A
I came across an old country guide the other day. It listed all the tradesmen in each village in my part of the country, and it was impressive to see the great variety of services which were available on one's own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside.
Nowadays a superficial(肤浅的)traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the citizens or selling antiques(古董) to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. Admittedly there has been a contraction(紧缩) of village commerce, but its vigor(活力) is still remarkable.
Our local grocer's shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the proprietor(经营者) knows well that personal service has a substantial cash value.
His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old age pensioner(领年金者) who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint(暗示) at a fancy for some commodity (日用品)outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red-faced figure, instantly obtains it for them.
The village gains from this sort of enterprise, of course. But I also find it satisfactory because a village shop offers one of the few ways in which a modest individualist can still get along in the world without attaching himself to the big battalions()of industry or commerce.
56. The services available in villages nowadays are normally
A. fewer but still very active
B. less successful than earlier but managing to survive
C. active in providing food for the village, and tourist goods
D. surprisingly energetic considering the little demand for them
57. The local grocer's shop is expanding _____.
A. because women spend a lot of their time there just gossiping
B. because town shops are larger and rather cheaper
C. in spite of the fact that people like to shop where they are less well-known
D. for people can get personal service in his shop
58. The writer implies that one disadvantage of town shops is that _____.
A. one has to queue up to pay in them B. their prices are higher
C. their staff may take less trouble to satisfy customers D. people cannot telephone them
59. How do the village grocer's assistants feel about giving extra service?
A. They tend to forget it. B. They will not consider it.
C. It does not seem worth their while. D. They take it for granted.
60. Another aspect of personal service in the village shop is that _____.
A. there is a very wide range of goods available in some shops
B. the service is convenient and shorcut
C. special attention is given to the needs of poor customers
D. goods are always restocked before they run out

Who is more stressed out----the Asian teenager or the American teenager? Surprisingly, the American teen wins this contest. According to a recent study, almost three-quarters of American high school juniors said they felt stress at least once a week, some almost daily. Fewer than half of Japanese and Taiwanese eleventh graders reported feeling stress that often.
The phenomenon of stress is the constant interaction between mind and body. And the influence of one upon the other can be either positive or negative. What can the mind do to the body? Studies have proved that watching funny movies can reduce pain and promote healing(治愈). On the contrary, worry can give a person an ulcer, high blood pressure, or even a heart attack.
The mind and body work together to produce stress, which is a bodily response to a stimulus(刺激), a response that disturbs the body’s normal physiological balance. However, stress is not always bad. For example, a stress reaction can sometimes save a person’s life by releasing hormones (荷尔蒙)that enable a person to act quickly and with greater energy in a dangerous situation. In everyday situations, too, stress can provide that extra push needed to do something difficult. But too much stress often injures both the mind and the body. How can stress be kept under control? Learn to Lighten Up and Live Longer, the best seller of the month, has several good suggestions. So, grab a copy and start learning how you can reduce stress in your life.
61. What’s the writer’s main purpose for writing this passage?
A.To find who are the most stressed out teenagers. B. To explain that stress is a mental problem.
C. To inform the reader how to reduce stress. D. To promote a book about reducing stress.

C. Avoiding difficult things successfully D. Reacting quickly in risky situations
. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Taiwanese teenagers experience more stress than American teenagers.
B. Stress is a state too complicated (复杂的)to be kept under full control.
C. Learn to Lighten Up and Live Longer is a popular book.

Money Matters for Students
GETTING A GRANT(补助)
Who pays?
The local education authority (LEA) for the area in which the student is living.
Who can get this money?
Anyone who gets a place in a first degree course, although a student who has already attended(已修过) a course of advanced further education may not. Students must also have been resident in the UK for at least three years, which can exclude(排除) some students from overseas.
SPECIAL CASES
If a student has worked before going to college:
A student who is 26 or more before the course starts and who has worked for at least three of the previous six years will get extra money------£155 a year if 26, increasing to a maximum(最多的) of £615 at 29 or more.
If a student is handicapped(残疾的):
LEA will give up to £500 to help meet extra expenses------such as buying a tape recorder for a blind student, extra heating or special food.
Banking:
Most of the big banks offer special services to the students who open accounts ( in the hope that they will stay with the bank when they become rich officials). A student won’t usually have to pay bank charges as long as the account stays in credit. Some banks allow students to overdraw (透支) by £100 or so, and still don’t make charges (thought they do charge interest).
65. A student from Japan who has been staying in England for a year and intends to go to college in a few months will ________.

B. Because they charge students extra.

IV.任务型阅读(共10小题,满分10分)
Directions: Using the information in the passage, complete the table below. One word for each answer.
Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in great danger.
Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by human such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
Rhinos(犀牛)
The Rhino horn is a highly priced item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves. Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant hunting from poachers.
The Giant Panda
The future of the Giant Panda is far from certain. As far as 1,000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals. However, the panda’s black and white patched coat fetches(售出)a high price on the black market and determined poachers(偷猎者) still perform one of the most serious threats to the animal’s continued existence.
Whales
Despite the fact that one-third of the world’s oceans have been declared whale reserves, 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300. Striking against ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.
Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tiger’s bones and organs are sought after for traditional medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.
