Period 1 Section A 1a—2d

2.How to train students’ communicative competence. 

   1. Look at the chart in 1a, then discuss with your group mates. Try to fill in the chart with words to describe people. 

2. Let some Ss say their answers. Let other Ss add more.

   Present some pictures about the new words, then learn.

Step 3. Listening

1. T: Here are some things belonging to those five people. Listen and match each person with a thing and a reason.

2. Play the recording for the Ss to listen. 

3. Ss listen and try to match the each person with a thing and a reason.   

4. Check the answers.

Step 4. Pair work 

1. Look at the conversation in 1c and make conversations in pairs.    

2. Let some pairs ask and answer in pairs.  

e.g. A: Whose book is this? 

B: It must be Mary's. J.K. Rowling is her favorite writer.

Work on 2a:  

T: Bob and Anna found a schoolbag at the park. Listen and write down the things in the schoolbag. 

1. Look at the chart in 2a. 

 2. Play the recording for the Ss to listen and check the words they hear. 

3. Play the recording again to check the answers.

1. Let Ss read the sentences below. Explain some main sentences for the Ss. Make sure they know what to do. 

2. Play the recording for the Ss to fill in the blanks with the right words.

Step 6.Pair work 

1. Tell Ss to make conversations about the schoolbag using the information in 2a. 

2. Let some pairs act out their conversations before the class.

Step 7. Role-play  

1. Read the conversations and Let Ss read after the teacher.  

2. Explain some new words and main points in the conversation.

Step 8. Language points

  1. It must belong to Carla.

    belong to 意为“属于”，它一般不用于进行时态和被动语态。如：

    The hair band belongs to Anna. (√)

    The hair band is belonging to Anna. (×)

此外, belong to sb. 通常可以和名词性物主代词或名词所有格(一般是’s 所有格)互相转换。如：

The blue jacket belongs to him / Jerry. →

The blue jacket is his / Jerry’s.

2. Well, where did you last put it ?

    last  adv. 上次; 最近的一次; 最后一次

    last除用于句末外, 还常置于句子中间。

    e.g. When I last saw her, she was working in Shanghai.

        我上次见她时, 她在上海工作。

        When did you see him last?

        你最近见到他是什么时候?

3. I think somebody must have picked it up.

    must在此处表示推测, 意为“一定”。英语中当情态动词后接have done时, 表达对过去的事情进行推测, 故must have done something表示“过去一定做过了”这样的意思。

    e.g. He’s playing outside. He must have finished his homework.

Be able to use “ could/might/must ” to make inferences.

3.Moral aim:

Helping each other is very important. It is a good quality.

Revise the conversations in 1b. Get different pairs of students to talk    about who each thing might belong to and give a reason.

Step 2  Presentation

I.2a  This activity provides listening practice using the target language.  Using a hair band, teach students to practice the words. Point to the     numbered list with blank lines after each number. Play the recording the  first time.  Play the recording a second time.  Check the answers. 

II. 2b

This activity provides listening and writing practice using the target     language.

Call students' attention to the chart. Point to the numbered list of sentences which contain a blank. Read the sentences to the class saying blank    when coming to a write-on line.

.Point to the box that contains the explanations of how to use the words must, might, could and can't. Read the explanations to the class.        III.2c

This activity provides writing practice using vocabulary introduced in the unit. Read the instructions to the class. Point to the list of sentences that contain a blank. Elicit the first answer from the class (The notebook must/might be     Ming's. It was on her desk) .

Get students to complete the task on their own. As students work, move  around the classroom answering any questions they may have and      offering help as needed.

Check the answers.

IV. Grammar Focus

Ask students to say the questions and answers in pairs. Ask students, what does it mean when you, say something must be true? How sure are you that it is true? 100 percent? 50 percent? 10 percent?

When a student answers 100 percent, write it next to the word must on   the blackboard.

Repeat the process with the words might, could and can't.

Fill in the blanks.

1. 这是谁的排球?

Ⅲ. Try to Find   

情态动词表推测，可能性：must> can/could> may/might

一、must

表示可能性最大的肯定推测，意思是“一定、准是”。只能用于肯定句。如果要表示“一定不”，应该用can't。如果询问可能性时，应该用can。

e.g. He must know the answers.

He can't know the answers. 

Can he know the answer?  

二、can/could

can表示推测“可能性”时，一般用于否定句或疑问句。can在疑问句中意思是“会，可能”。

e.g. He can’t pick her schoolbag up. 

could 用于表示某事有可能发生或可能是事实。

e.g. Don’t eat it. It could go bad.  

The plane could be put off by the storm. 

could可用于表示客气、礼貌、委婉的请求语气。

Could you please help me with my homework？

3、may/might

may, might表示推测“可能性”时，意思是“可能”，“也许”。might不表示过去时态，语气更委婉，可能性更小。may, might表推测时，可用于否定句，但不用于疑问句。

e.g. He may/ might not be at home, but I'm not sure.

Work on 4a. Choose the best way to complete each sentence using the words in brackets.

1. 让学生们理解句子意思。

 Period 5 Section B 2a---Self check

These days, something unusual is happening in my neighborhood.  Mr. Chu often hears footsteps in the hallway at late night. His wife thinks it might be the neighbors. Lao Zheng, a    retired worker, saw someone trying to get in the window one evening. Later, he found it might be the wind. Xiao Ning, a Junior 2 student, often  finds garbage in front of her house. Her mother  thinks it might be cats. But she doesn't think so. My neighborhood used to be quiet. But now everyone is worried. I don't know what to  do.

1.After students have had a chance to     practice several exchanges. 

2.Ask pairs to come to the front of the classroom and say their conversations.
