我为何而生

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

我的一生被三种简单却又无比强烈的激情所控制：对爱的渴望，对知识的探索和对人类苦难的难以抑制的怜悯。这些激情像狂风，把我恣情吹向四方，掠过苦痛的大海，迫使我濒临绝望的边缘。

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I have found

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always it brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

永远别放弃梦想

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled，little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said，“Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I' m eighty－seven years old. Can I give you a hug？”I laughed and enthusiastically responded，“Of course you may.”and she gave me a giant squeeze.

开学的第一天教授做了自我介绍，他还要求我们去结识某位我们还不认识的人。就在我站起来四处张望时，一只手轻轻地搭在了我的肩上。我转过身一看，一位满脸皱纹个子矮小的老太太正冲着我微笑。这微笑使她浑身光彩照人。她说：“嘿，帅小伙儿，我叫罗斯，今年８７岁。我可以拥抱你吗？”我笑了起来，热情地答道：“当然可以啦。”她紧紧地拥抱了我。

“Why are you in college at such a young，innocent age？”I asked. She jokingly replied，“I'm here to meet a rich husband，get married，have a couple of children，and then retire and travel.”“No，seriously？”I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“你为什么在这么年轻而天真的年龄上大学？”我问。她开玩笑地回答说：“我要在此遇到一个有钱的丈夫，结婚，生几个孩子，然后退休，去旅游。”“真的吗？不对吧？”我问她。我很想知道，她这么大年纪，是什么促使她接受这样的挑战呢。

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one.”she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milk shake We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

“我一直梦想接受大学教育。而现在我如愿以偿了。”她告诉我说。课后我们一同到学生活动楼，共饮了一杯巧克力泡沫牛奶。我们一下子就成了朋友。在此后的三个月中，我们每天都一起离开课堂，聊起来没完没了。在她向我传授她的智慧和经验时，我总是着了迷似地倾听这个“时间机器”。

Over the course of the year，Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed up her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech，she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said，“I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent(一种威士忌的牌子)  and this whisky is killing me. I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just t ell you what I know.” As we laughed she cleared her throat and began：“We do not stop playing because we are old；we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young，being happy，and achieving success.”

“You have to laugh and find humor every day.”

“每天都要笑，每天都要找到幽默。”

“You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams，you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead an d don't even know it.”

“一定要有梦想。失去了梦想，人就死了。在我们周围有那么多行尸走肉般的人，他们却不自知。”

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing，you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty－seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty－eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.”

“变老和成熟是有巨大区别的。如果你１９岁，在床上躺一整年，而不做一件有成效的事情，你会到２０岁。如果我８７岁，在床上待一年什么也不做，我也会到８８岁。谁都会老，那不需要天才或能力。我的意思是要通过在变化中不断地寻找机会而达到成熟。”

“Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did，but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

“不要后悔。年长的人一般不会为我们所做的事而后悔，而会为我们所没有做的事后悔。只有充满遗憾的人才惧怕死亡。”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing“The Rose.”She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

 她勇敢地唱了一首《玫瑰之歌》作为结束，还要求我们每个人学习歌词并在日常生活中将词意付诸行动。

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years a go. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

年末，罗斯结束了她多年前就开始的大学生涯，取得了学位。毕业一周之后，罗斯在睡梦中平静地去世。

Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

两千多名大学生出席了她的葬礼，对这位了不起的女士表示敬意。她以自身范例教育我们：发挥自己的潜能永不为晚。

Remember，growing older is mandatory，growing up is optional.

记住，衰老是无法抗拒的，而成熟却是可以选择的。

勇气是力量的源泉

It takes strength to do what must be done when the work is unpleasant and uncomfortable.

当你要完成那必须做的，却又是令人讨厌，不悦的事时，那需要力量。

It takes strength to persist in the face of obstacles, when it would be much easier to simply give up.

面对困阻时，径直放弃更为容易，而坚持不懈，那需要力量。

It takes strength to be polite to someone when that person has been rude to you.

