Ⅰ. Introduction
Nowadays, scientific technique which takes information technique as the main indictor rapidly develops. And the globalization of knowledge-based economy is changing the way people product and live; the knowledge-based economy which is based on innovative knowledge marks an important direction of the future world. And this makes knowledge and talent, he national quality and innovative ability an important sign to measure overall national strength. And education is the fundamental way. English is one important tool which connects the human civilization and communication. In today’s world, English has been recognized as a necessary basic skill and it becomes an important course in our class.
Ⅱ. China’s foreign language teaching situation in schools
2.1 An overview of the school about foreign language teaching in China
At present, there are nearly 2 hundred million students including in primary school, middle school and high school. Only 47 thousands of them learn Japanese and Russian, and the rest of them learn English. Offering English in primary school is increased year after year. According to incomplete statistics, there is not only about 80 thousand middle schools open English course, but also some 50 foreign language schools offer English class. In addition, vocational high schools and technical schools require the creation of English classes. There are also thousands of private schools have set up English class.
2.2 The achievement of English teaching in china
Since the 90’s, the reform at the core of courses and teaching material builds a good foundation for all-sided English education.
2.2.1 Update values and develop students’ ability of using language
English is a practical tool for a very strong class. Therefore, when we write textbooks we must use combine subject, structure and communication to improve it. When teaching, we should pay attention to the meaning of language, focus on bringing up students’ ability of using language and solving problems, put students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills an important position. And make students have the basic ability to communicate with English. After several years’ practice, we have improvements. The majority of areas of English class have already freed students from rigid word memory, cumbersome syntax analysis and strict translation of text. And this makes the class a place where teachers and classes can communicate their feelings and idea.
2.2.2 Modernize the teaching methods
In order to create a English environment in schools, all begins to attach importance to English teaching equipments, such as tape recorders and projectors. Many schools have language laboratories; some schools use computers to carry out multi-media teaching; even some schools set up multimedia library and reading room and start teaching online.
2.2.3 Strengthen and promote the exchange of Chinese and English teaching
Over the past 20 years, the development of my secondary school English curriculum and teaching materials had been concerned by the world. And the cooperation between china and foreign countries to write the textbook made great efforts on communication between them two. China education association professional committee of foreign language teaching having held its first international seminar in the spring of 1994 ended my secondary schools’ English teaching and science closure. Recent years, we did academic exchanges with English, America and Japanese, etc. And we also sent teachers and researchers abroad to learn, attend international committees as well as invited foreign professors in to attend our classes.
To sum up, during ten years, china has made considerable progress. And the progress was presented at the improvement of quality of English education/ there was a research about English mark increased 30 points. The result showed that china’s secondary schools had good marks in English education.
Ⅲ. The development of china’s English education
Fact has proved that china’s English teaching in schools has made encouraging progress. However, because of the historical reasons, such as poor foreign language teaching in primary and secondary schools, teachers’ old teaching concept, coupled with the heavy pressure of the test, making it difficult getting rid of its poor condition. Generally, teachers’ professional level and language environment were low. Schools lacked teaching skills and methods and language environment. And all these would lead to a low level of English. To catch up with the fast developing society, we need to develop English.
3.1 To promote quality education
New curriculum standards of English class are made in the 21st century. This represents the spirits of quality education.
3.1.1 Face to all students, respect individual’s differences, and create enough conditions for students’ development
In my hometown, my high school was too poor to offer enough instruments to every student to show themselves. But with the help of our country, each classroom in our high school has multimedia instruments, and from then on, each has chance to present his English. And our teacher gave each many topics to choose which was fit for him.
3.2.2 Motive and bring up interest in learning English
Every student likes playing outside, and few of them can sit studying quietly with their mind. And in our school, teacher tries new method to let his student show content in class instead of him. And this makes student learn more and have more interest to learn English.
3.2 The difficulties with English education in china
“The Chinese teachers are very dedicated, and there are some very capable teachers. As the market continues to compete, parents’ expectation to their children are increasing, parents always expect their children can get rapid improvement in a short time. And all these give English education problems. Ms. Julia shows that the pressure the exams bring presses on English teaching. She says that it not only the problem students faced, but also society faced.
Ⅳ.Conclusion
English education in china still has many problems, but it also has great market, for Chinese population is large. And because of the rapid developing economy, English will be used everywhere and every time. Though many problems, English education is essential in china. English is not language itself, but a basic tool to communicate.
