Which Is The Priority, Knowledge or Skills ?

It is now prevalent that an increasing number of universities tend to offer graduate students skills by which they can find employment readily. As a report issued by China Information Survey Center reveals, 59.3% of universities have a tendency to offer this kind of skills. 

On the contrary, some people believe the main function of university should be to access knowledge for its sake. I once read an article written by a professor from Peking University in 21st Century Newspaper and it is entitled “Education in Modern World”. The author emphasizes the vital importance of college knowledge, which is the foundation of every skill that we can get from the later practice.

      Through the heated argument a great deal of attention has been given to the opposite between knowledge and skills.  Which is the priority with regard to the university education?  Knowledge or skills? Obviously, there are tremendous distinctions between knowledge and skills, which can contribute to our wise sense. Firstly, we can obtain them by different methods. Knowledge can be learned from the teaching material while skills can be absorbed through our daily practice and connection. Secondly, they function differently during our life. Knowledge which only be applied to the practice appropriately will make a huge difference so it is the root of the skills. In my respect, we should combine them together instead of considering them separately. That is to say, we can learn knowledge as well as skills; therefore, we must change our educational system to achieve our goals. When it comes to knowledge, we must realize the importance of skills as soon as possible. When we are studying knowledge, we must expose ourselves in practice in order to learn deeply. Meanwhile ,when we face troubles in learning, we must look for the solutions from the practice.

To sum up, with the rapid development of modern technology, it is rational that the combination between knowledge and skills will inevitably be a flowing tide. The contradiction from them can be seen as a faithful reflection which shows social extremely demand in knowledge and skills. Faced with this situation, we’d better equipped us with knowledge and skills . Only in this way can we arrive at the apex of our career.
