Story of “The Three Trees”

Hello and welcome to English World once again. I am Mark.

And next to Mark, is me Guo Wen-J.

We have been talking on the topic of trees.

Can you think of something you use made by a tree?

Papers, pencils, baskets, ropes…

Also, chopsticks.

There you go. And our paper money.

And T-shirts.

That’s right. T shirts that are made with cotton.

And do you know that trees also live for a very long time.

Some trees can live for two hundred or two thousand years!

What do you think about that?

How old are trees?

How do we count the age of the tree?

? There’s a secret.

The trees in forests where there are seasons have annual rings in the core of wood.

By carefully counting the rings, we can find the age of the tree.

Wen-J, The oldest tree is a pine tree, about 4,700 years old.

That is amazing. But trees have one disadvantage.

Which is?

They can’t walk.

Ha…I can’t imagine walking trees.

Me, either.

Even so, they do have ways of moving around.

One way is through animals eating their fruit.

Want to know the other methods?

How Does the Tree Disperse?

Coconut seeds can float on the ocean for years before finding an island upon which to grow.

Cottonwood fluff can sail on a breeze for weeks.

Acorns are being planted in the ground by Squirrels.

Today, we are going to tell you a story called “The Three Trees”.

Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up.

The first little tree looked up at the stars and said: " I want to be the most beautiful treasure chest, covered with gold and filled with precious stones."

The second little tree looked out at the small stream and said " I want to be the strongest ship traveling mighty waters and carrying powerful kings. !

The third little tree looked down into the valley and said, I don't want to leave the mountain top at all. I want to be the tallest tree in the world.

And when people look at me they'll raise their eyes to heaven and think of God.

Years, passed. The rain came, the sun shone and the little trees grew tall.

───────────────────────────

One day three wood cutters climbed the mountain.

The first wood cutter looked at the first tree and said, "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me."

The second wood cutter looked at the second tree and said, "This tree is strong. It's perfect for me."

With a swoop of his ax, the second tree fell.

The third tree felt her heart sink when the last wood cutter looked her way.

She stood straight and tall and pointed bravely to heaven.

The wood cutter never even looked up. "Any kind of tree will do for me."

With a swoop of his shining ax, the third tree fell.

The fist tree was brought to a carpenter's shop. But it was not made into a treasure chest. Instead, The carpenter fashioned the tree into a feed box for animals.

She was coated with saw dust and filled with hay for hungry farm animals.

The second tree was also made into something that day. It was not made into a sailing ship. Instead, it was hammered into a simple fishing boat and was taken to a little lake.

The third tree was cut into strong beams and left in a lumberyard.

"What happened?" The once tall tree wondered. " All I ever wanted was to stay on the mountain top and point to God..."

Many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams.

─────────────────────────────

One night, a young woman placed her newborn baby in the feed box made from the first tree.

This manger is beautiful." The mother said.

And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world.

And one evening a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the old fishing boat.

The traveler fell asleep as the second tree quietly sailed out into the lake.

Soon there was thunder and a storm arose.

The tired man awoke. He stretched out his hand, and said, "Peace."

The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun.

And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the king of heaven and earth.

One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her beams were yanked from the forgotten wood pile.

She was carried through an angry crowd and made into the shape of a cross.

Soldiers nailed a man's hands to her. The third tree realized it was being used for a cruel purpose.

Onto her was being nailed the Son of God.

But on Sunday morning, the third tree knew that God's love had changed everything.

And every time people see her, they would think of God.

That was better than being the tallest tree in the world.

─────────────────────────────────Well, that was the story of “The Three Trees”.

How do you think about it, Wen-J?

Well, I like it. it’s quite touching. The three trees didn’t get what they

wanted, but…

But they became something much greater.

Huh hum.

──────────────────────────Well, dear friend, that’s it for today.
