Let’s talk about manias. Let’s start with Beatle mania: hysterical teenagers, crying, screaming, pandemonium. Sports mania: deafening crowds, all for one idea—get the ball in the net. Okay, religious mania: there’s rapture, there’s weeping, there’s visions. Manias can be good. Manias can be alarming. Or Manias can be deadly.

 The word has a new mania. A mania for learning English. Listen as Chinese students practice their English by screaming it. T: I will change my life ！S：I will change my life. T: I don’t want to let my parents down. S: I don’t want to let my parents down. T:I don’t ever want to let my country down. S: I don’t ever want to let my country down. T: Most importantly, S: Most importantly, T: I don’t want to let myself down. S: I don’t want to let myself down.

How many people are trying to learn English worldwide? Two billion of them. S: A t-shirt, a dress…  In Latin America, in India,  in Southeast Asia, and most of all in China. 

If you are a Chinese student, you start learning English in the third grade, by law. That’s why this year China will become the word’s largest English speaking country. Why English? In a single word: Opportunity. Opportunity for a better life, a job,to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table.

Imagine a student taking a giant test for three full days. Her score on this one test literally determines her future. She studies 12 hours a day for three years to prepare, 25 percent of her grade is based on English. It’s called the Gaokao, and 80 million high school Chinese students have already taken this grueling test.

The intensity to learn English is almost unimaginable, unless you witness it. 

T: Perfect! S: Perfect! T: Perfect! S: Perfect! T: I want to speak perfect English. S: I want to speak perfect English. T: I want to speak…S: I want to speak…T: Perfect English. S: Perfect English. T: I want to change my life! S: I want to change my life!

So is English mania good or bad？Is English a tsunami, washing away other languages? Not likely. English is the word’s second language. Your native language is your life. But with English you can become part of a wider conversation：a global conversation about global problems, like climate change or poverty, or hunger or disease. The word has other universal languages. Mathematics is the language of science. Music is the language of emotions. 

And now English is becoming the language of problem—solving. Not because America is pushing it, but because the world is pulling it. So，English mania is a turning point, like the harnessing of electricity in our cities or the fall of the Berlin Wall. 

English represents hope for a better future, a future where the world has a common language to solve its common problem. Thank you very much!

全世界有多少人正在努力学习英语呢？二十亿。S: A t-shirt，a dress… 他们在拉丁美洲，在印度，在东南亚，但主要在中国。

如果你是一名中国学生，按照法律，在小学三年级就得学习英语。这就是为什么今年中国将成为世界上最大的讲英语的国家。英语为什么会这样？一个词：机会。更好生活、工作的机会，为了能付得起学费，或得到更好的衣食。

试想，一个学生参加一个持续三整天的大型考试。她在这次考试中的成绩几乎决定自己的未来。为了准备这次考试，三年来，她每天学习12个小时，英语成绩占她总成绩的25%。这就是所谓的高考，已有8千万中国高中生曾经参加过这种激烈而紧张的考试。

这种学习英语的强烈程度几乎是不可想象的，除非你亲眼目睹。

那么，英语狂热是好还是坏呢？英语像海啸，正在冲走其他的语言吗？不可能的。英语是世界第二语言。你的母语才是你的第一生命。但用英语你可以进行更广泛的交流：参与全球问题的全球对话，比如气候变化、贫穷，饥饿或疾病。

这个世界上还有其他的通用语言：数学是科学的语言；音乐是感情的语言。

现在，英语正在成为一种解决世界问题的通用语言。不是因为美国推崇它，而是因为世界需要它。因此，英语热是一个转折点，犹如城市电力的利用或柏林墙的倒塌势不可挡。

英语代表对美好未来的希望：在未来的世界有一个共同的语言用来解决共同的问题。非常感谢您们！
