life, and we also need to suffer the pain that life gives to us. By describing the hero’s hard survival in the desperate environment, the author showed us how strong will the hero had for survival and how deep love of life.
Life is precious and cheerful. As human being, we only have one chance. In Love of Life, Jack London not only shows the power of life, but also interprets the spirit of never giving up. This is the key --- love you life, cherish you life.
