It is inevitable for us to meet failure and success in everyday life. Most of us are eager for success and scared of failure. However, no one is always successful 48 also no one is always a failure. Then 49 to deal with failure and success in our life?
On the one hand, “failure is the mother of success”. If we sum 50 experiences and lessons after failure, maybe success will come. Nevertheless, if we lose our hearts and give up former efforts, we will 51 succeed. In a word, the key to success is our hard struggle. On the other hand, success may cause failure, too. Generally speaking, success often adds confidence and satisfaction, 52 failure companies with misery and sadness. But supposing 53 become self-satisfied once we succeed and stop struggling, then it’s sure that failure will come. We should take 54 right attitude towards failure and success.
In a word, there is not an absolute limit between success and failure. 55 is important is our struggle and attitude.
Part Reading Comprehension (30 marks)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B,C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information.
A
Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled--- to $1.01 per pack---smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit.
This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect of state tax increase for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.
The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.
In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light King cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. Charleston , S,C , where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation. The price is $4.78.
The influence is obvious.
In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys---13.8%, far below the nation average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.
Hal Rogers, representatives from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “ who choose to smoke”.
That’s true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low—income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
56. The passage is mainly about __________
A. the price of cigarettes B. the rate of teen smoking
C. the effect of tobacco tax increase D. the differences in tobacco tax rate
57. What does the author think is a surprise?
A. Teen smokers are price sensitive.
B. Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.
C. Tobacco taxes improve public health.
D. Tobacco industry fiercely fights the tax rise.
58. The underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 3 most probably means_________.
A. discard B. remove C. benefit D. free.
59. Rogers’ attitude towards the low- income smokers might be that of ________.
A. tolerance B. unconcern C. doubt D. sympathy
60. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.
B. Low—income Americans are more likely to fall ill.
C. Future generations will be hooked on smoking.
D. Adults will depend more on their families.

For 365 days, Christina Dean has decided to only wear second-hand clothes. In that way, she hopes to promote environmental sustainability( 可持续发展) in the fashion industry.
The woman, The founder of ReDress, is wearing “100% dumped(废弃的) and donated second-hand clothes.” for the whole year of 2013, with the exception of her underwear and shoes.
Ms Dean said it was after she witnessed first hand some of the estimated 217 tons of textile waste, being thrown into landfills every day, that she needed to take action.” I realized that the environmental gains made by the fashion industry’s sustainablilty initiatives(积极性) become lost, when faced with this case of the waste,” she explained, In the UK, almost 10,000 pieces of clothes were dumped into landfill every five minutes.”

Clothes are poorly made, badly cared for, ripped, even broken.” she explained. “But within this sorry wastage are incredible clothes, and some of them are well-known brands, high-quality materials, brand new or homemade. “I’ve worn them throughout this year.” Some dresses were found “perfectly clean” in a recycling bin, and some simply needed a wash. The shirts appear brand new, once they are ironed.

It was the summer of 1965. DeLuca, then 17, visited Peter Buck, a family friend. Buck asked DeLuca about his plans for the future. “I’m going to college, but I need a way to pay for it,” DeLuca recalls saying. “Buck said ‘you should open a sandwich shop.’”
That afternoon, they agreed to be partners. And they set a goal: to open 32 stores in ten years. After doing some research, Buck wrote a check for $1,000. DeLuca rented a storefront(店面) in Connecticut, and when they couldn’t cover their start-up costs, Buck kicked in another $1,000.
But business didn’t go smoothly as they expected. DeLuca says, “After six months, we were doing poorly, but we didn’t know how badly, because we didn’t have any financial controls.” All he and Buck knew was that their sales were lower than their costs.
DeLuca was managing the store and going to the University of Bridgeport at the same time. Buck was working at his day job as a nuclear physicist in New York. They’d meet Monday evenings and brainstorm ideas for keeping the business running. “We convinced ourselves to open a second store. We figured we could tell the public. ‘We are so successful, we are opening a second store.’” And they did –in the spring of 1966. Still, it was a lot of learning by trial and error.
But the partners ‘learn-as-you-go’ approach turned out to be their greatest strength. Every Friday, DeLuca would drive around and hand-deliver the checks to pay their suppliers. “It probably took me two and a half hours and it wasn’t necessary, but as a result, the suppliers got to know me very well, and the personal relationships established really helped out.” DeLuca says.

