A
The Edinburgh(爱丁堡)international film festival, after 60 years as one of the city's cultural focus in August, will move to June from next year. Artistic director Hannah McGill said the festival needed more breathing space.
“There are huge advantages to having all these cultural events in one place and time,” she said. “But there is limited space. It's_like_when_a_child_has_a_birthday on_Christmas_Day—it all_comes_on_top_of_each_other.”_
Ms McGill said that the film festival wanted to use extra places to organize events and conferences which Edinburgh is too crowded to provide in August. She spoke of her difficulty, for example, at being unable to hold an exhibition as part of the film festival because of limited space.
However, Jon Morgan, director of the Edinburgh Fringe festival, deprecated the film festival's move which suggested the city was overburdened in August. “There are still hundreds of spaces that aren't used, and there is still room for it to expand,” he said.
The move to June made sense. It would allow more air between it and the London film festival, providing for more distinctive(有特色的) programming. “June will give us the breathing space to expand and create our own identity, allowing us to further develop our position as one of the world's most innovative(创新的)and challenging annual film events,” she said.
The festival organisers thought that the move to June would not reduce audience, saying filmlovers would visit Edinburgh in early summer. Ginnie Atkinson, the festival's managing director, said: “ Our audience is very filmfocused. Last year we asked in our market research whether they would come if we were the only show in town and they said yes.”
56.The passage intends to tell us that Edinburgh international film festival ________.
A.needs improving
B.enjoys great success
C.needs more breathing space
D.will move to “quieter” June

A.having two important events in one place and time has many advantages
B.having two important events in one place and time will cause pressure
C.wonderful things always go hand in hand
D.having a birthday on Christmas Day is a lucky thing
58.Which of the following is NOT TURE according to the passage?
A.The Edinburgh international film festival is held every other year.
B.Jon Morgan thought there was still room for Edinburgh to expand.
C.The move can allow Edinburgh to further improve international fame.
D.this change won't reduce the audiences.
59.The underlined phrase “deprecated” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A.disagreed to B.approved of
C.supported D.held
由However和“There are still hundreds of spaces that aren't used, and there is still room for it to expand,he said.”
60.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.the move to June will affect the number of people who visit Edinburgh
B.the festival is one of the world's most innovative and challenging and film events
C.the festival has been one of Edinburgh 's cultural focuses for 60 years
D.It is generally believed that August is a busy month to the cultural circles in Edinburgh
B
People turn to magic(魔力)chiefly as a form of insurance—that is, they use it along with actions that actually bring results. For example, hunters may use a hunting charm(咒语). But they also use their hunting skills and knowledge of animals. The charm may give hunters the extra confidence they need to hunt even more successfully than they would without it. If they shoot a lot of game(猎物), they credit the charm for their success. Many events happen naturally without magic. Crops grow without it, and sick people get well without it. But if people use magic to bring a good harvest or to cure a patient, they may believe the magic was responsible.
People also tend to forget magic's failures and to be impressed by its surface successes. They may consider magic successful if it appears to work only 10 per cent of the time. Even when magic fails, people often explain the failure without doubting the power of the magic. They may say that the magician made a mistake in reciting the spell or that another magician cast a more powerful spell against the magician.
Many anthropologists(人类学家) believe that people have faith in magic because they feel a need to believe in it. People may turn to magic to reduce their fear and uncertainty if they feel they have no control over the outcome of a situation. For example, farmers use knowledge and skill when they plant their fields. But they know that weather, insects, or diseases might ruin the crops. So farmers in some societies may also plant a charm or perform a magic rite to ensure a good harvest.
61.From the passage, we can learn that the writer of the passage may be ________.
A.a hunter B.a farmer
C.a magician D.an anthropologist

A.Magic And Hunting.
B.Magic And Farming.

63.The underlined word “spell”(Paragraph 2) most likely means________.
A.magic words B.magic events
C.words or expressions D.magicians

.People believe in magic because ________.
A.magic powers are greater than natural powers
B.magic can turn dreams into reality
C.they are not sure of themselves
D.magic can bring good results
65.Which of the following statements is NOT ture according to the passage?
A.Even though magic fails ,believers in magic will explain the reason.
B.Believers in magic usually overstate the power of magic.
C.People use magic to reduce their uncertainty and give them extra confidence.
D.Magic can solve problems people can't deal with in a natural way.
C

D
It was Thanksgiving morning . I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my wornout slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job ? these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.
71.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Lady, are you rich?
B.A story of Thanksgiving Day.
C.Don't forget how much you are rich.
D.Do cups and saucers match well?
小男孩的问话 “Lady, are you rich?” 和小女孩的话 “Your cups match your saucers”引起了作者对富裕的深刻思考, 改变了她原先对幸福的片面认识,因此用Lady, are you rich?
72.The writer let the two children come in and served them well because ________.
A.she wanted to sell old papers to them
B.she wanted to invite them to her thankgiving party
C.she showed great pity and care on them
D.she had the same experience as them in the past
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.

B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive.
C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.
D.After hearing what they said, the writer seemed to understand what a rich life was.
74.The writer left the muddy marks of little sandals on the floor for a while to ________.

In a classroom in any country, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches what is known as the “hidden course”— the culture of that country.
In a society such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they highly value individualism Their education, as a part of the society, also values this greatly. Teachers try to make each student special. Students do not have to memorize a lot of information, instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer and not simply to get the correct answer.
In most Asian countries, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the education there shows society's value in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules of information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.
In many ways these differences come from different educational psychology (心理学). In Western countries teachers are taught to nurture (培养) students. They make it easier for the students to learn for themselves. In the Orient,_however, teachers often feel that their task is to pass knowledge to students, or the students can't learn anything.

79.In what way do teachers in Western countries teach students differently from the teachers in the Orient? (within 20 words)
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

Recently, a website organized a questionnaire survey about why people go to university. According to the survey, we know that different students have different ideas.
Fifteen percent of the students go to university in order to help their parents and relatives live a happy life. One fifth of them go to university to earn more money and buy a house. Only five percent of the students are for the purpose of realizing their selfdevelopment.
Naturally some students have other opinions. But I agree with those students who go to university in order to improve themselves and with those who want to find a good job. Finally, no matter who we are, we must do as the students do who show their sense of responsibility to our country and society.
