I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class. Having taught in the US for 17 years, I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted, “stand up!” The entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down a-gain, but once the embarrassment was over, I quickly regained my calmness and admiration. I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.
My students kept diaries. However, as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today, perhaps her next lecture will be better.
“Greatly surprised.” I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme. “Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the entire(全部的)Western philosophy and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,” complained.”How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However, I also learned a lot, and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.

“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong…” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say” I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.”“Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
56. When a person in the United States asks “How are you?” he or she wants to hear “__________”.
A. Fine. B. Hello. C. I don’t know. D. How are you?
57. When a person disagrees with someone, it is polite to say “__________”.
A. You’re wrong. I disagree. B. I’m not sure.
C. I’m sure I disagree. D. No, I disagree.
58. A polite way to finish a talk is to say “_________”.
A. I have finished. B. I want to hang up.
C. I have to go now. D. I don’t want to talk any more.
59. The rule of the game of language is probably __________.
A. “Always say what you mean.” B. “Don’t disagree with people.”
C. “Never say exactly what you’re thinking.” D. “Be polite.”
60. Which of the following shows the right structure(结构) of the passage?

KidZui is a new browser(浏览器)and online service that lets kids aged 3 to 12 explore more than 500,000 websites, pictures and videos. The idea for KidZui came about when one of the founders, Vidar Vignission, saw how difficult it was for his children to enjoy the power and promise of the Internet in a safe way. Together with Cliff Boro and Thomas Broadhead, they decided to do something.
KidZui was first tested by 8,000 kids and their parents. Lisa Rebena, a parent whose child tested KidZui, said, “My 4-year-old daughter gets into KidZui, reads news and watches videos all by herself, generally doing what she pleases, I’m much more relaxed now when my daughter is on the computer.”
Content(内容)in KidZui has been reviewed by a team of more than 200 trained teachers and parents. They make sure that kids see content that is proper for their age in terms of developmental level and reading ability. New websites, pictures and videos are added to KidZui every day. When a young user tries to watch a video outside of KidZui, it will be reviewed and, if proper, added—often within a matter of hours.
Beside, parents can change the content available, add and take out some websites and see what their kids are viewing online. And KidZui sends out a weekly report of their kids’ recent searches and interests so that parents can plan family activities around their kid’s interests. After a 30-day free trial(试用)period, parents who sign up can take advantage of our special rates of $4.95 per month or $49.95 per year, a 50 percent discount(折扣)from standard rates of $9.95 per month or $99.95 per year.
