In a utilitarian society, where people run about in pursuit of personal gains at the expense of others, it is really difficult to follow one’s inclination. Ever since childhood we have been pursuing, going to school, looking for a job, falling in love, getting married, and striving for success in career and accumulating wealth, but never have we seemed to be contented with ourselves. However, striving for success in career and seeking material profits are two entirely different outlooks on life or, if you will, two intrinsically different views on the definition of hardship and happiness. But there is one thing that applies in either case, i.e. life is no plain sailing, and things, going and growing, are independent of man’s will. One should instead of indulging in delusions of daydreaming, temper himself in life, as the saying goes, “Heaven does not let down the one that has a will.” Even so, one cannot expect to succeed in everything he undertakes. In short, where there is pursuit, there is perplexity, and that is the way of life.

①生存在功利社会，奔波劳顿，勾心斗角，若想做到从心所欲，难矣哉！

这句话没有主语，翻译成英文是要先确定主语，可以是people或者是everyone; every person。第一个短句“生存在功利社会”，可以用分词结构，living in a utilitarian society,

奔波劳顿：的意思就是四处奔波，译为：run about

勾心斗角：意思是以他人为代价追求自己的利益：in pursuit of personal gains at the expense of others

所以奔波劳顿、勾心斗角翻译为：run about in pursuit of personal gains at the expense of others

从心所欲：follow one’s inclination; do as one pleases;follow what the heart desires

截然不同的：意思就是不一样的，翻译为different即可，当然加上entirely会更好。

人生观：outlooks on life

迥异的intrinsically different如果不知道intrinsic（固有的，本质的，内在的）这个词，可以用totally

参考译文：However, striving for success in career and seeking material profits are two different outlooks on life or, if you will, two intrinsically different views on the definition of hardship and happiness.

④但有一点是共同的，即人生的道路并非平坦的康庄大道，事物的发展往往不以人的意志为转移。

康庄大道：这里以“一帆风顺”的意思来翻译：plain sailing，或者用其他意译方法，表达出“顺利”“没有挫折”之类的意思都可以。

参考译文：But there is one thing that applies in either case, i.e. life is no plain sailing, and things, going and growing, are independent of man’s will.

幻觉：delusion。这个词与illusion的区别在于，illusion仅表示“幻觉，错觉，幻想”，delusion则有“受骗，；妄想症”的含义，用来表达这里的“幻觉”一词，更有“欺骗性的，不真实的”这种意味。

磨砺：比喻磨练译为temper; steel oneself

“苍天不负有心人”：谚语翻译关键在于译出意思，“不负”意思就是不会让…失望，翻译为let down

“天遂人愿”遂：随，就。意思是上天满足人的愿望。换句换说人不可能每件事都成功。

“有追求必有烦恼”可套用There is a will, there is a way.之中，there is…, there is…结构.

烦恼，可翻译为perplexity。201003的汉译英真题翻译最后一句话也用到了这个词，请大家熟记。
