Ever heard of a rice-bread making machine? You just put in some rice, press a button and in a few minutes you have a loaf of fresh bread. The Japanese company that makes the machine says its product is so popular it has had to stop taking orders.
Sanyo Electric Co Ltd calls its machine Gopan, which is a combination (合成) of the Japanese for “rice” and “bread”. Users place washed rice in the Gopan and the machine does the rest, from milling (研磨) the rice to the kneading (揉面) and baking.
Though the rice-bread making machine is expensive at $600 (4,000 yuan), it quickly sold out after it went on the market last month. The company said it would not be taking orders for the Gopan until next April.
Japanese food expert Hisao Nagayama thinks the machine has been such a hit because of the changing eating habits of the Japanese. The country is eating more Western food, and people’s busy lives make it harder for them to find the time to cook and eat rice.

The days when young Americans would record their thoughts in a diary and hide it under their pillow are long gone. Today, they are far more likely to speak their minds on their page, or post video diaries on .
Take, for example, 14-year-old Bethany Mota, who posts regular videos on about products she has bought.

The majority (大多数) of young people who write on a daily basis post their thoughts on websites like LiveJournal.com or .
This is not to say, however, that teenagers don’t put pen to paper any more. Many schools and parents use short-term journal projects as learning tools.

What do you think of the new video game you bought last month?”
The Stir blog at CafeMom.com gives parents and teachers other ideas, including journaling about trips and making a daily “happy list” during the summer.

ONE in 100 people around the world dies from secondhand smoke each year, a new study shows. Nearly two-thirds of the deaths happen in children.
More than 1 billion people around the world smoke and 5 million people die each year from tobacco-related (和烟草有关的) illness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). That’s about one person dying every six seconds. Health experts have known this for a while.
But just how many people are sickened by secondhand smoke has been less clear until now.
According to a WHO study published in the British medical journal The Lancet last month, data collected from 192 countries in 2004 shows that as many as “40 percent of children, 35 percent of women, and 33 percent of men are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke indoors”.
The researchers then estimate that secondhand smoke causes about 600,000 deaths every year. That accounts for about 1 percent of the world’s deaths.
Tobacco use is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, according to the WHO. The study authors estimate that 165,000 children under the age of 5 die each year from diseases caused by secondhand smoke – and most of these deaths happen in Africa and South Asia.
Health experts believe more needs to be done to create completely smoke-free indoor environments.
In another article in the same issue of The Lancet, health experts Jonathan Samet and Heather Wipfli say their research from 31 countries found that 88 percent of parents who smoked did so at home and that over 80 percent smoked near their children. They say it is important to create smoke-free homes, which would help lower the number of people who sicken and die as a result of other people’s smoke.
In the UK, the British Lung (肺) Foundation is asking the government to ban smoking in cars.
Helena Shovelton, the foundation’s CEO, said smoking parents often underestimate the danger of their smoking to their children.
“They absolutely would not do something dangerous like leaving their child in the middle of the road but somehow, smoking in front of them is fine,” she said.
