W: Did I ever tell you about the time I kept loads of fish?

M: No, I don’t think so.

W: Well, I had some goldfish. And they lived in a fish tank above the kitchen sink. But these two

fish were really active----they loved to jump in the air, especially when someone was doing the

dishes.

M: No way!

W: Seriously! The next day, I put a lid across the top of the tank. Then I went on a business trip

for a couple of days. When I came back, I ran into the kitchen and saw the tank was empty.

M: Oh, no!

W: The fish had jumped out of the tank! They were lying in the sink! Fortunately, there was some

water in it.

W: How long have you worked for your company?

M: For twenty-five years. Since I left college.

W: So, when did you study engineering?

M: I started college when I was nineteen and I qualified as an engineer about four years later.

W: And have you always lived in Pennsylvania?

M: No. I lived in lots of different places. In the energy business, you live where the work is.

W: Have the local people been friendly?

M: Yes, they have. Well. Most people anyway.

W: Ah, but not everyone?

M: Some people didn’t want us here in the beginning because they were worried about the

M: Hello, my name is Lukas Royle, and I am a glass artist. I must say that is wasn’t the job that my parents had hoped I’d get. According to them, a much more suitable thing to do was to work as a

skilled technician. I’ve always been artistic. I was lucky enough to find a job in a furnit

while I was still at art school. By the time I graduated I’d managed to save up a bit of money, could rent a small studio and start my life as an independent artist.

I took part in various exhibitions and one day a few pieces of mine were sold to a well-known

sportsman. He showed them to some of his friends. They then started dropping into my studio to

see how I worked. Reviews are important for an artist. Mt works caught an art reviewer’s he spoke highly of them in the magazine he wrote for. After that, loads more people visited my

website, and I was interviewed by a national newspaper.

I do work a lot, but of course I have time off too. A lot of my friends are into hill walking. I am not

so interested in that and prefer cycling, which a bunch of us often do at weekend. I used to go

running with a couple of neighbors, but I’ve been that up because I don’t have that much time
