Beautiful Lake Charles State Park runs along the western shores of Lake Charles. It is at the base of the Ozark Mountains. The lake has many kinds of fish. People who visit the park enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking, boating, swimming, and fishing. The park became part of the Arkansas State Parks system in 1963. What to Do at the Park

Camping and Picnicking There are 61 campsites. They are placed all around the lake, among the trees. Every site has electricity and running water. Bathrooms are only a short walk from each camp. Near the swim beach is a large picnic area. In the picnic area, children can have fun in a playground with swings, slides, and other fun equipment there.

Trails The park has three lovely walking trails: Cedar Trail, White Oak Trail, and the Blooms and Butterflies Trail. Cedar Trail is a paved trail that stretches over 1/4 miles.

White Oak Trail makes a loop around the lake. This loop is a more difficult hike than Cedar Trail. White Oak Trail branches off (分支) from the Butterflies and Blooms Trail.

The Butterflies and Blooms Trail starts at the Visitor’s Center. Can you guess what you will see on this trail? You’re right! You will see wildflowers and wildlife, including birds and butterflies.

Fishing, Swimming, and Boating The Lake Charles covers 5 acres and contains large numbers of fish. Can you guess what kinds of fish you might catch? We 66 the first part without problems. Then it started to snow and the rocks became slippery. All of a sudden, as I was helping my brother down a huge rock, he slipped and fell into a pool. Unfortunately, he had landed on a rock just below the surface and his leg broke. I climbed down and 67 pulled him out of the water. Night was coming and the temperature was falling but my brother couldn’t move. Feeling helpless, I decided to head for the 68 camp for help, so I left James with some warm clothing and the rest of the food. It had been raining and to my horror, I discovered that the canyon was flooded. But I had no choice, I had to struggle on, soaked and freezing, unable even to think clearly. At one point I got lost, wasting precious hours.

At two-thirty the following afternoon, I finally arrived at the camp. The 69 had taken twenty-two hours and I was exhausted and starving. Impatient people are often seen as proud and self-important. Being impatient can affect your relationships at work and at home negatively (有害地). People will sense anger from you and not like d 71 with you if you are impatient. They might even come to avoid you completely. Impatient people are often seen as making quick decisions as they don’t let people c ommunicate fully or find out all the facts first. When you notice you are impatient, you can find some ways to overcome them. Here are two ways that may help you.

Because impatient people are often b 72 and hate to waste time, they sometimes don’t leave extra time for small mistakes. This means that, if they need to be somewhere, they are always doing other tasks t 73 the last minute. They don’t leave extra time in case a bus is late, t hey can’t find their car keys or some other p 74 appear. When you need to get somewhere, especially if it is somewhere important, give yourself some extra time. If you arrive early, you can relax or do something then.

Be prepared. If being hungry gets you impatient, keep a health bar with you at all times. If you hate sitting around waiting, see to some business on your phone or keep a book to read handy at all times. If you know that you might be s 75 in traffic or wait at the airport, think about what you might need to pass the time. A game might be helpful or even something as s 76 as a pen and paper to write a letter.

Sometimes patience is about changing our attitude to our place in the world. Don’t believe that your time is more important than a 77 else’s. You can learn to control the emotions you feel when you are impatient and so become a person who is both easier to get on with and enjoys life more.

D. Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题) (12分)

A few months ago, I interviewed Max, an animal trainer. He was teaching a dolphin to do a back flip. Every time the dolphin jumped out of the water, even a little, Max would reward it with some food. When the dolphin did something else, Max would just ignore it. At first the dolphin kept swimming round the pool and having fun. But slowly, it learned that when it jumped, it got a reward. After a few days the dolphin was jumping high enough to do a somersault (空翻). It had learned the first part of the trick.

I was fascinated. I kept thinking about how Max had trained that dolphin … and then I began to wonder if the same skills might work with my husband, Dylan. He was always leaving dirty washing on the floor and he often used to forget arrangements that we’d made. I nagged (埋怨) him but he ignored me. The piles of washing just got bigger and he would forget even more arrangements. His bad habits didn’t use to trouble me but now they were driving me mad!

So I decided to copy the dolphin trainer. I praised Dylan when he put anything in the washing basket,

even if it was just one sock or when he remembered any arrangement, even if he got the wrong day. Slowly, the piles of dirty washing became smaller and his memory got better. I was so pleased that I told Dylan about my ‘training’. He looked thoughtful.

A few days later my computer didn’t work again. It was continuously crashing and I called Dylan in a panic. The first thing he said was, ‘Well done, Jenny, you haven’t made a drama out of this. You used to shout at me’. Suddenly, I felt calm. I liked his praise. Then I realized what was happening. He 83

Huge mistake! He said if I bought an expensive one, I’d save money because it would last longer. That sounded sensible. He showed me a mid-range phone. ‘It can play mp3s,’ said Kevin, ‘so you’ll never be bored on long trips again.’I don’t make long trips but still, I was tricked! I nearly bought it. Then Kevin showed me a top-of-the-range phone. ‘All the smart people are buying this,’ he said. I surely wanted to be smart. Kevin showed me its attractive features. Within no time at all I’d bought it. When I told my mum, she didn’t support what I did. I quickly realiz ed that I shouldn’t have bought such an expensive phone. D. Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences. (听短文,完成下列内容。每空格限填一词)

Gever is a computer scientist from California. In 2005, he started a programme for children called Tinkering School. The programme aims that children can learn important skills for life by building things together. At Tinkering School, children get all kinds of materials and real tools. Some children have cut themselves when using a knife, or hurt their fingers when using hammer. Tinkering School has been around for many years now, but nobody has ever suffered a serious injury in all those years. This is because there are

初三英语试卷共7页第8页strict health and safety rules they must follow. The children always learn how to use the tools safely and they must wear the right clothes and protection at all times. In 2011, Gever decided to create a ‘real’ school called Brightworks. The school is very small---it only has 20 students aged 6 to 13. Since it started, Brightworks has been written about a lot. Most articles have praised the quality of the school. However, there have also been critical voices. Some people have said that children are not learning enough at Brightworks. They feel that students are just ‘playing around’ all the time. Later we interviewed 12-year-old Tina who had been a student since last October. She said, “I t’s been a very exciting experience, and there hasn’t b een one single moment when I found it boring.”
