Introduction:
Currently, A new travel way that people can choice is ecotourism. Maybe some people are still unfamiliar with ecotourism. Ecotourism is a kind of tourism that includes visiting fragile, and relatively undisturbed natural areas, and relatively undisturbed natural areas. Usually ecotourism has smaller scale alternative than standard commercial tourism. Actually the main purpose of ecotourism is educating the travelers, to provide funds for ecological conservation. (Burger, J. 2000). Meanwhile ecotourism also has a lot of benefit to local society.
Ecotourism also named as responsible tourism or jungle tourism. In the mid-1980s, ecotourism sustainable development and became prevalent concepts. The popularity represents a change in tourist perceptions, increased environmental awareness, and a desire to explore natural environments (Randall, A. 1987).
1, Ecotourism can make local economy increase
Tourists will cost a lot of money when they join ecotourism. For example, ecotourism has huge improvement in South Africa. Ecotourism has the potential to alleviate poverty in South Africa through bring money into local economy and make a lot of choice for people to get a job. The money that comes into South Africa is about 62billion per year (Naughton-Treves, 2005).
This huge amount money will cause economy increasing a lot. Even local people can do some business by themselves, for instance, they can open a small shop to sale some special local product. Most of tourisms want to take some special local product back when they are traveling. This kind of small business will let local people get extra money to get better life.
Another reason that ecotourism can make local economy increasing is that ecotourism can attract investment. For example, South Africa attracts a lot of tourists then some company invest a huge amount of money to local society. They build some park, hotel or other infrastructures.
"Ecotourism" is a growing source of revenue for the long-term management and care of more than 33,000 protected areas worldwide. It's not just about driving more tourists to these locations. That's the easy part: there are 700 million travelers in the world annually. And they generate roughly $2.4 billion dollars a day. It's about ensuring that visitors travel responsibly, help protect the wildlife they are visiting and contribute to the well-being of local society.(NB,2012)
2, Ecotourism can help tourists understand the important of protecting our environment.
Actually, the main purpose of ecotourism is education. They want tourists know the importance of protecting our environment. First of all, they will let tourists realize how beautiful the nature is. The nature view include mystery forest, great waterfall, beautiful beach. These beautiful nature views always can shock the tourists. When they are shocked, they will want to keep these beautiful nature views. Then they will know the importance of protecting nature environment.
Even local government can add some education about environment protecting in the ecotourism. A lot of natural parks have small cinema that show some mini movie about the history of this natural park and appeal to protecting environment. This is a good way to educate tourist understand the importance of environment protecting.
Generally speaking a good environment strategy should address the issue of Eco tourists and delete the part that the cause- and-effect of their actions on the environment. This situation always happens in normal tourism. But ecotourism gives more initiatives to tourists. More initiatives should be carried out to improve their awareness, sensitize them to environmental issues, and care about the places they visit (Hynonen 2001).
3, Ecotourism can help culture spread
Ecotourism can also spread the culture, both local culture and foreign culture. Because tourists always want to know special local culture, even want to learn local culture. And when they come back to their country, they may want to share the local culture with their friends. On the contrary, local people also learn foreign culture from tourism. It is this situation that cause culture spread.
4,Ecotourism can help natural resource management
Natural resource abuse may happen in local society, so natural resource management can be utilized as a specialized tool for the development of ecotourism. If human know the proper utilization of certain resources, people will save a lot of energy. For example, South Africa government already works with academics and industry operators to find better way to use resource.
5,Conclusion
Ecotourism should be supported. Maybe ecotourism not very mature, still has some problem. But it has a lot of advantage like improve local economy and help more people understand the importance of environment protecting. Even can help cultural spread. Ecotourism can also make local people have a better life.
