A man suspected that his wife had a hearing problem. In order to confirm this, he walked up quietly behind her and, at about ten paces away, he asked, “Can you hear me, Jane?"  There was no reply from his wife.

He then moved five steps closer and asked, "Can you hear me, Jane?" His wife still did not answer.

Started to realize how bad his wife's hearing was, he moved up another two paces and asked, "Jane, can you hear me now?"

This time he heard his wife say, "Yes, I can hear you! I've already told you three times."

As I laugh at this story， I sense that I am seeing a inflection of myself. How many times have I acted like this “husband”?  That is, when there is a problem, I tend to think that it must be the other person’s fault — but then it turns out that I am the one who is to blame! Sometimes, I think I am being tolerant of other people, without realizing that I am actually the one who is being tolerated

The man in the joke was not a bad person. Because he wasn't very confident about his suspicion, he used a three-step process to search for the truth. And, happily at the third step he did find out the true situation: his dear wife has indeed retained her good hearing. We as the "husbands" may not even have this questioning spirit in regard to ourselves, because we genuinely think we have enough evidence to prove that there is nothing wrong with us.

Furthermore, if others share our opinion, we feel even more confident. As to how good the "hearing" of those who share our opinion is, and how good our own hearing is, we don't have time to consider that.

On International Women's Day, 8 March 2013 UN Women will launch "One Woman: A song for UN Women", a musical celebration of women worldwide, featuring more than 20 artists from across the globe. As of today, behind-the-scenes videos chronicling the song's year-long production will be available at http://song.unwomen.org to count down toward the launch. On March 8, the site will feature the full song video and make the track available for download.

"One Woman" calls for change and celebrates acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who daily make extraordinary contributions to their countries and communities. The lyrics (歌词)are inspired by stories of women whom UN Women has supported. UN Women is the UN organization charged with advancing women's empowerment (授权)and gender equality worldwide. It began its work in 2011, the first new UN organization in decades. "One Woman" is the first theme song for a UN organization.

Initially performed during the launch event for UN Women in the UN General Assembly Hall in 2011, “One Woman" aims to become a rallying cry (战斗口号）that inspires listeners about the mission of UN Women and engages them to join in the drive for women's empowerment and gender equality.

Singers and performers from all regions, women and men, donated their time and contributed their talent. The music of the song is by Graham Lyle (Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To  Do With It" and many other hits) and British / Somali singer-songwriter Fahan Hassan. Jerry Boys, who has worked with a wide range of artists including REM, Everything But The Girl and was one of the people behind the Buena Vista Social Club recording, produced the song, together with lyricist and executive producer Beth Blatt and her organization Hope Sings

Microsoft, as UN Women's corporate partner for "One Woman" has sponsored the song and music video production.

The song will be available for purchase on the song website and all common channels like iTunes and Amazon for $0.99. All proceeds go directly to UN Women in support oi its programmes to empower women on the ground.

America's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is celebrating the one year anniversary of its Weather-Ready Nation project. Weather experts from across the United States have been working to improve the way the country reacts to extreme weather. They way scientific progress has made weather forecasts, or predictions, better than ever. But, they say the cost of severe weather on life and property is still too high.

NOAA says a new generation of equipment has already made its global numerical weather prediction system nearly three times faster in the past seven months. This is expected to improve NOAA's forecast models.

Scientist and weather experts have launched a similar effort in the Philippines. It is called Project NOAH 一 the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (危害).

Mahar Lagmay is the head of Project NOAH. He says his country needs high-resolution imaging to predict when and where natural disasters will strike

"To be able to construct hazard maps you need very high resolution topography. To do the simulations of floods you do need high resolution topography."

He also ways these images will be used to create smaller area maps, which will shape how people react to natural disasters.

"By doing local scale, or community scale maps, people can relate with the problem because they see their houses, they see their neighbor's houses, the bridge in their community, and the river in their community in relation to the hazards 一 the flood hazards in particular" 

Geologist Carlos Primo David also works with Project NOAH. He says the group depends on satellites, Doppler radar and hundreds of rain gauges (计里器） across the country. He says the resulting forecasts are very detailed, and can even predict the intensity of rainfall.

The Philippine state weather agency used rainfall information from Project NOAH when Manila flooded in August. The weather agency also re-broadcast its warnings on the social networking website Twitter. And a color coded warning system was also put in place

Mahar Lagmay says the project passed its first test. He says the government used the information to move people to safety.

"Relatively it was successful because what we wanted to avoid was mass death." He says now the government has to get people to take severe weather events more seriously, and to actively prepare for the worst.
