A Survey of British and American Literature, Essay Questions:

(Directions: You need to choose 5 questions from the following list to write response essays. Among the 5 questions you choose, at least ONE must be related to American literature. The answer to each question should not be less than 200 words. ORIGINALITY is most valued. You need to hand in the paper on January 7, 2014) 

1. “The General Prologue” in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales presents a vivid cross-section of the people who composed the various social classes of 14th Century England. Which characters does Chaucer seem to esteem or criticize? What attributes do these characters have that Chaucer appears to value or not?

2. What are the major themes of Shakespearean Sonnets? Illustrate one of Shakespeare’s sonnets which appeals to you most, and state your reasons for appreciating this sonnet. 

3. Compare Christopher Marlow’s The Jew of Malta and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in their characterization of the Jew. 

4. Hamlet is generally seen as a melancholy thinker, much given to meditation and speculation, unable to carry out the revenge. Do you agree or not? Give your reasons.

5. Make some comment on Milton’s application of the biblical narrative in Paradise Lost. Is Satan a heroic figure in this epic poem? Justify your reasons.

6. Analyze the use of conceit in any one of John Donne or Andrew Marvell’s poems. 

7. We’ve discussed Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe in the context of 18th Century rise of the novel. Based on your reading of Crusoe’s life on the island, in what sense do you think Crusoe represents the rising bourgeoisie?  

8. Henry Fielding and Samuel Richardson established the two major traditions of English novel writing, with the former concentrating more on the social matters and the latter more on the inner psychology. Compare these two writers, and illustrate your points with some examples. 

9. William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats are all great poets of the Romantic period. Analyze one poem from any of these four poets and discuss how the poem reflects romantic spirit.  

10. Many of Keats’ poems articulate the concept “Beauty is truth, truth beauty”, how does this concept relate to the ideals in romanticism? Is there a difference between Keat’s idea of “Beauty is truth” and Oscar Wilde’s exaltation of beauty?

11. Sir Water Scott had once stated his admiration for Jane Austen: “That young lady has a talent for describing the involvement of feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I have ever met with. … the exquisite touch which renders ordinary common place things and characters interesting, from the truth of the description and the sentiment….” Give your opinions on Scott’s comment and discuss Austen’s unique contribution to English literature. 

12. Choose one from the following Victorian novelists—Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot, Mrs Gaskell, Thomas Hardy. Name one of his or her works, and discuss the Victorian society as demonstrated in this work. 

13. Discuss one of Charles Dickens’ characters you find most unforgettable or he has most successfully created. Do you think E. M. Foster’s theory of “round character” or “flat character” applies to his characterization?

14. The thematic concerns of Victorian poetry are different from Romantic poetry. Compare Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach” with Wordsworth’s “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”, how is nature perceived in these two poems?

15. Based on your reading of Virginia Woolf’s works (fictions or essays), discuss what is her idea of “reality” and what kind of technical innovations she has made to present this kind of reality. 

16. James Joyce in writing Dubliners states that his intention was to “write a chapter of the moral history of my country and I chose Dublin for the scene because that city seemed to me the centre of paralysis.” Pick one story from Dubliners and discuss in what ways are the central characters paralyzed? What forces render them unable to act?

17. Discuss the general philosophy of Transcendentalism in terms of its connections with romanticism. How is it manifested in Emerson, Thoreau or Whitman’s works (pick one)? 

18 Many of Emily Dickinson’s poems are devoted to the subject of death and immortality. Give examples of Two or more of such poems and analyze her view on death. What similarities or differences in her idea of death do you find in these poems? 

19. Discuss the allegorical implication of the characters Hester Prynne, Pearl and Arthur Dimmesdale in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. 

20. Like Hawthorne, Melville manages to achieve the effect of ambiguity through employing multiple views in Moby Dick. How is Captain Ahab’s fight with Moby Dick viewed by other characters in the novel? And what is your understanding of this symbolic struggle?
