Dorothy, her uncle Henry, and her aunt Em live on a farm in the middle of Kansas. To prevent her beloved dog "Toto" from being taken away by the police for biting her Aunt Em's cat, Dorothy decides to leave with "Toto" temporarily. However, before they can leave the farm, Dorothy returns at the urging of Professor Marvel. Then, a powerful tornado strikes the farm, and Dorothy, along with her uncle's house, is whisked away into the air while everyone else takes shelter in the storm cellar.
After the tornado subsides, Dorothy emerges from the house to find herself in the land of the Munchkins, where the house has accidentally killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy is warmly welcomed and cherished by the grateful Munchkins, who give her the Witch's ruby slippers as a gift. When Dorothy expresses her desire to return home, the beloved Good Witch of the North directs her to the Emerald City to seek help from the Great Oz.
On her journey to the Emerald City, Dorothy befriends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, all of whom lack certain qualities they wish to possess. They embark on their journey together, ultimately reaching the Emerald City and defeating the Wicked Witch of the West. In doing so, the Scarecrow receives a brain, the Tin Man a heart, the Lion courage, and Dorothy, with the help of the slippers' magic, returns to her Kansas farm.
