阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

A. Music is a must as a course at school B. Music builds children's self-confidence

Many people think that the BBC news programs are better than those on other channels because the BBC is not a commercial company. It pays for its programs from the television license money which everyone must pay if they have a television.

In 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors tell tales of their exciting lives at sea. Travel was attractive to young Henson. So he made up his mind to find a job on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. With the help of the ship’s captain and other sailors, Henson learned many subjects. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, Lieutenant (海军上尉) Robert Peary came in to buy a hat and he asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America and he needed a man to help him. The shop owner knew about Henson’s skills and experience at sea, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Peary and Henson had a lot in common, including their love of the sea.
One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole (北极). He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers (探险家) made two trips together to the North Pole. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time. The cold, wind, and ice were worse than either of them had ever imagined. In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt (尝试) at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship in the North Pole cold had taken their toll on both men.
They made a mad dash (猛冲) straight across the ice toward the pole. In April 1909, Peary and Henson finally arrived at the North Pole.

We now think of chocolate as sweet, but once it was bitter. We think of it as a candy, but once it was a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it is part of the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called mole and pour it over chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers.
Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say “Ugh!” and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste.
The word “chocolate” comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink.
When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for the digestion.
In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better.
Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie. Favorite desserts are chocolate cream pie and of course an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce.
33. It was ______that discovered sugar could remove the bitter taste of cacao.
A. the workers in the chocolate factory B. the Spaniards
C. the people in England D. the owner of a chocolate factory.

范文
I am happy to see that China put a ban on indoor public smoking on May 1st, 2011. But to achieve this goal, there is a long way to go, because there are still many smokers who continue to smoke in indoor pub-lic places.
The first reason for the problem, I think, is that we haven’t made the smoking ban known to the pub-lic. In fact, many people don’t know about the ban at all. Secondly, those who smoke in indoor public places aren’t punished enough. So they would rather smoke than follow the rule.
In my opinion, on the one hand, we should let more people know about the ban; on the other hand, we should punish smokers who don’t obey the rule harder.
