You probably know that the African elephant is the world’s largest land animal. But do you know about the world’s largest fish? The whale shark is our biggest fish and lives in many oceans, but few people have even heard of it.Scientists have not been studying whale sharks for very long.Much more needs to be learned about them.
A whale shark is sometimes called a“gentle giant”.The biggest whale shark weighs over24,000pounds and is nearly40feet long.It has a very broad head with a huge mouth at the front. The upper half of its body is dark grey with white spots. The skin on its back is thicker and tougher than the skin of any other animal. It likes to be alone and hardly cares about humans. We do not need to be afraid of them.
For such a giant fish, its eyes are small.Unlike many animals,a whale shark has no eyelids. To close its eyes for protection, the whale shark rolls its eyes and pulls them back into its head.Scientists think that sight must not be an important sense for the whale shark. They do know that whale sharks have special nerve endings(神经末梢)to help them find food, even in the dark deep ocean.
Inside that huge mouth are great numbers of tiny teeth. The whale shark’s teeth are in rows. There are between eleven and thirteen rows(排)on each jaw and around three hundred teeth in each row.A whale shark has at least three thousand teeth.
It was only a few years ago that scientists discovered how whale shark babies are born.Strangely enough,a female whale shark hatches(孵化)eggs inside her body. Then she gives birth to live young called pups. One whale shark was recorded as having three hundred pups!
For a few months every year,a group of whale sharks comes to Ningaloo Reef (礁),off Western Australia. This gives scientists a wonderful chance to study the huge fish.Whale sharks do live in other oceans of the world, but no one knows their total population. It is possible that our biggest fish may need protecting. It is one of the reasons why scientists continue to learn about these gentle giants.
51.What’s the difference between a whale shark’s eyes and most animals’?
A.They have no eyelids.
B.They stay closed in water.C.They move from side to side.
D.They become dark during the day.52.In Paragraph4,how does the writer tell about the whale shark’s mouth?
A.By comparing sizes.
B.By using numbers.
C.By giving examples.
D.By describing shapes
53.Why do scientists know little about whale sharks?
A.Because scientists find them too difficult to watch.
B.Because scientists have studied them for only a short time.
C.Because scientists do not know the best places to find them.
D.Because scientists are not interested in learning about them.
54.Which sentence best supports the idea that whale sharks are gentle?
A.They leave humans alone.
B.They give birth to live young.
C.They have special nerve endings.
D.They have small eyes and tiny teeth.

As a composer,Beethoven was a great talent. He liked to write,or compose, his own music. He heard music in his head. Then he wrote the songs down on paper. While writing,Beethoven played his songs on the piano to hear how they sounded. He would rewrite his music over and over. Finally,he would be pleased with his new music.
