Essay to The Most Dangerous Game

Cruel. Arrogant. Cold-blooded. Rainsford has such a strong and specific character as a hunter. Rainsford is the main character in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell. The story sets in a muggy tropical night at Ship-Trap Island near Caribbean. Rainsford is a dynamic character in the story. A dynamic character is someone who changes in the story. Throughout the whole story, the narrator created a sense of spooky to show the danger to the readers. From the story, there is an important lesson could be learnt, that is thoughts can be changed by experiences in different situations. 

  At the beginning of the story, Rainsford said “the world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are the hunters.” (Pg19) This quote reveals that Rainsford has his own opinion on hunting, and he enjoys being a hunter. Also, Rainsford is moral and he has some principles on hunting. Rainsford’s sense of humanity or right from wrong is evident when he says “I am a hunter, not a murderer.” (Pg27) Even though Rainsford is a cruel hunter, he knows the boundaries of humanity, unlike another character General Zaroff, is inhuman. At that time, Rainsford thinks that he himself is not only a good and experienced hunter, but also a gentleman. However, when Rainsford begins the hunting game with Zaroff, he changes his identity into a “cat”. 

  Zaroff is the master of Ship-Trap Island; he is familiar with this island. Rainsford knows the game is unfair and he has little chance to win the game, but he bravely decides to have a try to survive. Rainsford thinks “I have played the fox; now, I must play the cat of fable.” (Pg32) This quote displays that Rainsford has changed from a hunter to a huntee, but he is determined and brave, he keeps telling himself to calm down as he says “I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve.” (Pg32) Rainsford runs two hours and gives Zaroff trails to follow, he uses his courage and intelligence to fight with Zaroff. Additional, Rainsford sets three traps for Zaroff, so readers can see that Rainsford is becoming more and more cunning.

  Near the end of the story, Rainsford and Zaroff have an external conflict and Rainsford wants to have another “hunting game”. “Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay feels” (Pg36) This means Rainsford has changed his opinion on hunting animals because he has been a prey of Zaroff. Rainsford knows that he has to kill Zaroff so that he can escape from the island. In fact, he tries to do so. Even the narrator did not describe the process of this hunting, but readers can infer that Rainsford has killed Zaroff because “he had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided” (Pg36) This quote also reveals that Rainsford is no more a hunter as he once was, he became a cold-blooded murderer as Zaroff.

  In summary, readers can see that Rainsford has changed from a hunter to a huntee, and at last became a “murderer”; The characteristic of Rainsford also changed from good and honest to cold-blooded and inhuman. Things that cause Rainsford to change are experience, the surrounding environment and human being. When Rainsford is in dangerous and stressful situation, he tries his best to survive, however, what he has to pay is to change, so readers can find out that Rainsford is a dynamic character and what readers could learn is thoughts can be changed by experience.
