How hard we have all prayed (祈祷)to grow up quickly, and looked forward to the happy days of being a grown-up and enjoying the many interests that a youth should have.
At last, you have grown up. At least you are no longer a child. They call you "young lady". You then enjoy the pleasure of being a young lady. You are proud of being a grown-up teenager. People welcome you-this young lady warmly. You are glad that your prayer has been answered.
But there is always something that troubles you a lot. You say, "Papa and Mama, give me some money please. My pocket money is all gone already."
"No," they say, "Your age is a dangerous age. If you have too much money to spend, it won't do you any good." Then you have to stay at home because you dare not go out with an empty pocket.
Another time you tell your grandma, "Grandma, see, I am a grown-up now."
"Good, now, you can sit here and knit (编织)this for me while I go and have a rest" To show that you are no more a child, you have to sit there the whole afternoon doing the work, which only a grown-up can do. After an hour, you find it hard to do, and give the knitting basket back to your grandma. Your grandma criticizes(批评)your work. You hear what she says, "Such a big girl can't do such easy work." You wish then you were a child again.
But the fact is, you are growing up, and you can't help it. That's the way it goes.

Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees can communicate with each other. Not long ago, they learned some surprising things. First, a willow (柳树) which had been attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛毛虫) changed the chemicals c化学物质) of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars soon stopped eating them. Then, even more surprisingly, the willow sent out a special vapour (雾气) -a kind of message causing its neighbours to change the chemicals of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
Communication, of course, doesn't need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders(肩膀)and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds and movements. A bee(蜜蜂)does a little dance in the air, telling other bees where to find food. A dog barks when a stranger (陌生人) comes near. So why shouldn't trees have their ways of sending messages?
( )34. How was the willow able to communicate with other trees?
A. By changing its colour.
B. By dropping its leaves.
C. By shaking caterpillars off.
D. By giving off a special vapour.
( )35. The passage tells us that bees communicate by _______.
A. making special movements
B. making unusual sounds
C. touching one another
D. smelling one another
( )36. Choose the correct order of how the willow protected itself.
a. The willow changed the chemicals of its leaves.
b. The caterpillars stopped eating.
c. The caterpillars tried to attack the willow.
d. The willow sent out a signal to tell its neighbours to do the same.
e. The caterpillars began to eat the willow leaves.
f. The willow leaves tasted bad.

"Choo, Choo!" Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation (交通) system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not a real form of transportation.
The Chunnel is really the English familiar name for the Channel Tunnel. In French, it is called le tunnel sous La Manche. It is a rail tunnel under the English Channel at the Straits(海峡)of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.
Did you know that the British and the French had a race while they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15, 000 workers over seven years to make the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994.
The completed Chunnel cost about $ 21 billion. But it all paid off, because it quickly became very popular. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular.
There are three complete(完整的) tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the traveller trains. The small inner (内部的)one is a guidance (导航) train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track (=a line or route along which something travels or moves)is exactly parallel(平行) to each other.
There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger(乘客)service that connects London, Paris, Brussels and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry(轮渡) service. These shuttles carry cars and vans. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains.
Now you know more about the Chunnel. Everybody off, this is the last stop.
( )37. The Channel Tunnel connects _______ with _______.
A. London; Paris B. Cheriton; Sangatte
C. Lille; Brussels D. Dover; Kent
( )38. Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the tunnels in the Chunnel?
