WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS:

The meeting of the East Tennessee Military Affairs Council was held on Thursday, September 1st, 2011, at the Knoxville Chamber, ETMAC President John Dyess presiding. A total of 52 members and guests were present. The August meeting summary was approved as written. The treasurer’s report shows a current balance of $12,103.70. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

∙The Tennessee Fisher House is trying to raise money to bring a Fisher House to Murfreesboro, TN. For more info go to http://www.tennesseefisherhouse.org/ 

∙PING offers free golf clubs to severely wounded Veterans. For more info contact PING at www.ping.com 

∙The 2011 ETMAC Veterans Day Luncheon will be held at the Knoxville Convention Center on November 11th at 12:30 pm. The change of venue was due to being overcrowded at the Foundry. The price for the luncheon will be $27 for individual or $270 for a table of ten. ETMAC is still working to find a featured speaker. You can register for the luncheon on line at http://veteransdayluncheon2011.eventbrite.com or go to http://www.etmac.org/assets/2011_Veterans_Day_Luncheon_Flyer.pdf to print the reservation form. 

∙The American Legion Post 2 will be sponsoring the 2011 Knoxville Veterans Day Parade. The parade will be held on November 11 and starts at 10:45 am in Downtown Knoxville. To participate, complete the application located at legionknox.org 

∙ETMAC needs someone to volunteer to run the webpage www.ETMAC.org please contact John Dyess is you’re interested.

∙Homeless Veterans Stand Down (Clyde Vincent): Will be held on November 3rd in Knoxville. For more info go to http://www.kavsd.org/Our_History.html

∙Smoky Mountain Service Dogs (Mike Kitchens): New organization that places service dogs to disabled Veterans, autistic children, and others with physical and psychological disabilities. Lucy is the first dog they are looking to place. For more info go to http://smokymountainservicedogs.org/index.asp

∙Tennessee Valley Fair (LTC Scott Suchomski): This year’s “Hometown Heroes Day” will be held on 9/11/2011. Admission for military, Veterans, police officers, firemen, and teachers is $1. All proceeds from evening concert will go towards HonorAir.

∙Air Force Association (Jim Mungenast): This year’s Cyber Patriot competition will be held with local high schools in the area. For more info go to http://www.uscyberpatriot.org/Pages/default.aspx also the 4th Annual Bud Bacon Memorial Gold Tourney will be held on October 10th at Royal Oaks CC. 

∙Job Fair (John Dyess): Will be held on September 10th, from 9:00 am till 11:30 am at the TN Army National Guard Armory at 3330 Sutherland Ave. For more info contact Joe Holland at joeholland2295@yahoo.com

SENIOR ROTC UNITS

∙UT Air Force ROTC (LTC Brian Delamater): Cadets are currently back in school. On October 28, they will be having their annual “Dining Out”. They are always looking for speakers to address cadets. Please contact LTC Delamater if you’re interested.  

∙UT Army ROTC (LTC Danny Kelley): Working on a historical project. A battle flag was never awarded to the unit in the US-Mexican War and they are trying to get their streamer from 167 years ago. 

MILITARY UNIT ACTIVITY

∙US Army Recruiting Company (CPT Scott Glidden): They will be having a “Flight Simulator” at Boomsday. Due to budget, they will be shut down till October 1, 2011. From John Dyess: Next March at Ft. Benning, GA, the Army will be offering the “Army Strong Experience”. Anyone interested in attending please contact John Dyess.

∙134th Air Refueling Wing (COL Tommy Cauthen): They have been supporting NATO aircraft with Operation Unified Protector. In the fall they will have continuous rotating support for CENTCOM. They will also be having a large ORI inspection coming up. Recently the Airbase had the largest deployment of one central location of Marine aircraft since the Vietnam War due to Hurricane Irene.  

∙1/230 Air Cavalry Squadron (MAJ Crawford): The Navy relocated aircraft to their squadron for Hurricane Irene. They have flown over 3000 hours this year out of East Tennessee. In July they had a fatal accident that killed two aviators, Daniel Cole and Thomas Williams, Jr. On September 24, they will be having the Tennessee Fallen Aviator Memorial Bass Tournament at Fort Loudon – Tellico Launch Ramp. For more info call SSG Steve Ouellette at 865-684-5027.

