Step 2 Lead in and exploring

      What dreams do you have in your life? Do you want to be famous and rich? There is nothing you can’t do if someone believe in you. Do you have friends and family who encourage you to work hard when you feel down? Or maybe you are the one who supports others in achieving success. One of the greatest gift you can give yourself is to find what you want most in life and then go after it. Remember though: Don’t forget to ask for help along the way.

       Everyone hopes to have a successful career. Yet what kind of person can be regarded as successful in his/her career? What should a person do in order to be successful? Different people may have different ideas.

Step 3 New word and phrases

1. diner n. 1) (路边的)小餐馆   2)（在餐馆）吃饭者，进餐者 

        dine v. 吃饭，就餐 e.g. We dined at an exclusive French restaurant.

      2. fellow adj. another or others like yourself in the same situation 同类的  follow★

            n. an absence of sth that is needed 缺乏 e.g. A lack of food force many people

5. serve→service n.             servant n. 仆人，佣人

      ↘server 服侍者，伺候者 waiter waitress  服务员，侍者

6. alike adj. the same, similar 相同，相似 e.g. The two children are very alke.

      adv. 相同地，相似地 e.g. We try hard to treat the men and women alike in the compony.

7. pride n. 骄傲，自豪，自大 take pride in sb/sth 对…感到骄傲，得意；引以为荣

       v. 对…感到得意，以…自豪

 proud adj. 自豪的，自负的 be proud of sth/to do sth/that

8. achievement n. 成绩，成就 e.g. He felt that the book was her greatest achievement.

  achieve v. 获得，完成  

+ment 用以构成名词，指状态，行动或特质 development arrangement excitement

9. salesman n. 男推销员；男售货员  saleswoman  salesperson 

  sale n. 1) 销售，出售  2) 廉价清货，大减价  on sale 上市，出售

  salesclerk (US): clerk, shop assistant 店员

10. faith n. 信心；信任；信仰 e.g. I have lost faith in him.  lose heart 失去信心

          have faith in sb: believe in; trust 相信，信任

   broker n. 经纪，经纪人

Step 5 Intensive reading

1. My first long-term job, though, was at a local diner called Mel’s place.

  long-term adj. 长期的  short-term 短期的

2. Helen was in her 60s, had red hair, and tons of self-respect— something I was really lacking. I look up to Helen because ……

   look up to 尊重，敬仰 e.g. Many teenagers look up to Jordan for more than his basketball skills.

 3. I also learned how important it is to take pride in life’s little achievements: when I helped out in the kitchen, for example…..
