Is Your Diet Destroying the Environment?
A vegetarian diet is often praised for its health benefits. Studies have shown that vegetarians usually have lower levels of heart disease and a lower risk of diabetes than people who eat meat. What most people are less aware of, however, are the effects that a vegetarian diet can have on the environment.
Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the US recently studied how consumer behavior affects the environment. The study showed that meat consumption is one of the main ways that humans can damage the environment, second only to the use of motor vehicle.
Then, how can eating meat have a negative effect on the environment? For a start, all farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep give off methane (沼气) gas by expelling (排出) wind from their bodies. One cow can produce up to 60 liters of methane each day. Methane gas is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated that 25% of all methane released into the atmosphere comes from farm animals.
Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef, whereas 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes.
Many people now see the benefits of switching to a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays a vital role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.
Today, many people know it’s important to take better care of their bodies and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarians.
21.The underlined word “it” in Para.3 refers to ___________.
A. methane gas B. carbon dioxide
C. expelling wind D. greenhouse gas
22.Many figures are used in Para.4 to show ___________.
A. growing tomatoes has the highest production
B. crop production is better than meat production
C. meat production consumes too much water and land
D. farm animals are the main producer of the methane gas
23.What message does the passage want to convey?
A. Our diet is destroying the surroundings.
B. Raising farm animals affects the environment.
C. A vegetarian diet helps to protect the environment.
D. More and more people are becoming strict vegetarians.

It's hard to talk to dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.
But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit, I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.
Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter. Dad, a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that "life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns".
I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn't too late. I cried because at 33, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit "Send".
We've since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven't been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It's hard to talk to dad sometimes, but I'm glad I found a way to talk to mine.
24.What can the author's dad be best described?
A. Quiet and caring. B. Optimistic and careless.
C. Selfish and lonely. D. Indifferent and serious.
25.What does the underlined part "pull back the curtain" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Draw the curtain. B. Become more optimistic.
C. Show his true self. D. Clear the misunderstanding.
26.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Communication Is the Best policy
B. Emails from My Dad
C. A Man of Few Words
D. My Mysterious Dad
27.Which of the following is NOT true?
A. My dad's email was quickly written.
B. I was moved when reading the email.
C. The email contained much information.
D. I wished I could have consulted him earlier.

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音调).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music "actually tunes our sensory system". This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin (普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding (编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word "mi" in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
32.When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find ________.
A. he has a difficult time learning music at the same time
B. he has an easier time learning music at the same time
C. it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D. it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
33.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C. Because music training might help people with language study.
D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
34.The underlined word "intoned" in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word "____".
A. created B. spelled C. seemed D. pronounced
35.What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
