Because of different instruments, materials and cultural background, Chinese paintings have their own image and content in comparison with other types of paintings. The unique appearance of Chinese Painting has much to do with the use of the Chinese writing brush and Chinese paper. There are four important things used in the creation of Chinese Painting, the brush, the paper, the ink, and the ink stone. Without any of them the job cannot be done.
The most important things that influence Chinese Painting are the painters’ personalities and the unique Chinese philosophy. The painters are trained not only to describe the things they see but also to express the mood and the spirit of the scenes. The Chinese also believe that a painting is an expression of the painter’s knowledge and character. In this way, Chinese Painting becomes something much more than art.
The most important philosophic belief in China is the Unity of Heaven, Earth and Human Beings. What the Chinese painters are trying to express is not what meets the eye, but their thoughts about the Great Nature. Chinese painters have great love and admiration for nature. It is part of their culture and religious practices.
When drawing, Chinese painters use circles and lines which can also be found in Chinese calligraphy (书法). Thus, most Chinese paintings are painted with the same movement, rhythm, and harmony that are used when people draw the forms of calligraphy. Calligraphy is a form of art that is highly honored.
Chinese painters may spend hours thinking and drawing inspiration (灵感) from the things in nature such as singing birds, the crickets (蟋蟀), and the mantises (螳螂). From these little or simple creatures that are chosen as __________________, we can see how much they enjoy nature and their love for common things.
The Chinese painters seldom draw a human figure by itself. Human beings are part of their surroundings. They are all together. That is why Chinese paintings are full of harmony, overall balance and peace.
