Almost every day, we use a computer to search information, send e-mails and play video games. But everything would not go so well without its friend: a small, clickable mouse.
In 1968, US inventor Douglas Engelbart showed a cute device (设备) to the public. It was a small wooden box with two metal wheels to roll back and forth. On top of it, there was a small red button that you could click. The device was connected to the computer with a cable (线) that looked like a “tail”. That’s how it got its name “mouse”. This was the first mouse that could fit into a user’s hand.
Engelbart wanted computers to be more user-friendly. And he certainly succeeded. The coming of the mouse changed the way in which humans interact with computers. Instead of typing commands (指令) with a keyboard, users can now operate faster with a mouse.
But the mouse didn’t become popular until more than 10 years later. Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs revealed (展示) Apple’s Lisa computers accompanied with a mouse during the early 1980s. Since then, the mouse has been created in many shapes, sizes and colors, but all based on the basic idea of Engelbart’s design.
Although now slowly being overtaken by touchpads (触摸板) and touch-sensitive screens, the mouse and the idea behind it, remain an important feature of all modern computers.

An African proverb says that a single hand cannot tie a bundle. Everyone needs friends to help them sail through the rough seas of life. Even the strongest and richest person still needs friends. Our money and strength would have no value if we had no friends to share with us. The best friendship is a give-and-take relationship. We need the support of our family, friends and the community. In turn we also give support to the society, our friends and our family.
The word “friend” has many meanings. It could be the bus driver who takes you to and from work every day. It could be a parent, a wife or husband, a brother or sister, or even the unknown person who helped you just once when you could not find your way. Real friends share not only our happiness but our sadness as well. This may explain why we have the expression “a friend in need is a friend indeed”.
Friendship is like the sunshine that keeps us warm. It is like the refreshing raindrops on the fields that give the farmers hope of a good planting season. Without friends our life would be like a desert where our only friend would be loneliness and sadness. The most lucky person is the one who has friends from all levels in the society. A driver might find friends not only among the other drivers but among farmers, bankers, students or teachers. We should never forget our old friends when we make new ones. We should treasure each of our friends whether poor or rich, beautiful or not. Each friend is unique in his or her own way. And all together, they enrich life and make it very colorful.
61. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. How to sail through the sea of life. B. Friends and friendship.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Never forget old friends when making new ones.
62. What is the correct understanding of friends according to the writer?
A. Friends can be different people around us.
B. Friends will take us through rough seas.
C. Friends never expect anything from others.
D. Friends who share our happiness are not real friends.
63. An unknown person can be a friend as well when___________.
A. he helps you with what you need
B. he is told how to find his way
C. he becomes one of your family
D. he is a driver taking you from and to work
. The underlined word “unique” in the last paragraph most probably means “ _______”.
A. familiar B. regular C. special D. realistic
65. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. We need to help our friends because it is our duty to support others.
B. Best friends need to share only their sadness and discomforts.
C. We make friends with farmers because they’re like the sunshine to keep us warm.
D. We should forget the old friends when making new ones.

Few people have been as respected as former South African president Nelson Mandela.
Mandela was born into an African royal (皇室的) family on July 18, 1918. His great-grandfather was a king and his father was a clan chief (部落酋长).But Mandela chose a life path of revolution () instead of royalty.
At that time, South Africa was ruled by racism (种族主义). In 1948, the government passed a law that stopped black people from living or traveling where they wanted. Black people didn’t have the right to vote, either. Mandela didn’t think that was right. He organized many campaigns against it. Because of this, in 1962, he was arrested. He spent 27 years in prison.
After he was set free in 1990, he chose to forgive his enemies. He shook hands with the people who wanted him dead.
“You can’t build a united nation on the basis of revenge (复仇),” said Mandela. He also encouraged black people to forgive whites.
His efforts won himself the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and a year later, for the first time in South Africa’s history, black people stood in line with whites to vote. Mandela, at the age of 75, became the first black president of South Africa.
Mandela left office in 1999, at the highest point of his power. He set people another good example. On Dec 5, 2013, Mandela passed away at the age of 95.