以礼相待那些对你粗暴无礼的人，那需要力量。

It takes strength to be truthful when a lie would be more convenient.

说句诺言图个方便，但要开诚布公，那需要力量。

It takes strength to build for the future.

创建未来，需要力量。

It takes strength to resist temptations and distractions.

抵受诱惑纷扰，需要力量。

It takes strength to do what is right.

坚持真理，需要力量。

It takes strength to do al these things. And all the while, these are the very things that build even more strength.

要做到上述所说，需要力量。然而一直以为，这正是增添力量的关键。

Be truthful, do what you know is right, put forth effort when it is called for, persist, and the more you do so, the more easily you'll be able to do so. Exercise your strength, and you'll surely grow stronger, more capable, and successful in each endeavor.

要坦诚，要做你认为对的事，当有需要时便应奋力而为，并坚持到底；你越是这样，越会觉得游刃有余。锻炼你内心的力量，你必将更强更能干，力所至，功毕成！

既然付出就不要期待回报

A man is known by the company he keeps they say. If it is so, then everyone is bound to have their baggage of loneliness with them as companions. loneliness is not something that doesn't exist at all with any human being on earth. Every human being feels lonely in his life at some point or other. It's but natural to have such feeling ,because that's what makes us all human and that is why we are as we are now. 

他们说人总是为他身边的人所知的。如果是这样的话，每个人都注定与孤独为伍。孤独感是每个人都会有的，都会在某个时候，感到孤独，这是非常自然的。因为孤独感令我们成人，并令我们成为现在的我们。

If we shed some light on why we feel aloof or lonely at times, we would be very much astonished or even probably surprised by the results. We ourselves are responsible for our selfdefined gloominess. This is because at times we really feel that we are uncared for or feel someone doesn't understand us.

如果我们再三思考为什么我们有的时候会觉得高处不胜寒或孤独时，我们会对分析的结果感到非常的吃惊。我们自己应该对我们自己所定义的忧郁付责任。因为有的时候，我们真的觉得我们被忽视或者不被理解。

Sometimes we over analyze real life situations and have this growing sense of self pity inside us. This feeling always gives us thoughts which picturise us always receiving the wrong end of the stick in life. The truth might not always be true if we touch our heart and see. Its just that our expectations in life and from people around us or circumstances that we are facing, have got the better of us. Expectation is the silent killer which murders millions of mushy and time tested relationships. If there would have been no expectations from anyone, the world would have been a much better place to be. If there would have been no expectations, not many people would have had an aching heart and a life long grouse against there would have been better haves. If it wouldn't have been for unreasonable expectations not many couples would have divorced each other.

有的时候我们过度的分析了真实的情况，这令我们自己产生了自己怜悯自己的感觉。这种感觉经常会给我们错觉，如果我们扪心自问，并不总是真的，它们只是我们对身边人和环境过高的期待。期待是一个沉默的杀手，谋杀了无数经过时间考验的人也人之间的关系。如果没有了对任何人的期待，那么这个世界将会并得更好。如果没有期待，就不会有那么多人感到心疼，而对于有些人，一生的埋怨也就不会那么长了。如果没有那些不切实际的期待，也就不会有那么多夫妻离婚了。　

How to come out of expectations them? Good question. The answer is when you give something, don't expect anything in return. When our mother gave birth to us, she never expected that we will give birth to her. She has just fulfilled her desire to raise a family and live for them. In the same way, let our actions make us live for our self and let not expectation screw up the major portion of your lives. Let us have the freedom and will power to express our love, affection and longingness for people whenever we feel. Let us not restrict our freedom of expression just because he or she is not responding the way we want them to.

那么怎样才能跳出期望呢？好问题。答案是，当我们给予的时候，不要期待任何报答。我们的妈妈给予我们生命，决没有期望我们也给予她生命。她仅仅是完成了她拥有一个家庭并为之而活的理想。同样，让我们为自己而活，不要让期待成为你生命的大部分。让我们自由的表达我们的爱感动和渴望。当别人没有象我们期待的那样回应，我们也不要失去表达感情的自由。

Well all in all a little bit of loneliness is good for a self-analysis to keep a check over your actions. Introspection always makes you communicate with the innerself, but too much of introspection can make you scale the altitude of self pity. So show restrain at the right time.

