A young man returns to his hometown of Aracataca, Colombia. He visits the house where he lived as a child. Here, he remembers the most important memories of his childhood. Standing in front of his old house, the young man makes an important decision. He says to himself, “I will start my life over again. I will become a writer.”

This man is the world famous writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. 

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born on March 6, 1928. During his early life, Garcia Marquez’s grandmother and grandfather told him many stories. His grandmother would tell him legends as if they were real. Garcia Marquez says that his grandmother’s way of storytelling later influenced his own methods. 

When Garcia Marquez was about 20 years old, he left Aracataca and attended university in Bogota. He began studying law because this was what his father wanted him to study. However, Garcia Marquez was not happy. 

During this time Garcia Marquez returned to Aracataca. It was on this visit that he realized he must stop studying law. And he recognized that he must return to the dream of his childhood—writing. For the next few years, Garcia Marquez wrote for many different newspapers. And in 1955, he published his first book called Leaf Storm. 

For many years, Garcia Marquez knew he wanted to write about his grandfather’s house in Aracataca. To write this book, Garcia Marquez and his wife had to sell almost all of their possessions to survive. But their act was worth it. The book, One Hundred Years of Solitude was immediately successful. And this book created a path for Garcia Marquez’s future success. 

In 1982, Gabriel Garcia Marquez was given the Nobel Prize in Literature for his book One Hundred Years of Solitude, making him the first Colombian and the fourth Latin American to win a Nobel Prize in Literature.

A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor penguin that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to Antarctic, swimming for fish and playing on the ice floes(浮冰). But this penguin started swimming north and just kept going. 

The penguin attracted a lot of attention in New Zealand. It has been 40 years since an Emperor penguin was last seen there. Researchers at the Department of Conservation were called in. They decided to watch the penguin closely, but not to disturb it in any way. Many New Zealanders came to Peka Peka Beach to look at the elegant penguin. They were careful to keep their dogs away from it so it wouldn’t be frightened. 

The public nicknamed the animal Happy Feet. Researchers started to notice that Happy Feet didn’t seem well. It turns out that he had been eating the sand from the beach, likely thinking it was snow. 

The public raised more than 11,000 pounds for an operation to get the sand out of his stomach. The operation was a success, and Happy Feet was taken to a zoo in Wellington, N. Z. A group of experts met to decide how to help Happy Feet return to the wild. 

Last Sunday, they put him on a boat called the Tangaroa, in a specially built ice filled box and took him out into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand. There, they released him into the ocean, which is his natural habitat. He took one last look at his human helpers and then dived into the ocean. 

“Emperor penguins spend their first five years at sea，” said Peter Simpson of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. “What happens now is up to the penguin.” 

Happy Feet was fitted with a satellite transmitter(发射机) so they can monitor his progress using the Internet. So far, the trackers show that he swam northeast for a little while before getting his bearings and heading south.

My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live, when we saw an old worn-out dog stumbling(蹒跚) painfully up the road. We stopped, bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar with a phone number. I called but no one answered. 

The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food. Eventually we got her home. 

After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. She was very old and got lost that morning. So, Tara was safely returned home. 

Here is the truth of the story：

Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I wasn’t hearing anything that made that sound likely. 

I was about to turn and so when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it. 

We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family. 

In the song “Love Is Not a Fight” Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”
