Santa Claus Does Not Forget
Bertie was a very good boy, but he always forgot. No matter what he was asked to do, in the end his answer always was “I
forgot.” If he was sent to the store to get something, he would
return with nothing but his usual answer.
His parents decided that something must be done to make the little boy remember.
Christmas was near, and Bertie was busy making out a long list of things that he wanted Santa Claus to bring him.
“Santa Claus may forget some of thos e things.” said his mother.
“He cannot,” replied Bertie , “because I will write all the things on this paper. Then Santa Claus can see it and put the things in my stocking(长袜).”
Christmas morning came, and Bertie was up early to see what was in his stocking. His mother kept away from him as far as she could, for she knew what Santa Claus had done.
Finally she heard him coming to her room. He held a list in his hand, which is much longer than the one he had made out. He put it in his mother’s hand , while tears of disappointment fell from his eyes. It was a list of all the things that Bertie had forgotten to do over the last six months. At the end of all was written, in big letters, “I FORGOT.”.
Bertie cried for an hour. Then they went to grandp a’s house. There for the first time he saw a Christmas tree. It was very strange to Bertie, but on the Christmas tree he found everything he had written on his list.

Technology to Help Developing Countries
When we think about giving help to developing countries,
we often think about giving money so that these countries can
build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean
water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs
of the people we are trying to help. However, it’s far from enough. Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got to come up with some better ideas to help them.
I was very surprised, then, when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.
The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be covered in rubber(橡胶)so that it is very strong and won’t be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle so that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when needed.
These special laptop computers will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the children’s education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children’s education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.
Another idea to help children in developing countries is to
recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the
UK, and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile
phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by
throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them. In this way we will be able toachieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to “kill two birds with one stone”, and that is always a good thing.
53. The expression “be damaged” in Paragraph 3 probably mean s “_________”.
A. be fixed
B. be hurt
C. be used
D. be broken
54. From the passage we can learn that the cheap laptop __________.
A. can help the developing countries with the electricity supply
B. can be moved and carried with the help of a special handle
C. can help the children’s education by surfing the Internet
D. will be covered with rubber so that it can save money
55. The writer may agree that in developing countries these ideas can _________.
A. help the children reduce waste and earn money
B. be good for the environment and the education
C. help the children solve the problems at once
D. provide the basic needs for the people there

You might hear about all the different clubs at your
school and wonder – where did they all come from? How do
you start a school club? This simple step-by-step guide will
show you how to start a club right from the beginning to the
end.
Work out the plan. Choose a time and a place for your club. Decide on a roomto hold the club in with your friend, and speak with the person in charge of the room. Agree with them on a time, but make it during school hours, and not during lessons or work time. Plan out how the club will run. At many schools, students start planning the club before the summer vacation.
Find responsible people. You can’t start a club with only one member. Every club needs some people who are responsible, intelligent and hardworking. A club including people like this will certainly succeed. Also starting to talk with the responsible friends will help in the planning of the club so that you will not have to do it by yourself.
Talk to the teachers.Speak to the teachers of both your classes and your members’ classes. If all of them agree on your plan, you may speak to the headmaster. If the headmaster agrees, move on to the next step.
Persuade(说服)others to join. The first thing is to create a poster. On the poster, you can introduce your club with some pictures to attract others. Prepare a speech. Make people understand the motive of your club and different needs of the club. This will provide a clear view to get people to join.
Stay organized. Now that a club has started, it is not over yet. All of the hard parts may have passed, but there is still the maintenance(维护)of the club. You need to make sure that everything works well and members can learn and enjoy themselves in the club.
Enjoy your club!
61. Will this step-by-step guide show you how to start a club?
