For years, business people in Western Europe were worried. They knew they could not compete(竞争) against business from the US. The United States is much larger and had many more resources than any Western European country.
Some European people realized that the European nations need to join together to help each other. If they could forget their language differences and the differences in customs (风俗), they might become strong competition against other countries.
In 1958, six of the European countries---Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany and Italy got together and decided to cooperate (合作). They called their group the European Economic Community, or the Common Market. These countries agreed to join their resources together.
Within a few years, the European Economic Community worked so well that its members were more prosperous (繁荣) than many other European nations. Soon, other nations began to realize advantages(好处) of the Common Market. Today the Common Market includes most of the important countries in Western Europe. It is helping Western Europe again to take its place as a leader among the industrial nations of the world.

Everybody knows that a favorite food of the Americans is the hamburger.
The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food , wait just a few minutes and then when the food is ready they carry it to their tables themselves. They can either eat it in the restaurant or take the food out in a plastic box and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. Then they drive off and eat in their cars or wherever they like.
Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish , or chicken, or sandwiches, and also soft drinks, coffee, and so on.
Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is not too expensive. For many people, this is very important. In the United States, about 50 percent of all married woman with children work outside the home. They are often too busy or too tired to cook dinner for the family at night and fast food restaurants are a great help to them.

Some people think they have answers to problems of automobile (机动车) and polluting large cities. Their answer is bicycle or bike.
In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bikes to work every day. In New York city, some bike riders even formed a group called Bike For A Better City. They claim (宣称) that if more people rode bike to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engineers.
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes – for bicycles only – on some of the streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lane as the car, there may be accidents. Bike For A Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bike lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea – they say if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And more people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park -- the largest open place in New York – is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by cars only. But Bike Foe A Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bike lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.

December 28, 1999 Monday Cloudy
This afternoon we had a PE lesson. Our teacher taught us how to practise the long jump. When the bell rang, we gathered on the playground. After warming-up exercise, the teacher told us about the way of long jump and showed us how to do it. Then we followed the teacher and practised one after another. Soon came my turn but I felt a little nervous. I failed the first time but I wasn't discouraged. I kept on practising. At last I could jump over three meters.
From this lesson I came to see that one will succeed if he has perseverance.
