Holidays and Festivals in China
China is populated by national minorities, who also have their own specific holidays. Among them are "Water Festival" among the Mongols, the harvest festival "Van go" among the Tibetans, Nauru among the Huygens, and many others. However, they are of local nature rather than public one.In addition, all holidays in China are divided into traditional and nationwide part. China's traditional festivals are celebrated by the Lunar Calendar. The national and borrowed holidays are observed by the Gregorian calendar.
The Chinese consider the holidays to be their cultural heritage, so they are very serious about the preparation for them. Many festivals such as New Year’s Day, Labor Day and National Day last for several days and are a grand performance for the country's inhabitants and tourists.
Spring festival lasting 15 days, from 1st of January till 15th of January on the lunar calendar, is considered as the most important festival of the whole year for the Chinese people and is the moment when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the west. No matter how far people live, they desire to go back home and enjoy the happiest time with family. There is no denying that it will be the busiest time for transportation systems every year.
May day, or Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers, which occurs on the first day of May. The history of International Workers' Day in China started in 1919, when the intelligentsia initiated insurgencies in Shanghai. Later, in 1920, Beijing and Shanghai held the first-ever demonstration in honor of all workers. Officially, this holiday was established and approved by the Chinese government in 1949. During the “cultural revolution” May Day in China was considered, almost the most important holiday in the country. Today, Labor Day in China is a sort of a cheerful family holiday. During these seven days of holidays, the Chinese go on a journey, meet friends, and attend solemn events. Many people visit theaters and exhibitions. The streets of the Chinese cities hold demonstrations and performances as well. May Day holidays is the best time to visit China, because at this period of year, the government gives permission for discounts. Not only can you visit the main attractions of the country at discounted prices, but also The State Council has approved a plan to lift road tolls for passengers driving cars on the highways during major Chinese Festivals.
Dragon Boast Festival, on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first. The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating rice dumplings.
The Double Seventh Festival, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar. This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. On each bank of it is a bright star, which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid, and about them there is a beautiful love story passed down from generation to generation. Long, long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Cowhand. His parents died when he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Weaver Maid fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cow hand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back.
However, nowadays, a lot of youngsters gradually lose the interest of traditional culture. What exactly contribute to this phenomenon? For one thing, quite a few people hold that Chinese traditional culture is out-dated and of little use in modern society. Perhaps, from their perspective, traditional culture from the distant past can hardly adapt to or keep pace with the fast-changing new world. But no one can deny the significance of Chinese traditional culture. It is the crystallization of Chinese wisdom and civilization. An individual or nation showing no respect to the essence of traditional culture cannot be expected to develop and be stronger. Hence, something could and should be done to reverse the inexorable decline in the emphasis of Chinese traditional culture.
