For years, Japan has been on the cutting edge of fashion and technology. Now, some young people are embracing(拥抱)an industry that’s faded into the pasts: agriculture.
Japan, which has the second-largest economy in the world, imports 60 percent of its food. Young Japanese fear that an over-reliance(过度依赖)on imports could make things very difficult for future generations. So some are trying to do something to ensure(确保)themselves and their children a better future.
“No matter how big Japan’s economy is, no matter how much cash it stacks(堆成一堆)up, this country will soon be unable to buy so much food from overseas,” 31-year-old Yusuke Miyaji, the leader of a social group for young farmers, told the Telegraph newspaper. “Kids should dream of becoming farmers, not baseball players!”
To be sure, this movement is just in its infancy(幼年期). And it’s not all about self-sacrifice. Kaori Nukui, 31, sees a real opportunity to make money. She recently quit her job in the city to help her parents grow green tea and mushrooms. “My mother wanted me to marry a businessman rather than work the land,” she said. “But when I thought of starting a business myself, I realized my parents had already built a good foundation(基础)for me.”

US President Barack Obama traveled to Oslo, Norway, to accept his Nobel Prize and give a speech about peace. But in skipping and canceling some of his scheduled appearances at the Nobel festivities, he unintentionally offended many Scandinavians.
Most Nobel winners, for instance, sit for a lunch with the Norwegian King Harald V. Obama skipped it. Winners are also asked to take part in a press conference, enjoy a concert, and appear at a children’s event. Obama also reportedly passed up on these events.
“In Norwegian culture, it’s very important to keep an agreement,” Norwegian public-relations expert Rune Morck-Wergeland told TheDailyBeast.com website. “We’re religious about that, and Obama’s actions have been clumsy. You just don’t say no to an invitation from a European king. Maybe Obama’s advisers are not very educated about European culture, but he’s coming off as rude, even if he doesn’t mean to.”
A headline in the Norwegian daily Aftenposten called Obama “a bit arrogant(傲慢的)—a bit bad”. The daily tabloid VG reported that 44 percent of Norwegians polled considered Obama’s skipping lunch with the king “rude”, though 34 percent said it was acceptable.
The Nobel Prize committee, meanwhile, cut Obama some slack. He is, after all, a sitting president with two wars and an economic recession(经济衰退)to worry about. “We always knew that there were too many events in the program,” Geir Lundestad, secretary of the committee, told the Guardian. “Obama has to govern the US and we were told early on that he could not commit to all of them.”

“Growing Pains” was on television from 1985 to 1992. This was a total of seven years, and it told over one hundred and sixty different stories. During its history, the show had seven producers and over forty writers.
The program was about a family of six who lived on Long Island near New York. Their parents were a working couple. The father was a doctor and the mother was a journalist. They had four children. The oldest child was Mike. He was the major reason for the program’s huge success. Mike kept making trouble but was always charming.
From the first few episodes of “Growing Pains” Mike was always getting into trouble. He was caught by the police for driving a car too fast. He told his parents that he would never ride a motorbike but then hurt himself riding one. But in the last series he helped a young boy who had no home and asked his family to help him care for and support the boy. Though breaking his promise disappointed his parents, the way he cared for this boy made them proud to have him as their son. These stories are good examples of the two sides of Mike’s nature. He was naughty but also a caring and warm person. He quickly became very popular. His face was in every teen magazine and teenage girls bought thousands of photos and posters of him to decorate their bedroom wall.
Perhaps another reason why the program was popular in America is that most of its stories were about ordinary family problems. Many of the people watching the program had the same problems. Like Mike’s parents, many parents who work often worry about their children and have difficult decisions to make about them.
Even now the show still appears on American TV sometimes. It was shown in other countries too, so it has now been enjoyed by people all over the world. What a great show!
