Part III Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
A number of persons have expressed concern about possible health dangers to workers who use devices called video-display terminals (终端) or VDTs. These are the devices used to show computer information. Some reports link VDTs to health disorders including eye problems and muscle problems. Even the health of the pregnant women and their unborn babies is said to be endangered. Video-display terminals produce low levels of the electromagnetic radiation(电磁辐射). Experts say most modern VDTs have been designed to limit the dangers from such radiation. However, study shows that even low levels of electromagnetic radiations can affect the growth of the cells. As a result, some doctors advise women to stop working with VDTs while they are pregnant. One study found women who work with VDTs in early pregnancy are more likely than others to have their pregnancy end unexpectedly. Researchers said that this does not necessarily mean that VDTs themselves cause problems. Some experts said the findings show working conditions, not the machines, cause the problems. Law makers in m6re than American states have proposed bills to control working conditions for VDT operators.
16. What kind of disease does the VDTs cause?
A.Eye problems.
B.Muscle problems.
C.Health disorders.
D.Heart trouble.

A.to do other work than on VDTs
B.to change their computers if necessary
C.to go back home to have a rest
D.to have their health tested
18. Which of the following statement is false?
A.Study shows working with VDTs would cause miscarries (流产).
B.Study shows even low levels of radiation is harmful.
C.Study shows working conditions rather than VDTs have the pregnancy ended unexpectedly.
D.Study shows stopping working with VDTs is the best way to protect women’s health.
19. According to the passage we know most modern VDTs ______.
A.can change the working conditions for the operators
B.can limit the dangers from the electro-magnetic radiation
C.can also affect the growth of the cells
D.can protect the health of the computer operators

A.Problems Existing in the American States.
B.Working Conditions for VDTs Operators.
C.Health Dangers to Workers Using VDTs.
D.How to Protect the Pregnant Women.

There are many reasons of the tidal action which is a very complicated phenomenon involving many factors all of which must be considered to predict tide in any one place at any one time. The alternate rise and fall of the surface of the seas and the ocean is mainly caused by the attractive force of the moon alone. When the attraction is great, the tide is high; and conversely when the attraction is minimal, the tide is low. Between the high and the low tide is a period of a little over six hours, being called during its rise a flood tide, and during its fall an ebb tide. The sun also exerts its effect on the tide, being a lit fie less than half as much as the moon, although its mass is so much greater. When the moon and the sun are horizontal, the highest high tide occurs and when they are vertical the lowest low tide takes place. The wind also plays an important part in the modification of the normal rise and fall of the tide. Thus these factors affect each other, either detracting or adding to the attractive forces to add or subtract from the weight of the tide. But the tides still move inexorably on, rising twice a day, getting a little later each day and posing a problem of correctly predicting their heights and lows.
21. Which of the following factors will not affect the time of the tide?
A.The position of the sun and the moon.
B.The mass of the moon.
C.The wind.
D.All of the above mentioned factors.
22. The principal idea of this article is ______.
A.the attraction of the sun and the moon
B.the sun, the moon and the wind
C.the changing tide
D.the factors affecting the tide

