Founded in 1952, Harbin Commercial University was the first multidisciplinary commercial university in China, started undergraduate education from 1958 and postgraduate education from 1982 with the approval of Ministry of Education, and is one of ten key construction universities of Heilongjiang Province. Harbin Commercial University obtained excellent prize in Assessment of Work Level of Undergraduate Teaching in Colleges and Universities by Ministry of Education in 2006. 

       Located in City of Harbin, a famous city in the north, the university is divided into a south campus and a north campus, wherein the south campus is located in Tongda Street No. 138, Daoli District, Harbin City, the north campus is located in Xuehai Street No.1, Songbei District, Harbin City. The total occupied area of the university is 1,131,700 square meters, and the total area of schoolhouses is 600,300 square meters. 

       The university is provided with twenty collages, one teaching department, two arts and science academes (thirty-three research institutes and research centers), and forty-eight undergraduate specialties at present, which belong to eight discipline fields such as economics, management science, engineering science, law, literature, neo-Confucianism, medical science, pedagogy and the like. Second bachelor degree specialties such as business administration, marketing management, international economics and trade, computer science and technology, and the like are further arranged. 

       The university is a unit with doctor and master’s degree conferral rights which is sanctified by State Council Academic Degree Committee with three doctoral programs of traditional Chinese pharmacology (first level discipline), industrial economics and food science, two post-doctoral scientific research stations (Institute of Pharmacology and Northeast Asian Service Outsourcing Research Center), five first level discipline master degree programs, 33 second level discipline master degree programs and one professional degree master degree program (MBA). The university is provided with one natural anti-cancer drug engineering research center of Ministry of Education, five national characteristic specialties of pharmaceutical engineering, food science and engineering, machine design manufacture and automation, commodity science and accounting, two key provincial laboratories (food science and engineering, and antitumor drug, one experiment teaching model center at the state level (Economic Management comprehensive practice center), two experiment teaching model centers at the provincial level, ten provincial major courses of tertiary industry development and innovation, industrial economics, food science, traditional Chinese pharmacology, enterprise management, accounting, finance, international trade theory, mechanical design and theory (agro-processing technology and equipment) and management science and engineering (logistics and supply chain management), and ten provincial key specialties of tourism management, commodity science, accounting, business administration, machine design manufacture and automation, finance, economics, pharmaceutical engineering, food science and engineering and packaging engineering. The university also has one philosophy and social science key research base (Finance and Tax research base) and a humanistic key research base of Education Department of Heilongjiang Province (Market and Circulation Economy Research Center). 

       The university has 1550 college staff at present and 1258 professional teachers which include 141 professors and 301 associate professors. The university has 21 experts who receive government special allowance distributed by Department of State, two experts who receive provincial government special allowance, 17 provincial (ministerial) outstanding contribution experts, two chair professors of ‘Heilongjiang Scholars’, 13 provincial academic leaders, 15 doctoral supervisors and 5 provincial master teachers. The university retains social well known experts, scholars and enterprisers as part-time professors, retains foreign experts from Britain, Japan and Russia perennially, and is one of universities which are granted by the state to accept foreign students. 

       At present, school graduate students, undergraduate students and junior college students are more than 22000. The university has trained more than 80 thousands various professional personnel totally for the society during 57 years from the establishment of the university, wherein many students have become famous experts and scholars, successful enterprisers and excellent party and administration cadres, and are popular by employing units. 

       From the establishment of the university, scientific research obtained rich achievements. The first dumpling machine was developed in 1950s, which made contribution to Chinese fast food and industrialization, ‘Property Collection and Paying Accounting Method’, one of three accounting bookkeeping methods in China was firstly created in 1960s and was an accounting bookkeeping method which was used in new China for 30 years and was applied in all industries, and academic theory of Northeast Asian Economic Circle Collaborative Development was put forward in 1980s most early and laid theoretical foundation for developing Northeast Asian Economic Circle. The first Monetary and Financial Museum in all universities in China was built in 1990s and introduced a batch of influential scientific research achievements, ‘Commercial Automation Technology Integration and Demonstration Project’ which was finished in late 1990s filled up commercial automation research blank in China and obtained a first-grade of Scientific and Technological Progress Prize of National Trade Bureau. In recent years, the university had gotten prominent research achievements on the aspects such as law and economics inter-discipline, modern circulation theory, development of northeast old industrial base, antitumor drug, green food strategic management, food research and development, and the like, and made great contribution to regional economy and industry development. In recent five years, the university undertook 110 projects such as national natural science foundation projects, national philosophy and social science foundation projects, national key research projects of Ministry of Science and Technology, projects of Ministry of Education and the like. Scientific research achievements successively obtained 156 rewards above the provincial or ministerial levels.357 monograph and teaching materials were published, including 207 monographs. 4639 papers were published. 

       Journals which are edited and published openly by the university comprise three academic journals of Commercial Research, Journal of Harbin Commercial University (Natural Science Edition), and Journal of Harbin Commercial University (Social Science Edition), wherein Commercial Research is a national Chinese core journal. 

       The university built cooperation and exchange relationship with 26 universities in countries and regions such as Britain, America, Canada, Australia, Russia, Korea, Japan and the like, developed undergraduate 2+2 co-culture with Leeds University, Napier University and Thames Valley University of Britain, and developed scientific research cooperation with Novosibirsk State Technical University, Pacific State Economical University, and Khabarovsk Academy of Economics and Law of Russia, Ocean University of Japan, Chubu University and Youngsan University of Korea, and the like.