当然，总的来说，一点点的孤独对一个人审视自己的行为是有好处的。自省总是会使你与你的心灵有所交流。但是过度的自省，会使我们总感觉遗憾，因此，还是适而可止的好。

不能避免逆境 却能选择面对的态度

生活中，决定成败的主要因素之一是我们对待逆境的态度。虽然我们不能避免逆境，但是我们能选择面对它的态度。

伟人的传记中， 都有许许多多的例子讲述他们如何克服了逆境，共同之处就在于他们都没有被打败，或者从此变得消沉。他们选择了他们的态度——乐观积极。他们勇敢地迎接了挑战，他们也笑到了最后。

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle the two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, "You mean fortunately." He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.

My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to grumble as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally as I wend my way up the incline I console myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationery exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smug smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.

Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a University degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved."

One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From time to time we all face hardships, problems, accidents, afflictions and difficulties. Some are of our making but many confront us through no fault of our own. Whilst we cannot choose the adversity we can choose our attitude towards it.

Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs amputated following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was an inspiration to others during the war. He said, "Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't do this or that. That's nonsense. Make up your mind, you'll never use crutches or a stick, then have a go at everything. Go to school, join in all the games you can. Go anywhere you want to. But never, never let them persuade you that things are too difficult or impossible."

How can you change your attitude towards the adversity that you face? Try these steps:

Confront the problem. Do not avoid it.

Deliberately take a positive attitude and write down some benefits or advantages of the situation.

Visualise how you will feel when you overcome this obstacle.

Develop an action plan for how to tackle it.

Smile and get cracking.

The biographies of great people are littered with examples of how they took these kinds of steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become defeatist or depressed. They chose their attitude. They opted to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.

冲破黎明前的黑暗 终见阳光

Difficulties arise in the lives of us all. What is most important is dealing with the hard times, coping with the changes, and getting through to the other side where the sun is still shining just for you.

生活中困难在所难免，最重要的是要挺过艰难的时刻，积极应对种种变故，冲破黎明前的黑暗，你终会看到只属于自己的灿烂阳光。

It takes a strong person to deal with tough times and difficult choices. But you are a strong person.

只有强者才能勇敢直面困难时刻，做出艰难抉择。而你正是这样一位强者。

It takes courage. But you possess the inner courage to see you through.

要有勇气。你拥有披荆斩棘的勇气。

It takes being an active participant in your life. But you are in the driver's seat, and you can determine the direction you want tomorrow to go in.

你必须在这场游戏人生中积极主动。而且你正在驾驭这场游戏，并决定着自己明天前进的方向。

Hang in there... and take care to see that you don't lose sight of the one thing that is constant, beautiful, and true: Everything will be fine---and it will turn out that way because of the special kind of person you are.

天堂里的红衣服

泰勒不愿屈服于致命的疾病。我们都惊叹生命带给他那纯朴的欢乐和赋予他的活力。泰勒的妈妈经常逗他说，他跑得那么快，得给他穿件红衣服，这样才能一眼发现他。

泰勒病逝前几天，招呼我到他病床前，低声对我说：“我可能就要死了，我不害怕。我死时请给我穿上红色的衣服。妈妈答应我她也会来天堂的，她来的时候我会在玩，我得保证她能找到我。”

In my dual profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.

Tyler was born infected with HIV: his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medications to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.

Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler's mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him.

This dreaded disease eventually wore down even the likes of a little dynamo like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to survive, Tyler's mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that she would be with him soon in heaven.

A few days before his death, Tyler beckoned me over to his hospital bed and whispered, "I might die soon. I'm not scared. When I die, please dress me in red. Mom promised she's coming to heaven, too. I'll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me."