∙844th Engineering Battalion (MAJ Al Floyd):  They had their “Family Day” last month. Thanks to everyone that attended. They will be heading to Montgomery, AL in a few weeks for a workshop. Always looking to do projects out in the community. Next year’s training will be in Hawaii. A unit will be going to Germany. 

∙I.G. Brown Training and Education Center (Chief Master Sergeant Don Felch): They have been approved for a new building with dormitory rooms and classrooms thanks to Col. Currently they have 194 NCO’s on board right now. They also have 53 Airman Leadership School students. They have a total student load of 247 on campus. That total jumps to 358 students when they offer satellite classes around the world. They are providing free WI-FI to everyone at the airbase. 

∙Naval Operations Support Center (Chief Johnson): On September 11, they will be giving a piece of steel from the World Trade Center to be housed at the Navy Operation Support Center. The Navy Ball will be held on October 1, 2011 and it open to everyone to attend. Check out the website at knoxvillenavyball.org

MILITARY AND VETERANS ORGANIZATIONS

∙East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Association (Joleen Dewald):  On May 7, 2012 they will be hosting the 2nd Annual Medal of Honor Dinner. They will not be having a Veterans Day event this year at the Memorial. Joleen has a contact that wants to donate an elevator for a house to a Veteran that could need it. 

∙Honor Air (Joe Sutter): Recently held a Radiothon and raised over $47,000 for HonorAir. Flight #11 is scheduled for October 5th. To support Honor Air Knoxville, please go to http://www.honorairknoxville.com/. On September 24, the American Legion Riders are having a Poker Run to benefit HonorAir.

∙Ben Atchley State Veterans Home (Doug Ottinger): The widow of Daniel Cole recently planted a plant in their facility in honor of Daniel. They have a couple residents going on the HonorAir flight in October. They will be having a Patriotic display outside their facility. Visit their homepage at http://www.tsvh.org/knoxville/index.html.  They are always looking for organizations to spend time with the residents. If you’re interested, please call 862-8100.

∙American Red Cross Blount County (Jess Hernandez): Currently have a SAF grant for fiscal year 2012 which can be used for Yellow Ribbon events, family days and other events. They also have 2 Nursing Assistant Scholarships available. Contact Jess at 865-983-0821 for more info.

∙American Red Cross Knox County (Janice Campbell): Also have a SAF grant for the fiscal year 2012 for Yellow Ribbons, Welcome Home events, family days and other events. They also provide bus tickets for Veterans to Johnson City, Nashville, and Murfreesboro. 

∙Knox County Veterans Affairs Office (Richard Julian): They are located at 1000 North Central Street in Knoxville. Their number is 865-215-55. 

∙Blount County Veterans Affairs Office (Nathan Weinbaum): They are located at 305 Court Street in Maryville. Their number is 273-5760.  

∙Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (Jim Foggin): Recently participated in a family day for the 844th. Encourages all unit commanders to ask an ESGR representative to speak to their units and spouses. They have also been participating in Yellow Ribbon events. They also offer an Employment Assistance Program for the guard and reserve that have been deployed and don’t have a job when they return. There are currently around 91,000 mobilized from the guard and reserve.

∙American Legion (Marvin Tuggle): Will be participating in the Dedication Ceremony for the new Veterans Cemetery in October. They also supported the recent HonorAir flight # 10.

∙Veterans of Foreign Wars (Tom DeHoog): The Knoxville post was chartered in 1929 and are being recognized as an “All-American” post at their National Convention. Go to www.vfw.org to find out about all the programs they offer to Veterans.   

∙Tennessee Veterans Business Association (Jonathan Williams): The Business Expo will be January 23rd and 24th. They currently have a job board at their webpage. http://www.jointvba.org/   Veterans and service members looking for a job can send their resumes to resumes@jointvba.org On September 14, TDVA Commission Many-Bears Grinder at 1:00 pm will be speaking to the TVBA group. 

∙Marine Corps League (Eric Nash): The annual Mud Run will be held on September 10. For more info go to www.mclknox.org On October 15, they are hosting a Rifle Shoot. For more info call Jim Miller at 865-719-2856.