Like our body, our memory needs regular exercise to be in good condition. Like the sportsman who must train to allow the body to respond to difficult times, the memory needs its own special training in order to stay in “shape” and improve.
There are many factors that can cause poor memory like insomnia (失眠), depression and alcohol. However, there are simple ways which you can follow to keep your memory in shape and actually help you to improve your memory’s condition and performance.
Never stop learning. Look for topics that interest you and really get involved in learning new information about them. Reading and attending lectures or programs are sources of continuous education of your brain with beneficial results to your memory.
Develop your social and family relationships. The more social you are, the better it is for your brain. Studies have shown that the brain and heart have a lot to gain from good family and social relationships.
Exercise your mind with games. The more you use your brain, the more you help your memory stay in shape. There are many games that can make you an intelligent person as well as entertain you such as chess, puzzles and board games.
Exercise physically can improve your memory. This type of exercise improves the circulatory (血液循环的) system. Even the simple but regular daily exercise such as fast walking can improve the heart and oxygenation(供氧) of the brain. The benefits of exercise affect positively many body systems, as well as our memory and other cognitive(认知的) capabilities.
Eat more fruit and vegetables. What we eat every day affects the performance and long-term condition of our memory. Fruit and vegetables contain a lot of antioxidants(抗氧化剂) and vitamins that can help and benefit the nervous system.
So our memory is like a sportsman. The more we practice our brains and memory, the better their performance will be.

Section B(10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
Ninety-five percent of people never succeed because they’re following the wrong group.
A French scientist once made an experiment with caterpillars (毛虫) looking for food. He led a group of caterpillars onto the edge of a large flowerpot so that the leader of the group found itself nose to tail with the last caterpillar, forming a circle without end or beginning. Out of habit, the ring of the caterpillars circled the flowerpot for seven days and seven nights until they died of starvation. In fact, plenty of food was close at hand, but it was outside the range of the circle, so the caterpillars continued along the wrong path.
People often behave in the same way. For example, if someone shouts, “Fire!” many people will follow the crowd blindly and many thousands have died because of it. How many stop to ask themselves: Is this really the best way out of here?
Most people follow the crowd because it seems easier to follow the mainstream than to deal with change on their own even when that change may represent freedom, achievement and success. A hard thing for them to fully understand is that people in such numbers can be wrong. People thought the earth was flat and later it was believed that the sun, stars and planets travelled around the earth. Both ideas are now considered ridiculous, but at the time they were believed by the majority of followers.
It’s a good idea to step out of the line every once in a while and look around to see if the line is going where they want it to go. Success only favors those who think outside the box.
81. How long did the caterpillar circle the flowerpot? (within 6 words)( 2 marks)
82. Why couldn’t the caterpillar find the food ever when it was close at hand? (within 10 words) ( 2 marks)

May I have your attention, please?
My topic today is about copying others’ homework. As we know, some students copy others’ homework. On one hand, we students have to do masses of homework both at home and at school . Sometimes we do have some problems, too hard to work out. On the other hand, lazy and uninterested in their lesson, some students copy others’ homework not only to finish the assignments but also to please their teachers.
In a word, copying others’ homework is a bad habit. For one thing, it’s against the school rules. Being students, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to teachers and classmates for help. For another, copying others’ homework too often, we will lose the ability that can help us to think.
Personally, it’s for our own sake to study. We should try our best to gain knowledge. Let’s take action to prevent such bad behavior from spreading.
Thank you for your attention.