23. It can be concluded from this article that the attraction of the sun is ______.
A.more than half that of the moon
B.more than that of the moon
C.more than twice that of the moon
D.half that of the moon
24. If the first high tide takes place at 1:00 A.M., the next high tide will probably take place at ______.
A.7:20 A.M.
B.8:00 A.M.
C.1:45 P.M.
D.high noon
25. According to this article, it is clear that the force of the moon
A.is not as important as that of the wind
B.is less than half as much as the sun
C.causes the alternate rise and fall of the surface of the seas
D.does not influence the rise and fall of the surface of the seas
Crime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns. The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: It is a weekend crime. It is also a night-time crime: 62 percent of murders are done between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.. Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, robbing has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February. The month with least crimes of all is May--except for one strange fact. More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year. Obviously our seasonal cycles of knowledge are completely different from our tendencies for crimes. Professor Huntington made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings and get highest results on examinations. In all cases, he found a separated high and autumn high separated by a summer low. Possibly, high temperature and high humidity cause our strange and violent summer actions, but police officials are not sure. “There is, of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder, “they say,” Why murder’s high time should come in the summer time we really do not know.”
26. A good title of the passage would be ______.
A.Crime-Cycles
B.Summer Crimes
C.A Time for Murder
D.The Most Peaceful Month
27. According to the passage, _____.
A.there is a link between changes in the seasons and crime patterns
B.crime is not linked to the cycle of the weekdays
C.there is a sure connection between murder and hot weather
D.there is a connection between robbing and murder
28. A murder would most likely occur _____.
A.on a weekend night in summer
B.on a weekend afternoon in summer
C.on a weekend night in winter
D.on a weekday afternoon in spring
本文第一段指出“Murder reaches ih high during July and August….It is a weekend crime.It is also a night-time crime…”,即:凶杀案的高发期是在每年的七、八两个月,而且多发于周末和夜间。
29. It is reported that more dog bites occur in ______.
A.February
B.December
C.May
D.January
30. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The police records were collected from a large number of cities and towns.
B.The pattern of crime varies from year to year.
C.Our cycles of learning are different from those of wrong action.
D.The police are not sure that humidity and murder are related.
Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way--was it through training and practice, or are great players” born, not made” ? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past--players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup--three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team--or a really great player--from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four. Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood--a poor, crowded area where a boy’s dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a “ball” made of rags. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums of Belfast. All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn’t explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.
31. According to the author, which of the following statements is true?
A.Soccer is popular all over the world, but truly great players are rare.
B.Millions of people all over the world are playing soccer, but only six countries have ever hadfamous stars.
C.Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but only six countries from SouthAmerica and western Europe have ever had great national teams.
D.All over the world soccer is one of the most popular games, but it seems least popular in North America or Asia.
从本文第一句“Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great.”
32. The word “tricks “at the end of paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A.experience
B.cheating
C.skills
D.training
33. Liverpool and Brazilian streets are two geographic terms used to illustrate ______.
A.where soccer players get their way
B.how neighbourhood affects a soccer player’s success
C.why they can produce the best soccer teams
D.what a poor, crowded area will provide a future soccer player with
34. In the last paragraph the statement “but only one became Pele” indicates that ______.
A.Pele is the greatest soccer player
B.the greatest players are born with some unique quality
C.Pele’s birthplace sets him apart from all the others
D.the success of a soccer player has everything to do with the family background
最后一句“最出色的球员天生就具有一些使他们区别于其他人的独特素质”恰好解释了前一句“Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele”。
35. To get the way for a great player, a series of factors are directly mentioned, except
A.age and birth
B.family and neighbourhood
C.training and practice
D.personality and character
(First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past——players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate)、长期的训练(Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game)、家庭影响(Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player,as was Pele)、年龄因素(Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four)、生活的社区(Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood),唯独没有提到个性因素。

The appeal of the world of work is first its freedom. The child is compelled to go to school: he is【21】of authority. As he grows up, he sees what it is to be free of school and to be able to choose his job and change it if he doesn’t like it. The boys and girls,【22】he has long observed, revisit school utterly changed and apparently mature. Suddenly teachers seem as out of date as his parents and the authority of school a ridiculous thing. At the moment the adult world may appear【23】the school world that the desire to enter it cannot be satisfied by exercises in school books. This may not be the【24】but it is a necessary part of growing up, for every man and woman must come sooner or later to the point of saying “Really, I’ve had enough of being taught; I must【25】”. Some young people come to this decision sooner than they ought. Yet in a way this is not a bad frame of mind to be in【26】leaving school. At work, the young man makes one of the first great acceptances of life——he accepts the discipline of the material or the process he is working with. He sees the point of it and in doing so【27】life. The work process constitutes a reality in some sense superior to that of school, and this is why he so often longs to get to grips with it. Nothing done in school imposes its will in【28】the same way; if the maths master is ill one can get on with something else. But even the boy delivering papers,【29】the driver taking out his bus, discovers that one cannot put it off because there is snow on the ground, or the foreman (工头) is easily annoyed, or he himself【30】that morning.

Part VII Writing
51. Write a composition on the topic “How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic.” Start writing your composition with the topic sentence: “In recent years many cities are faced with the problem of heavy traffic.” You are supposed to write at least 100 words in your composition using the words and expressions given below. waste time accident solution roads crowded advantage disadvantage
How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic In recent years many cities are faced with the problem of heavy traffic. People have to waste more time on their way home or to work and even might be involved in an accident. With the development of industry and population expansion, this problem becomes more and more serious. One solution is to lay down more roads. The solution has many advantages. For example, it can efficiently decrease the number of houses and trucks in many main streets. But it will take up so much land that crowded cities become more crowded. Another solution is to open up more bus lines. If more bus lines should be opened up, the number of bicycles and cars in the main streets would be greatly decreased. But the disadvantage of this solution is that many people wouldn’t feel so convenient as they used to. In my opinion, the right solution to the problem is the combination of the above two, that is, to lay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus lines in downtown areas.
